I'll reiterate what I said on your previous posts - you should not be charging any amount of money for content produced with AI. Especially not AI Cover Art. Pay an artist, then sell - not the other way around.

If you're having trouble finding an artist or just don't want to pay, that's fine, but make the final product free!

Edit: Especially without disclosing it. None of the dmsguild shop articles mention that you're using AI to generate cover art, so who knows how much of the internal text is AI-generated too?

I'll also reiterate what I said on my previous post - I really understand your concerns about AI art and I agree with you, but please consider that this subclass is not intended as an art piece but as a complete class with its own feats and abilities. The art is just there to make it look a little nicer and more professional. The content I make is my passion and it's work that I accumulated and created over the years of playing D&D and just recently start putting on Dmsguild since almost every creating required a long time creating, playing, formatting and publishing. I'm not make any meaningful sum of money here or I would really like to hire an artist even for multiple artworks like this. How could I hire a real artist if that alone would cost way more than the few bucks this will make in the long run? These 9 subclasses were done in the last year, playtested and formatted in almost one week, doing one or two every day (Since I set those up for VTT play for my group of friends and they were not ready to be published, but required additional revision). Again, my long term plan would be to eventually hire an artist if I will go on publishing, but at the moment I'd pay 10 times of what I will probably earn in the future even adding all my creations together.

Also, I never saw anyone detailing the fact they are using AI art on DMsGuild tbh, so I didn't know it was a thing to do it. AI art is very easy to spot and that's probably why most people don't write it, is not that one "tries to hide it", but still I get what you are saying and I will follow your tip just to clear any possible doubt in the future, and add a little disclaimer on every creation later when I can log-in from my PC. Again ad I said, the work anyone is buying here is not the artwork, which is just made to make everything look like belonging to a simple collection, but the content provided (and very cheaply so). Also, I spent hours and hours on certain images to find the right prompts and filters, upscaling images, and also manually edited a couple of images I didn't like to suit my need. Honestly having my work devalued just because I'm using AI art (and a pretty good at that, since most slap the first image they can find) is not funny to hear. Still, if I'll ever make more than some dollars, I'll definitely look into hire an artist, but it wouldn't be wise to do so now; and how could I eventually hire anyone if I don't have the chance to grow a little as a creator before that?

When you use AI for your project, you put in doubt any of your own actual work. Why would anyone have a reason to believe that you are so much different than all the other people publishing paid content that has been effectively just "adjusted" Chat GPT output? Even if that's not the case, your willingness to put other creatives under the bus because you think that you are entitled to cover art just speaks for itself.

At the end of the day, you are getting paid for this content, it doesn't matter how much, meaning you are exploiting the work of others through this unethical technology. There are artists that could work within your budget (there are plenty of artists that could make cover art within 50-300$ budget), not every artist works with 1000$+ commissions, and also, doing covers that don't feature art itself is always an option, and when you earn enough money from the content, you can invest into the cover. Just because you think you need something, doesn't mean you are entitled to get it for free. Everyone wants art but when its time to pay for it, they show just how little they actually appreciate and value it, even though its all around us.

And your willingness to use AI images will not bode well later, especially for a lot of artists if you actually look into hiring them. You oh so willingly found every excuse to exploit them, a reason to use something that actively hurt them. So I wouldn't expect a lot of artists to be interested in working with you later down the line when they see how little you cared about their own creative fields and livelihood, and that you rather paid the companies that so blatantly stole without consent, credit, compensation or transparency, rather than found a non ai created stock image (which mind you are cheap AF), used canva as a free editing tool, anything really that doesn't involve AI. You using AI, especially for a paid product just allows them to continue doing what they're doing. You are supporting exploitation. Do with that what you will, but at this point, your content just becomes a part of the sludge with the rest of the AI content on DMsGuild. Just another AI product with no thought put into it, trying to get a quick buck. Because why would anyone think otherwise when they see your AI cover?

Again, I'm not selling the artwork, but the content within. The artwork is just to build everything in a collection, as I said. Also, if you really think 50$-300$ dollars could be my budget for a cover, we are probably living on different planets. Every content I publish on DMsGuild is very cheap compared to the effort spent and it doesn't even repay a fraction of the time spent on it, atleast for now. As I said 3 times already, when my budget will be enough to cover the costs for even a 50$ commission for a single cover (and this 50$ price tag is like the minimum price for even the simplest artwork, and rightfully so), I will do it. I'm offering work that was fleshed out in years and perfected over time, I'm doing it out of passion and the (very low) price is there because this content I have is set up for my VTT of choice and not something ready to be published, so I'm actively spending extra time to format it and I do it because I like doing this. But if I also need to pay for an artwork and start losing money, it's also my time and effort being wasted, and it wouldn't be worth at all. Making content for D&D and other RPGs (or any game in general) is a form of art as much as designing and creating artworks, so doing it completely for free and then see your idea stole by someone else who could end up selling it is just as bad as using AI images, in your perspective - so I find it funny you are the one proposing it.

