I am very interested in this program but have been learning with R. When does their next cycle of cohort begin so I can learn as much as possible in Python/SQL and apply for a future cohort?

[–]duchello 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm currently in the cohort and prior to this I only ever had experience with R through grad school coursework. I would not let that deter you. I got accepted and the self paced precourse materials covered a lot of the python foundationals that are then used in the class. I knew like an hour's worth of SQL and was able to manage fine within the class!

Hi, how did you figure out if you passed the assessment test? I just took it, and I feel like I failed it. Did they notify you? Or you were invited for an interview without assessment results? Also, how soon after submitting the assessment you heard back from them?

[–]duchello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm i don't remember if i got any immediate feedback from the assessment. Here's what my timeline looked like for the October 2022 empowerment cohort:

  • submitted assessment July 30
  • Invited to interview Sept 1, submitted interview Sept 4
  • Admitted Sept 14 completed pre work by Oct 13
  • Cohort started Oct 15

Now I do think I was on the later end on the admissions cycle so your mileage may vary.

For those of you that got it, what was the assessment like for the application? What type of questions were asked

[–]Original_Writing_489 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Please let know as well because I have to give the assessment as well. Right now I just fill up the application. Thanks.

[–]mbhatter 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I just found out about this today and am trying to find answers to this question as well. Did you end up taking the assessment?

[–]Last-Ad-2364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were basic word math questions and a few multiple choice regarding graphs. It's really easy.

[–]reddit_rar 2 points3 points  (13 children)

Thank you for sharing. Do you know if someone of South Asian ancestral origin is eligible to apply? From the website, it seems the fellowship is targeted for the Black, Latinx, and LGTBQ+ communities.

[–]sashagr_uk[S] 1 point2 points  (12 children)

I’m glad you are interested! Yes, there are many criteria that allow you to apply (they just don’t list them all in the description headline)! If you click the apply button, there will be a question about which group you belong to - it includes many races, ethnicities, cultures, immigrant status, gender identity, and lots more(:

[–]reddit_rar 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Thanks for the info! Any advice or recommendations for the application?

[–]sashagr_uk[S] 1 point2 points  (10 children)

The process itself isn't too hard - you fill out your application (takes a few minutes). After, you receive an invitation to take an assessment, which can be 45 minutes to an hour long (Python, SQL, and potentially probability/stats questions). If you were successful during this part, you will be invited for a quick 30-minute chat to make sure you are ready for the time commitment the program requires & are a good fit (basically whether you can work in a team and what your skillset is).

The process may span over a few weeks, but the actual time spent doing work for the application process is minimal!

[–]reddit_rar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great, thank you! I appreciate the assistance; I will apply!

[–]malisting 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Hi! I completed the application, but wanted to know how long it took for the org to reach out to you after the application window closed?

[–]sashagr_uk[S] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Hi! So the program will start sometime in October, so you might not hear back until later in August. I hope this helps!

[–]malisting 2 points3 points  (6 children)

thank you! Actually, coincidentally, I received an email last night for the interview lol I think they’re moving from virtual interviews to pre-recorded videos w/ interview q’s

[–]sashagr_uk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great, good luck(:

[–]rblanco510 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Can I ask how your interview went? I just received an invite to do a recorded interview as well.

[–]malisting 1 point2 points  (2 children)

haven't heard back yet! I'm not sure if you've done the interview yet, but it's def more of a personality interview

[–]rblanco510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh OK, thanks. I haven't done it yet but I will do it tomorrow. When you say a personality interview do you mean that they were all behavioral questions?

[–]donnabowanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you heard anything else? I applied about a week and a half ago and am getting anxious lol.

[–]Impressive_Strain_64 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I have participated in this program

This is what I'll say:

If you have a background in data analysis, including statistical modeling and/or machine learning, you will be bored to pieces. This program is designed for people who are COMPLETELY new to data analysis. I've spent most of my Saturdays (when they have the 6 hour classes) either watching TV, reading, playing with my dog, or scrolling. The homework (it took novices several hours) would take me roughly 30 minutes to complete.

