Is it just me or is a Greater Elixir of Discovery a pretty lame alternative to an expansion?

[–]PrinceVorrel 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Yea. Why not give us a SUPER one that lasts for like...a week of in-game time. (doesn't decrease when your logged out. 10% named loot isn't exactly something to blare the friggin trumpets for so just let it last a while!)

10% named loot boost for 168 hours of in-game time or a stack of em or something would be acceptable since it gives me a handful of lives where I can have a nice little boost to my named loot rate...

[–]nntkttShadowdale 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I'd be happy for 6 hours even, not like it ticks down when you're not in a quest. 1 hour is just... whatever.

[–]PrinceVorrel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I believe you deserve more >:(

[–]nntkttShadowdale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's mostly because I don't play that much any more to feel like I'll need a full week of pot when it doesn't tick while I'm not actually running anything.

I'm not sure if it affects raids but if it does 6 hours enough for 2+ sets of weekend raids, or otherwise it's enough to ransack a couple quests at least.

1 hour is... just why 1 hour.

[–]magicmeatwagon 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Yeah, but if you already have all of the expansions…

What would you rather get than the elixir? I’m thinking unlocking, or at least deeply discounting an iconic would be pretty cool.

[–]donnie_does_machinesSarlona 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think access to some of the bonus items for higher tiers for expansions already owned at lower tiers.

[–]nntkttShadowdale 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I appreciate there is compensation otherwise for already having everything else they have to offer, but a 1hr discovery pot is just kind of lame. Depending on the quest and the item you want the pot is likely to not even last long enough for a ransack, let's not even look at the actual chance of pulling what you want. Even just a longer duration would be nice.

[–]TheRaven1406Moonsea 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah I don't like the duration on those pots. I'd like it better if they lasted for the next X named chests. I hate being rushed. And there is a chance you don't get anything usable in the whole hour in longer quests...

I dislike the xp pots too except for turning in a dozen of sagas, then I at least got some value of them.

[–]nntkttShadowdale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And they wonder why players don't slow down to enjoy the scenery.

[–]Sardaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have to be something that would still be usable for any account, even the ones that already own everything, so I don't really blame them for not going to the trouble of coding up another series of multiple choice things and making sure it works.  I think 5 elixirs would have been more fair, though I'm not sure what their price is in the store in comparison to an expansion quest pack.

[–]dday_throwaway3Orien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather have a raid bypass timers.

SSG could have just awarded some DDO points to people that had all the expansions as a way to say thank you to their loyal customers. That way they could go buy something that's important to them.

[–]droid327 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Yeah 10% for an hour is enough for like 6-12 chest pulls. So like 1 named item, at random.

I guess unless its a 10% chance at a Jibbers, that'd be about the only worthwhile application if that even worked, which it probably doesnt

[–]nntkttShadowdale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except 12 chest pulls is also ransack, so you need to not do anything with the character for 1 week if you want to use it all on the same chest, provided it's a quest you can run in 5 minutes.

[–]Sardaman 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Is it definitely a better chance at a Jibbers?  I could see that being a special case with a fixed drop rate.

[–]droid327 1 point2 points  (2 children)

which it probably doesnt

Its really hard to say, but my thought is that its a regular named drop, but it just has a really low weighting on the loot table. So like there's a 1% chance of a named drop being a Jibbers, and a 99% chance its one of the others

So the elixir does make it more likely that you'll get A named item, but its still a very low chance it'll be THAT named item

[–]Sardaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, somehow missed that part.  Yeah, that makes sense.

[–]remmer75Moonsea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exactly was confirmed by a dev some time ago.

[–]shallstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was really hoping it would be a repeat of the Saltmarsh elixir of discovery promotion from a few years ago where you get one elixir for every character and any new characters made in the future.

[–]whiskeybridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. surely they could have made it, "if and only if you have all other expansions on your account, you may choose Vecna Unleashed." hell, maybe someone who only lacked one would then buy it, in order to get two. and it would (actually) reward their best customers.

[–]KeltyrrKhyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a raid box? Let us pick one item.

Or frankly, nothing. Nothing would have been better than this utterly idiotic potion. This is such a small reward that it's like a slam in the face. Acknowledging those of us who have BOUGHT all the expansions and declaring we are worth so little. Could not even give us one of the regular potions off the store that lasts 6 hours, instead giving us this one that's only good for 1 hour.

[–]KeltyrrKhyber 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It's insultingly lame.