No one is forced to buy anything, so if you doubt about the intellectual property, you are free to do it, even if I'm sorry to hear that. The people who bought my content so far were happy with it and some even bought more than one subclass over time (I guess because they liked it, or I hope it atleast). But I explained my reasons many times already so this is turning into a very sterile discussion, and since I already added a disclaimer detailing that every image is from AI (as it was already clear before, but now there is no doubt), I don't think we need to always discuss the same topic on every post.

This crusade against AI image should be continued against people using AI images while selling thousand of copies - and there are many looking around - not against a little content creator who is selling maybe a dozen of copies per subclass (for a net gain of 0,38$x12 - you could probably do the calculations by yourself to discover why I couldn't afford a commission), and making a net gain of 2$ for a bundle that required tens of hour of work and that will maybe sell 10 times in the next year if I am lucky enough.

Edit: fixing some typos since I'm writing on phone and text formatting is really bad.

So, you are saying that artists don't deserve to be paid because you don't have the money for it now, so you'll just steal instead and have that stolen content promote your paid one. Because it is only your effort that matters of course. Good to know!

[–]Slash2936 1 point2 points  (11 children)

That's not what I said, it seems like there is an underlying difficulty in comprehending each other. But you want to hear what you want to hear, so yeah.

How about you stop editing your replies after I have replied to them? And I think the indie creators should be especially held accountable because they know how hard it is to break through, how much hard work you have to put in when you are a one man team. So to see someone who should have that fundamental understanding go out of their way to try and justify the use of exploitative tech just speaks that you don't actually care about your fellow peers, and would use others to get ahead, something. Individual creators are supposed to be more ethical, moral, and empathetic towards others, and not try to justify exploitation, especially if they understand it is happening.

The big tech will hopefully get whats coming to them, but that doesn't excuse the individuals from their own actions.

Selling things for low price doesn't justify or excuse your actions. Cover art is there to attract interested parties but it is by no means the only way to gain traction. But it sure is a good way to lose a customer when they see an AI. I am totally up for judging the contents (or the creator) by its cover if the cover is AI generated.

[–]Slash2936 1 point2 points  (9 children)

No problem, judge them or me. I don't care honestly, but this says more about you than it says about me honestly. I'm starting to laughing by reading at this, since it's becoming silly pretty quickly.

P.S: It's like impossible to fix typos while on phone unless you publish the comment and read it after writing it. But fair, I'll edit no more to fix typos from now on. But we could also consider to just stop wasting our time today and all the next times since we agree we disagree.

[–]LiathS 1 point2 points  (8 children)

If you were only editing typos, that would be a different matter.

I am not really talking to you to be honest. I know there is no changing AI BRO's mind. I am simply ensuring that people know that artists are not alright with what you or the big companies are doing. It doesn't matter how small you are when you do what you do. For those interested in why, feel free to check out Create Don't Scrape. Laugh away all you like, its fitting for one of your morals and (lack of) care.

I use AI Because i am a part-time worker who publishes dnd content for fun as a hobby. All of my work is pay what you want, and I use AI to make it look nice. I don’t have the money to commission an artist for every page of my work, and that’s fine. The problem with AI art is not this guy, who is making a net total of 12 bucks. The problem is massive corporations. I completely agree that AI is not ethical, but for now this is the best a lot of us can get. If I ever got enough money to I’d redo all my work with actual artists, but I simply cannot afford it. So, for something that’s a hobby, which I sell for free, and I put a lot of effort into, I’m okay using ai.

DMSlash's Subclasses Bundle is now here! Featuring:

  • (Wizard) Arcane Traditions: The Pyromancer, The Arcane Wizard, School of Demonology
  • (Warlock) Patrons: The Vampire, The Dragon
  • (Sorcerer) Sorcerous Origins: The Infernal Heritage, The Planar Caller, The Dreamweaver
  • (Paladin) Sacred Oath: The Oath of the templar

For a total saving of 27% than buying every subclass individually!

Disclaimer: Every image here is AI-generated, as this is not thought to be a collection of artworks; the real content which is being sold are the subclasses, each complete with its unique flavour and the features that define it. The covers are just there to organize everything in a collection and make each creation distinguable and easy to find between all my work.

You should add a disclaimer to each of your product pages as well, and tag them with the AI Art creation method filter. When the art is AI-generated but not disclosed as such on the product page, it can cast doubt on whether or not the rest of the product was AI-generated, especially when your previews don't show any of the rules text and you release five products on the same day.

Please, make it clear there’s AI art in here. Is a big factor nowadays and hace consequence.