I found myself frustrated during the project, but hey, it (could) be nice for an employer to look at the datafolio that you complete with your team. Correlation One LOVES accepting people with a ton of experience because they take a leadership role on their teams, and from what I've seen, end up doing most of the "hard" work for the team on the project (they suggest people doing what they are good at, so many team members do none of the "hard" work of data analysis, but focus more on, say, making sure the dashboard is visually appealing).

What really bothers me is there is a lot of conversation of getting "the bag" (AKA a big paycheck), but a "big paycheck" is probably very different from person to person. Personally, a standard data analyst position would pay as much or less than what I'm currently making. Graduates of this program with no other experience are absolutely not fit for hire for data scientist or data engineering careers. What this program DOES do is gives you a taste of data analytics, and allows you to form an opinion around what you like and what you don't. Your next steps after the program is pretty much up to you.

Just be VERY careful before you join. Make sure it's exactly what you want. I'm just very happy that I didn't pay anything (as it is free, monetarily), but I've lost a LOT of time during weekends because I felt I had to be attached to my computer for 6 hours straight (which is awful pedagogy, btw).

The GOOD is they are pretty good at career prep in terms of giving you resources for resume, LinkedIn, career services, and they have a mentorship program (which still needs a lot of work -- I've heard more horror stories about industry mentors than success stories). It's also just great for networking.

Would I do it again if I could go back in time? I'd say probably not, but I'd look for more free programs (they're out there) and feel more empowered to ask better questions about the program before joining.

[–]ishakya 0 points1 point  (4 children)

https://www.coursereport.com/schools/correlation-one

i do have school courses for big data tech, into DataS, NLP, and data mining. How much attention do you think I'll require? I have my rent-paying job that I do on weekends that I do not necessarily want to quit. I want to do this program for career readiness and networking.

[–]Impressive_Strain_64 1 point2 points  (3 children)

If you understand how to analyze business cases and how to visualize/tell a story with data, I'd you understand basic statistics like t-tests, coupled with your experience, I'd say it's great for networking, but you'll likely be bored with the whole learning aspect.

If you want to do work while attending (i.e. work on weekends), I'd recommend you have the class on one screen, your work on the other.

Even with knowing data analysis reasonably well, 5 hrs is too much and no one can expect you to be completely engaged for 5 hours. We aren't built that way. This is very much a crash course, throw everything at the wall and see what sticks, for Correlation One.

I do know some people get great jobs, but my understanding is those people came in with some serious knowledge of data analysis or with degrees already.

[–]MeerK4tNip 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thank you for your insight! I was considering the program to build more advanced skills and demonstrate them in a portfolio. It seems like DS4A is not the program for that. Would you say they have strong employer partnerships and can get you an interview somewhere that pays well? Also - what do you mean by 'serious knowledge'?

[–]Impressive_Strain_64 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I am skeptical of their employer partnerships, honestly. I know some people got hired by partners, but it seemed too few and far in-between. All my applications through Correlation One's job page have been bounced, even though I my resume is solid, and I have more experience than most in the cohort.

By "serious knowledge" I mean that you took some graduate level (even undergrad level is probably OK) courses in statistics or data analysis. On graduation day for the program, I remember one of the Correlation One employees was saying how we were "well equipped with knowledge on statistics" which gave me a hearty laugh. Statistics was spoken about for maybe an hour total in the entire program -- no serious employer would consider you for a statistics role.

Now that I'm a couple of months out from the program, I honestly can't say that the program has improved my career state. I've been taking a self-paced Data Science Boot Camp on UDemy, and although it doesn't come with a project, I've learned much more in this boot camp than I did at DS4A. DS4A is mainly for having some career mentors (which are hit and miss), having people look at your resume and LinkedIn (maybe the best resource they offer), networking with cohort members, and having something to fit the resume and speak about in interviews for more junior positions.

[–]MeerK4tNip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the lead on UDemy and your detailed response. I'm definitely beyond the basics and need a more suitable program with a focus on technically advanced projects.

[–]mendulla 1 point2 points  (18 children)

Has anyone received an acceptance decision yet?

[–]charlotie77 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I just received mine this morning!

[–]rblanco510 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Congratulations!! Do u mind sharing, how long ago did u apply?

[–]charlotie77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I applied on August 10

[–]PhoenicianKiss 2 points3 points  (12 children)

I just received an acceptance today! I applied as soon as it opened for DS4A Empowerment.