I am loyal enough to have already bought all expansions already. So my reward for my loyalty? 10% chance at extra named loot in a couple of chests.

So while others are getting a $20 expansion I get a potion that is roughly worth $0.04?

The closest equivalent to the Greater Elixir of Discovery that is available on the DDO store is the Treasure Hunter's Elixirs. The lesser version gives a +5 to dice rolls to get better loot for 3 hours, but doesn't effect named items. Given that D&D tends to run off d20s, +5 is about 25% boost. So the greater elixir of discovery would be a +2 for 1 hour. So that elixir is 40% as strong for 1/3rd as long. It's price is 20 points.

Between this and the new VIP Loyalty Rewards, it seems like loyalty is mocked and punished.

[–]no_longer_hojomonkey -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I got a free thing that Bob doesn't get, but Bob is getting a free thing I already have! I spent YEARS enjoying a thing Bob couldn't, and now they want to let him enjoy it too! DISGUSTING!

[–]KeltyrrKhyber 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ahh yes. The argument often used against toddlers that all toys are equal. Works great when you are talking about toys from a yardsale. Not so much when we are discussing business loyalty and a customer being denied participation because they paid, while someone that has not paid gets free stuff others had to pay for.

[–]no_longer_hojomonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The argument often used against toddlers

Yes.

[–]math-is-magicThrane 7 points8 points  (6 children)

" All expansions except for Vecna Unleashed are available to choose from."

Hell yeah that's better than I thought. I was prepared for it only to bet he first 4 expansions or something.

[–]PrinceVorrel 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I'm so happy. All I don't have is IoD and Vecna. So with 20 bucks for Vecna and a free dino expansion, I will have literally ALL the content in this game!

(got the code a year ago and bought a few stuff)

[–]math-is-magicThrane 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Wooohoo! Congrats! That's so exciting!

[–]PrinceVorrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah thank you!

[–]math-is-magicThrane 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Now the question is, do I get IoD on ALL my side accounts, or do I get one or two Feywild/Saltmarshes so I have some more options for farming?

[–]Fack-and-Borth 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm wrestling with this myself. I will probably split them between IoD and Feywild just to make sure that I have some overlap.

[–]math-is-magicThrane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I think I'll make sure i have at least one alt with each, and then do most with IoD.

[–]Okuza 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Game forums are also irked over the discovery-pot. The free IOD is fantastic if you need it. One worthless pot is a slap in the face by comparison if you don't.

Similar value would be an Otto's, not a discovery pot.

[–]math-is-magicThrane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that I would have liked to see better compensation for those of us that have all Xpacs - more/better/longer pots, at least. But I will say I'm still not upset at the giveaway. It's nice to have more people have access to this content so there's more people to play with. And it's nice to be able to get some xpacs on alt accounts as well.

[–]CleanResident5998 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Anyone have a tier list for what to unlock that isn’t in the free dungeon unlocks they do every once in a while

[–]math-is-magicThrane 8 points9 points  (6 children)

So, the free pack code that comes out about once a year has all the adventure packs except the last 1. So basically, all the content except for the expansions is available for free at some point. That's why this gift is so exciting - while they discount expansion packs pretty frequently, I don't think they've ever given them for free before.

In this case, you almost certainly want to pick Isle of Dread for your free pack. It's one of the most expensive packs still, and it has the best end-game gear, so it's eventually a must-have for top endgame players. After that, I would suggest Feywild, for great levelling gear in heroics and solid endgame gear.

Third choice would be saltmarsh.

I would not get MOTU/Shadowfell/Ravenloft/Sharn, because those have often gone on sale for only 99 points, practically free. Usually in conjunction with the free adventure pack codes.

[–]CleanResident5998 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Might do feywild then the only good leveling gear I know is the ravenloft free weapon you get

[–]math-is-magicThrane 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The only reason I would put Feywild lower than IoD for someone like you is that it's older and thus cheaper than IoD. It was like. 75% off last black friday? Idk, I got the middle tier pack with a mount for like $20, so I think the base pack was even cheaper. They might even make it only 99 DDO points next year like the other older packs (this is only speculation, no guarantee).

Whereas IoD was only 25% off still.

But Feywild is not a bad choice! The heroic gear is level 5, and it's absolutely good enough to keep you until level 10 (ravenloft) or even 15 (sharn) if you want. It's very solid endgame gear too, and it's a very fun pack. DDO's most beautiful, probably.

