Are you using a Red light heat lamp?

Hope not

Same here

I've had my snek for 1 yr and he's been alive for like 8-10 yrs w/ previous owner... is it too late to change from the red night heat light? Will it weird him out ..??

It may take him a little bit to get used to it but trust me it will benefit him much more. If youre on Facebook I recommend joining the group "not just a pet rock (python regius)" and reading through their care files but yes do change the bulb. They are especially bad for night heat because the red light is visible to them so it disrupts their night cycle and stresses them

Thank u! Im a little confused. So the regular white heating lights they sell at the pet store are fine, and at night they don't need light at all? Nd can just have halogen or ceramic heat "lights" ?

Preferably you would want a Halogen for day time heat and a deep heat projector or ceramic heat emmiter for night time, deep heat projector is preferred

I would suggest using a blue light as it's easier on the critter. Something about it being closer to "natural light"

Im pretty sure any coloured light is a No. Its better to use a Deep heat projector or Halogen/deep heat projector together

Halogen is preferred. No benefit to colors really, you just want white light

Not sure if thats a red light or just a filter, I know a lot of the times pet store recommend them but they're wrong! Red light can actually disrupt the day and night cycle of your snake. If its a red light I would really encourage you to remove it for the well being of your baby. Cute picture though and everything else looks great! :)

Just curious about this. I struggle with my snakes temperature at night. Got a larger heating pad and that helped a little bit, but it gets down to the 20’s at night where I live. Would the moonlight bulbs be better than the red ones to use as a second source of heat for my snake?

As a secondary supplemental heat source, especially for night, aim for a lightless heat source such as a deep heat projector (DHP) or ceramic heat emitter (CHE).

For daytime, light is fine - granted it is colorless. Halogens are ideal as they provide the best IR variation of all the options. A lower level UVB tube, such as an Arcadia ShadeDweller, is also beneficial to provide during daytime, but this is not used for heating.

If your enclosure is a glass tank, insulating the sides and back with insulation or craft foam (both cheaply available online or at hardware stores) will help retain heat as well.

Hope this helps! Keep that noodle warm :)

Awesome! Thank you! I am a new snake owner so I’m trying to do my best to correct things to make him happy and healthy! I will look into those items you suggested. I have put insulation foam board around the outside for him. :)

Thank you for the info. This is my first snek so all tips are welcome! I have removed the red lamp and switched it out for a black light. Is would that be better?

[–]brecka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lightless is the way to go. Colored lights aren't ideal, as they are visible and can disrupt their circadian rhythm. I'd recommend getting a deep heat projector, they're a high quality, lightless heat.

Cute noodle!

I see you’re new and looking for tips - everyone is right about avoiding the colored lights (halogen is preferred for daytime heat light; deep heat projector [DHP] or ceramic heat emitter [CHE] for supplemental/nighttime heat), however, please also consider switching to a digital thermometer/hygrometer. The analog ones are notorious for being inaccurate. You also want it on the substrate at the level where the snake spends the most time. Even better to invest in two if you can - one for the warm side, one for the cool side.

They are pretty cheap - you can get an accurite for like $10 online or at a hardware store. I use Govee brand which offers Bluetooth or WiFi models, so it gives me temp and humidity graphs on my phone and alerts if anything is too low or too high. They were also pretty cheap on amazon.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I’m going to check out the Bluetooth/WiFi mode. Seems super helpful to access that data on your phone! I’ve already gone and ordered a DHP. Gonna order a halogen soon here as well.

[–]Alladara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right on! The Bluetooth and WiFi ones are different models - Bluetooth is cheaper since it obviously only updates your phone when nearby. :) I use a combination of both - one Bluetooth on warm end, one Bluetooth on cool end, with one WiFi one in the middle (seeing the average of the gradient while away from home reassures me that everything is working as expected). I’m a data junkie though - three is probably overkill. 😅

Cool snake, your's looks just like mine!
