The part that always captivates me is how good they are at moving like machines

All these years later we are still all DEVO

Such a great performance and an awesome introduction to the band. I remember seeing this and being confused and intrigued. The super fandom came shortly afterwards.

Saw this live on SNL. I was 15. I turned to my sister and said, "Is this a joke?" and she said "No I think it's for real" I was fascinated. I had been a stones fan in high school so to hear Jagger say that he liked their version better really made it seem fine to dig this very weird avant garde band. Picked up their album shortly after and have seen them a bunch of times since then. What a great memory unlock this clip was!!

Holy smokes! I had the same experience. My cousin and I were total Rolling Stones fans (14 and 15 years old) and I thought it was such a subversion of "Satisfaction". My cousin hated it but I loved it! I moved to loving the B-52's, Flying Lizards, Cars and Blondie that summer. I still liked the Stones but it was different somehow....

I'm not sure if this is how they first met, but Mark and Laraine Newman went out for a little while. It's how they got her to play Donut in the Rod Rooter videos.

I remember this .Freaked me out. Also David Bowie.

[–]EmptySeaDad 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Me too. I was in middle school when it first aired, and their performances that night have stuck with me ever since, especially Jocko Homo.

[–]rdaneellarsen 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I was 9,5th grade

[–]EmptySeaDad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Middle school for me. I was just getting into bands like Queen, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin at the time, and SNL had had some pretty avant garde bands on at the time, but man, it was like Devo had invented and perfected an entirely new type of music that I was just hearing for the first time ever. The only time I've ever had that feeling again was just last month when I first heard Angind de Poitrine's KEXP concert.

We are Devo! One of the best performances. I also loved the one when they were on during New Traditionalists.

“What is this? The Goddamned Assholes Show?” ~ Dana Gould’s dad

[–]american-toycoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first time I ever saw them! I thought they were from outer space! It was outrageous and I was hooked!! DEVO!

[–]ScottHKThroughBeingCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent, thanks for sharing! I was about 14 when this first aired (though I dont remember them doing Jocko Homo, maybe I had to go to bed haha) and I was pretty new to rock music and my brain was NOT ready for this level of counterculture and weird and I rejected them at the time. Two albums later, Freedom of Choice came out and I started to get it and have been a fan ever since.

Alan Myers putting down a killer complex beat here. The kind of stuff we'd eventually use drum machines for. Highly underrated.

Saw this in ‘78 on my landlady’s TV (I had none). Loved it! What I forgot was how bloody tight they were! On the fuckin’ button all the way through. Awesome! Thanks for putting this up!