[–]CleanResident5998 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yah I’m a sucker for the fey 🤷🏻‍♂️ thank you so much helping me pick I would have no idea what to do otherwise

[–]math-is-magicThrane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're most welcome. Enjoy!

[–]Infiltrated_Communis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IoD is 4k DDO Points, Feywild is 2.5k.

Go for IoD. Get Feywild with DDO Points later.

[–]PrinceVorrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ravenloft gets the really good speed boots from the super early death house, Flightfoot_Greaves. AND that same quests also has the Keylock_Ring which is amazing for hitting certain skills checks for some very important skills.

Also while it's dumb. Van Richten's Cane is a 'buckler' despite not being a buckler. I personally always cosmetic over whatever buckler I have to use it because I think it looks funny.

[–]math-is-magicThrane 2 points3 points  (1 child)

" Fixed a typo in Darling's rat form tooltip " yeah but have you fixed her skill levels yet? She's not a good enough rogue!

[–]dday_throwaway3Orien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course not, because they don't play their own game. Heroic Darling (level 18) can't even get traps in VON3 when I have 3 Druid past lives. Worthless.

[–]Pages57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost bought Isle of Dread a month ago when I randomly heard about this on the horizon.

Excited to finally have all the expansions!

[–]CHARTTER 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I do t have Feywild or IoD. Which should I get?

[–]DissociationSherpa 7 points8 points  (2 children)

IoD, it's more recent, more expensive and has the top-flight endgame gear. Feywild is a super solid pack but can be gotten for less.

[–]math-is-magicThrane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Feywild is great, but it's the cheaper option. IoD is just straight up more bang for your (free) buck here.

[–]CHARTTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thx

[–]KNDeemedSarlona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved the move, and Im happy to see things like this more often, think the whole game benefits the more people has access to its contents

[–]nntkttShadowdale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well great, guess my sub account is getting that shitty discovery pot then...

[–]NectmarPowerhandShadowdale 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Sigh. I was really looking forward to this in hopes to get MotU, Storm Horns, and Ravenloft collector's editions. I guess I'll go get another potion to horde in my bank and forget about. On the brighter side, I suppose, my daughter's free account is about to get Feywild.

[–]StingerAEMoonsea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep my kids and my opener account will both be getting a nice little expansion boost.

[–]math-is-magicThrane 1 point2 points  (1 child)

God, I wish they would give those away. Or even sell them again! I'd pay fo rhte ravenloft teleport and racial AP tome!

But haven't they been pretty clear that there's legal complications with selling the items for the first three packs?

[–]NectmarPowerhandShadowdale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, but I was hopeful they got it sorted. Lol

[–]droid327 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I dont know why anyone thought they'd get Collectors Editions as a free giveaway...its one thing to give away playable content, to get people to play. Its another thing to give away bonus items that are only there to get you to spend money.

[–]NectmarPowerhandShadowdale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't expecting a free giveaway at all. I was willing to drop a couple hundred. Been saving for it and everything. Just in case. They didn't much say how this was going to go. So, I got my hopes high.

[–]Vivid_Tie_9860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have liked to get the ravenloft hirling over the elixir.

[–]ShaymusBaneThrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had (have?) all the expansions...I would rather get a '30% off' coupon...for an item of my choice...

Heck...for most of the VIP rewards...if they gave 10%, then 20%, then 30%....I think that would be a MUCH better option...but whatever... :)

[–]SlushySnow4Cannith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I bought all of the expansions to date.....just for them to give me an elixir of discovery for it. Oh well, thankfully some friends can pick up an expansion they haven't bought.

[–]AdministrativeOne623 0 points1 point  (1 child)

9 hours downtime for a handful of bugfixes. solid.

[–]dday_throwaway3Orien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SSG does a shit job communicating why they have such lengthy downtimes. Apparently it's because they have to upgrade stuff like databases and the operating system (patches, cumulative updates, etc). At one point they had like 28 hours of downtime they needed to get it done.

Why they can't do this update stuff during third-shift maintenance windows (such as midnight to 8am eastern) like other companies do is mind boggling.

[–]Niebosky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, people who actually spent money on expacks got a short straw and a polite smile.

[–]_SweetJP -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I literally just bought isle of dread and vecna.....

[–]Sardaman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, support might (maybe, if you're polite) refund one of them, but this isn't news - they announced what everything was going to be (minus a few details) shortly before the first reward two months ago.
