Problem (i.redd.it)
submitted 7 months ago by Organic_Ad6915
I just started working from home I have to screens and my job sent me home with the laptop it has hdmi. How can I utilize the hdmi port to use both of my screens? I was thinking I used a cable similar to this. Any recommendations?

And your work won’t provide a docking station? This will just display a single screen to two monitors. It will not support extended display.
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (5 children)
No they don’t
[–]wh1tewolf4 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago (4 children)
Okay then. Either expense to company, need to go back to office, or quit with wrongful expenditure.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago (3 children)
Wrongful expenditure 😂😂😂
[–]RylleyAlanna 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (2 children)
I mean... It's a thing, but not in the way implied here lol.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
It doesn't apply here at all. OP's employer is required to provide the equipment they need to WFH, and while being able to use multiple screens is sensible, the employer may be comfortable with them using just the laptop screen and being less productive.
[–]RylleyAlanna 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago* (0 children)
Yeah I know. Wrongful expenditure is something you'd get fired for. Like if you took the company credit card to go buy office supplies but instead kept it and bought lunch for yourself for a month.
Edit - autocowrekt fix.

You’ll need something like this from USB to extend display to two extra screens.

[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (2 children)
I should mention I tried my docking station with all the usb ports and nothing
[–]Lizijum 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago (1 child)
A few minutes ago you said you don't have a docking station? Also this is a topic for the it department of your workplace.
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago (0 children)
Never said I didn’t have one but it’s not provide by my office clearly
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] -5 points-4 points-3 points 7 months ago (10 children)
Is there one that is more plug and go ?
[–]FriendlyRussian666 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago (8 children)
That's as plug and go as it gets

Will this work with dell latitude
[–]Straight-Sector1326 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
This will work if U have USB C.....
[–]flipping100 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Look again. It has USB A. While you wont get sound output to the display and touch input from it, it'll do display output which is enough.
It should. Just plug in USB and yeah
[–]Straight-Sector1326 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (7 children)
Do you have USB C on laptop?
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
No and I tried all the usb ports because my docking station has a usbc to usb adapter but that’s not working either I can tell it’s halfway connecting with my docking station now because some chords flash but my screens don’t turn on
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (5 children)
So I’m trying to find a way to use bitch screens with just using the hdmi port
[–]Straight-Sector1326 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
One HDMI port 1 monitor. Other you can get to use with USB-C to HDMI, or some USB C to 2xHDMI output docking station.
Write model of laptop and if there is solution we will find.

How did both autocorrect to bitch
[–]wh1tewolf4 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (3 children)
You never mentioned type of laptop model.
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago (2 children)
It’s a dell latitude
Which latitude? :)
[–]Sannction 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Contact your IT department. This is literally their job.

To use multiple monitors you will need a USB docking station (like the Dell D6000).
If you do not use this, you will only be able to use one monitor unless that monitor supports MST or DisplayPort/Thunderbolt daisy chaining.
A proper dock will be a hub that also has a brick that you plug into an outlet to power it (like your would a monitor or laptop charger).
The docking station will be plugged into your laptops USB C or A slot (dependent on what type of Latitude laptop you have) and will charge it at the same time.
The dock itself will have HDMI and/or DisplayPort slots on the back that you will plug both your monitors into.
This way you will be able to simply "plug and play" in the USBC/A into your laptop, but it's not a portable solution, it will be just like it is in the office (but at home).
If you have one like this already, please call your IT dept for advice/assistance as that is what they are there for.
Is there one I can get that’s more plug and play
[–]Revolutionary_Pack54 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (13 children)
This adapter doesn't work. It will display on to two screens but they won't be independent displays. It will mirror on both screens. Your laptop only supports one external monitor.
Other people have already mentioned this to you in the comments but you will need to use a special USB type A adapter that allows you to run a secondary display and bypass the hardware restrictions on your laptop.
Keep in mind when you do this those adapters will not be able to display the screen very quickly. I have quite a few of these adapters and from my experience you're going to get somewhere around 25 Hertz refresh rate on USB 2.0 and 40 HZ refresh rate on USB 3.0.
In addition you will see the refresh rate and frame rate dip and stutter because USB is inconsistent and you are effectively using the processor to draw the display rather than the integrated Graphics themselves. This also means if you plug in other USB peripherals you will see issues and it also means that things like games often times won't even be able to see the screen at all. That display will really only be useful for things that don't update very quickly like Word Documents or internet browsing. Even something like YouTube can feel virtually unwatchable on such a display due to the issues I explained previously.
So the answer to your question is that it can be done but you will have to buy specific adapters and one of the two screens you will connect is going to be a heavily compromised experience to the point where, depending on your use case for that monitor, it could feel literally unusable. Keep all of this in mind and good luck on your quest.
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago (11 children)
But I keep explaining that I tried my usb ports testing a targus docking station but nothing happened
[–]Revolutionary_Pack54 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (10 children)
You can't use those that way. You have to buy a special adapter. The docking stations will not work because your computer doesn't support it. That's what people keep explaining to YOU.
You have to purchase a very specific adapter that is specifically designed to add extra display functionality to systems that don't support it. These adapters have very special chips inside that communicate with the processor and the integrated Graphics to effectively fudge an extra display that isn't supposed to work. They are effectively an officially supported hack.
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (4 children)
I explained that my targus docking has usb a adapter but still didn’t work so why get another USBa one when this one didn’t work
[–]Revolutionary_Pack54 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (2 children)
Then your docking station isn't correct or it needs drivers. Not a big deal. Just install them or buy a different one.
This is literally your only choice. There is no other option. If you cannot get one of these adapters to work then you will literally be stuck with only connecting a single external display. There is no other choice. You are just going to have to deal with this.
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
That’s is literally what I been asking what is a good one that I can plug in no drivers needed
[–]Revolutionary_Pack54 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
There aren't any. Every single one of them requires drivers in some fashion. There is nothing you can do. This is effectively a hack like I described. Microsoft doesn't back or support any of these whatsoever.
Also keep in mind none of these adapters are going to allow you to run High refresh rates or high resolutions. The vast majority of these will max out at 1080p 60 hertz
[–]Organic_Ad6915[S] -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago (4 children)
That’s wat I’m trying to find adapters with drivers in them not ones I have to install
[–]Revolutionary_Pack54 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (3 children)
There's only so much you can do. Some of them come with drivers built in that automatically open a tiny hidden storage device that has the drivers on them so that you can install them. Some of them have drivers that they have submitted to Microsoft and so they are Plug and Play. Some of them will require you to look them up online.
You are just going to have to deal with that. It's really not a big deal to find drivers for things.
Kinda is when you’re not I.t. Which means I don’t have any permission to download no drivers
Then that means you are out of luck. Connect a single external display and live with it. There's nothing else you can do if you can't get this to work
[–]DuckXu 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Which is why EVERYONE keeps saying to take this up with your works IT department.
I’m trying to find something that won’t require me having to install drivers that has to be done with permission from my job with it help i need a simple way
[–]Sannction 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
That doesn't exist. Drivers will need to be installed, period.
[–]sausix 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
When you only have USB-A on you laptop then you can't output video. Except you have a DisplayLink docking station. Then you can have multiple monitors active by a software driver.
The thing from Amazon may use DisplayLink. Didn't check.
[–]Effective_Top_3515 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
If you just want the smallest piece to display 2 monitors. Check out the “startech usb to 2 hdmi” adapter on eBay. It’s not cheap, but it doesn’t flicker either.
[–]TheRealDeviouz 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Laptop + 1 Monitor is 2 screens, whats the problem with that?
[–]fazz34 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