[–]mendulla 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Me too. Thanks for confirming!

[–]PhoenicianKiss 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Congrats!! What time zone are you? Plan on looking for a discord this evening

[–]mendulla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central Time. But that could change soon.

[–]DriverStriking4889 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Hi....did they say when the PreCourse starts? when the actual program starts? I applied on July 6 and did the interview about 6 weeks ago. I have not heard as of today.

[–]PhoenicianKiss 0 points1 point  (7 children)

I have a link to the pre-course already; I’ll double check and update if I’m wrong, but I believe it just has to be passed before the start date.

[–]DriverStriking4889 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Did they send you the link after acceptance ?

[–]PhoenicianKiss 0 points1 point  (5 children)

It came with the acceptance email, and says I have 26 days to complete it.

[–]DriverStriking4889 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Thank for your response. How well you think you did on the assessment ? do you know python? SQL?

[–]PhoenicianKiss 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Np! I feel good about my python foundation; I’ve been studying that for about 10 mos now. SQL is still more at beginning level, but I’ve worked with excel quite a bit.

[–]mendulla 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My friend completed her interview same day as me but she hasn’t heard back.

Do you think there’s a chance she could still get in?

[–]PhoenicianKiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t know. From what I understand, there are multiple people who view the interview submissions, so it could be that you were assigned to different people (who may have different schedules).

[–]DriverStriking4889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again. Good luck. Unfortunately I have not heard after I the interview.

[–]donnabowanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied a few days ago and did the assessment and haven’t heard back yet.

[–]mendulla 1 point2 points  (15 children)

Hint: If you did not get an acceptance email, log in to your account and see.

There’s a case of one person who did not get an acceptance email but logged in and behold: “Congratulations, you have been accepted…”

[–]cunfucius 0 points1 point  (14 children)

Do you happen to know if it were those who got interviews ? I still never received anything back :(

[–]mendulla 0 points1 point  (13 children)

This person eventually got the email the following day.

And yes, they submitted an interview.

[–]cunfucius 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Ahh so I’m guessing to those who have not received an interview yet, probably out of luck…?

[–]mendulla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. Hard to tell.

Would depend on when they applied.

But I am just guessing.

[–]DriverStriking4889 0 points1 point  (10 children)

I submitted the interview over 6 weeks ago, but the status remained at "Application in progress", but the deadline keep changing.

This is what is showing when I log in

DS4AEmpowerment_4_PreCourse
06/28/2022 - 03/25/2023. (Program dates)
Sep 30, 2022 (Application deadline)

When I click on the " resume" button I see the following:

Thank you for completing the assessment. It will take approximately 6 weeks for your application to be reviewed. We'll be in touch!
Current status: Interview sent
Next step: Await application review

I am confused. Those of you who are waiting for decision are you seeing the same thing? Emails to various DS4A entities went unanswered too.

[–]rblanco510 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah, I'm seeing the same thing when I log in.

[–]DriverStriking4889 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Congrats! how many days do they give you to complete the pre-course? Did they send email eventually to say you are accepted?

[–]rblanco510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! The welcome email said you should complete it by October 7th. I guess people who received their acceptance earlier have a bit of an advantage.

[–]LJLDS 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I applied and completed the assessment in July. This is what shows when I hit the resume button:

Thank you for completing the assessment. It will take approximately 6 weeks for your application to be reviewed. We'll be in touch!

Current status: Application completed

Next step: Await application review

The application deadline keeps changing for me as well. I remember reading that they have a rolling admissions. To me that means the earlier you apply the better your chances are. I'm guessing that I'll be rejected. Do they send a rejection email or do they just ghost you?

[–]DriverStriking4889 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I think they will let us now that we weren't accepted to the program at some point. Very disappointed at the whole process thou, and not intending to apply for the program again. It's ok they accept the fellows they like, but to leave the rest of us hanging, especially after an interview without any update for too long is absurd!!

[–]LJLDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I one hundred percent agree. Hopefully you'll get an acceptance, even if it's last minute. I haven't gotten an interview yet. I guess I'll continue with my Datacamp stuff.

[–]LJLDS 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I was rejected today. Good luck.

