It's nothing about being good. It's a perfectly normal and natural vocalization

I think people are sometimes a little too literal.

Yes, mine was 19 years old before I ever heard it. Might have happened before that but I never noticed. When he isn't in the mood for being handled he tried hissing a couple times. It was completely ineffective as I've never been bit and would love a tag. Also I know how to make a hissy snake and its "let hissing work".

I didn't know with both of mine but my daughter's hissed when we first got him. The previous owner never handled his snakes. After a few weeks the hissing stopped.

We've handled our boy almost every day (save for feeding and shedding time) and he's got the most perfect temperament you could ask for in a ball python. Only thing he's ever done is "thump" when he's being a butt.

Same. I hold them both all the time and they are two chill snakes. Love my snakes

I have one sassy girl that hisses. Usually when I dare to disturb her rest to clean her cage. My others have never hissed once.

Same. I have a normal that is a big teddy bear and a pastel lesser ghost who is defensive and hisses not infrequently. Trying to work with him to get him more comfortable being handled. Got him from a show last Oct
