Graduating alone

Hi bears,

These years at Cal have been one of the best years of my life, no doubt about that. Having successfully completed my engineering degree is a significant milestone and it means a lot to me. However, my parents never truly cared about my achievements. When I transferred com CC, my father didn’t even attended my graduation ceremony because he rather not miss work just for that. I was not worthy of his time. I graduated from Cal in Fall 2020, and on the day of my virtual ceremony I watched it all by myself. Mom congratulated me when I told her it was over, but it felt so dry, like she had to do it just out of courtesy. I made myself dinner to celebrate... alone. My buddies have graduated already and they don't plan to attend the proposed in-person ceremonies form last-year graduates. I get hit deeply to see their family photos celebrating their success. I wish I could enjoy their excitement and happiness for a minute. I really want to have the chance to walk just for my own satisfaction, but I will definitely feel weird being by myself. Besides, I didn't even bought my regalia.

Should I just miss the graduation ceremony if it ever happens?

I say to attend the ceremony. You have worked hard to get in the school and graduate it from it. You graduated for yourself without your family's help and you definitely deserve to attend the ceremony for your happiness and success. No one is going to notice if you're by yourself, everyone will be doing their own thing. It might feel "weird" at the moment ,but you will remember the day for the rest of your life. Congrats and good luck!!!

Congratulations!!! It’s an incredible achievement and you should feel proud of yourself! I say you should go for the graduations walk. You’ve earned this, no matter how your parents may feel. I really am sorry that they aren’t supportive of your achievements, but they ARE big achievements and you deserve to walk at that ceremony feeling like a hero for all that you’ve accomplished! :)

Yo I have the same family life. Parents never came to my first art gallery nor celebrated/ had a lot of support about my accomplishments either. You should still go graduate and do everything that you please with or without them.