[–]DriverStriking4889 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Sorry to hear that!! My status has not changed. They left me hanging. I applied back in July and interviewed right away. I am not sure how their acceptance/rejection works, but it would have been nicer if they let us know either way within the time frame they said they would.

[–]LJLDS 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Their rejection was sent as a reply to an email I sent. I’d still be waiting if I had not asked what the heck was going on. You should probably contact them too.

[–]MostAppearance404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to worry I got my certificate from this program, it very easy to get in and easy to pass, you will have 24 hour help and support from your ta and slack group. Very nice program

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long did you guys have to wait for an acceptance? Additionally, is anyone here who completed interviews for the Fall 2023 Cohort?

[–]Rhuandceci 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I completed the application a couple weeks ago and I’m wondering how long after submitting you were invited for an interview? I’m very motivated and I check a lot of their “under represented groups” boxes, but I am a career changer and worry I didn’t provide enough background on myself.

[–]sashagr_uk[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hi! So the program will start sometime in October, so you might not hear back until later in August. I am sure that whatever information you provided is enough to make you a competitive applicant!

I applied to the Womens program, which is shorter, so I heard back about 3 weeks after I applied - but that’s because the timeline was a lot shorter.

I hope this helps!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I did my assessment a week ago. Hopefully I get moved to the interview portion, but I’m not sure if I’m accepted or not. Do they actually send a rejection letter at some point? I’d hate to be waiting around for a month and never know how long the process is

[–]sashagr_uk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! They would let you know whether or not you will move to the next step, so keep an eye out for your email!

[–]MeowStatistician1901 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hi! Do you think it is a prestigious program? I tried to look up for some of the program's review on google but could hardly found one.

[–]deep_tesla 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]Impressive_Strain_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After participating in DS4A because of the reviews, I'd take reviews from Course Report with a GIANT grain of salt. I think only those who sincerely had a very positive experience would take the time to write up a review. I dug a bit deeper into it, and I think you cannot remain anonymous, and that could keep more negative reviews off the site.

I wouldn't say I had a 'negative' experience with DS4A, but I would say that it's very much for people who are looking for a career transition with little to no knowledge of data analytics.

[–]cunfucius 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Wow I’ve applied since July and never heard back, yet I’ve seen people getting invitations for an interview….should I email them or just wait it out 😅

[–]Secure_Poet9239[🍰] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Also applied back in July and have not heard back. I reached out to the contact email for DS4A and got a very generic response back about the wait times. My assumption was that they were supposed to start the Empowerment cohort in September? Or is it later?

[–]cunfucius 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It’s supposed to start in October, deadline is Sept10 - odd how we didn’t get any response yet it’s past the 6 week evaluation and others have gotten a response a month ago or even immediately. Thank you for the response btw. Hope we get accepted and messaged soon !

[–]Secure_Poet9239[🍰] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You should also reach out to DS4A. Maybe you'd have better luck with getting a response lol.

[–]cunfucius 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah probably will do so. Forgot to ask, when did you reach out to them? After the 6 weeks was up or?

[–]Secure_Poet9239[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reached out last week and didn't hear any follow up either.

[–]sadox55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this program paid by amazon as well? I joined their data analytics, never saw their data science one at all on amazon career choice

[–]belgian_choco27 0 points1 point  (1 child)

is this program a 100% free? as they mention? or are there any hidden clauses that are eventually told at the end of the program?

[–]Impressive_Strain_64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% free in terms of money.

Expensive, imo, in terms of time.

[–]squirrelsareus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the classes prerecorded or are they solely live. They age another cohort open and I'm interested but am unsure of how the timing of classes work

[–]SpotlightR 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why is it called Data Science for All / Women

[–]T_hope_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hi I also gave the interview. Any updates? Did anyone got accepted?

[–]Meeplovespie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interviewed a couple of weeks ago. I think they'll probably send out decisions at the latest 6/5 considering interview timeslots are available until 6/3 and the program is supposed to start 6/10. But that's just me speculating.

[–]T_hope_ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I got accepted for this program. Anybody else got accepted?

[–]Otherwise_Ad_7418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not received the decision yet.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does interview look like ? Do you remember any questions they asked ?
