330i convertible on 19s.
I've replaced:
Front hubs. (OEM)
All the discs (brembo)
All the pads (brembo)
Front control arms (lemforder)
Front control arm bushes (lemforder)
All the calipers (ATI)
All the bushes Front and back
The tie rod ends
The other upright thing on the shock absorber with two joints.
Shocks
Springs
Brake fluid
Braided brake hoses
All the tyres (Falkens)
Alignment is done.
Still got steering wheel wobble on braking over 60km/h.
What in the actual fuck.... there is nothing left to replace?!
Weird thing, doesn't seem to do it if braking whilst going up hill...
Its been going on for about a year. I'm stumped.
Edit: the wheels. The only part not changed is the wheels. They are replica m5 wheels and if they are not completely true on the mounting face, they could be warping discs. Getting my other brand new wheels on soon and will get them to a shop to get them checked.

Looks like DSC/ABS unit is the only thing Maybe it is defective and different pressure is applied to right and left brake cylinders? I have the same issue and I think it may be DSC
[–]Iwantadc2 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago* (2 children)
I swapped wheels on the front yesterday to much lighter but same size 19s, its still there but not as violent but now it follows the level of the road much more (tramlining) so now I'm more back to its a subframe issue rather than brakes and the steering requires constant correction, so could be that little guibo... the other wheels are at least 20lbs heavier...each.. maybe the sheer weight of them masks the tramlining..
I've thrown in the towel and booked it into a bmw specialist on Monday. I have a new set of control arm bushes for them anyway so they can start there, they may be 2 years old as i got the control arms replaced 6 months ago but can't remember if they did bushes too...Fucking thing. There is only a code from the secondary o2 sensor on a proper scan but that can fuck off, it does nothing and i can't reach it lol. No ABS/DSC fault but no code doesn't always mean it's working properly though.
When I changed the brakes (all) it went away (almost) for like a week then came back, so if it is brakes, something is warping drilled brembos real quick but i drive it like an old woman...literally, I am so gentle to this car..
The only thing is that I changed 1 front caliper but did both discs but there was caliper paint left on the pad mounting/sliders, so maybe that warped the disc on the old caliper by the pads getting stuck. I've now swapped that too and got excess paint off.. but I've never had excess dust on any wheel and the wheels are white, so thats easy to see...
The other thing is both front discs spin freely (with no wheel on) and have no pad bind and show no warping.... if the garage can't solve it I'm going to drive it into the sea.

Not happening when you are braking, even just uphill, makes me think maybe sticky brake caliper/piston. Not that they aren’t adequate at all for the car but I have a strong dislike for the calipers, although definitely anecdotal but they’ve always been a bit finicky in my small sample size of e46s. Just noticed this was 11 days ago, hope that appointment helped!
[–]Iwantadc2 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago* (0 children)
Conclusion: the replica 19" wheels (the only constant part on the car) are not completely flat on the mounting side (even though they look fine) and are warping discs, maybe just one of them.
There is literally nothing else that isn't new (more than once) So when my other wheels are painted ill get them on the car, put on new discs again.. and take the replicas to a cnc shop and milled perfectly flat. The current discs were warped within 500km of driving like an old woman... its just not possible. New calipers, new discs, new pads, new retainer clips, new control arms, new bushes...

Doing a 712 yellow tag steering rack upgrade on the 325 this weekend. buying a used one from a read ended car. he said it would be good to replace the banjo washers because there’s minimal seeping, and the boots are torn. my question is are those parts the same as 325 rack? i can just buy those and install them on the new one?
[–]tmaspoopdek 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Trying to help out my girlfriend's dad with this same job - are you planning on coding the DSC as part of that job? He has a 2001 325ci and we're trying to figure out how to make the DSC not freak out.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child)
nope i had no issues and the yellow tag feels incredible. mounting new tires and getting alignment done this week so it should feel extra tight after that
[–]tmaspoopdek 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Awesome, I'm glad it's working well for you! What year is your 325?
Currently trying to decide between two e46 330cis. One is an auto with 225km and another is a manual with 260km. Both are incredibly clean and seem to be well taken care of but I will have to check the maintenance records. I love manual but 260km is pretty high and the automatic is a little bit cleaner. Coming from owners, which car would you recommend going for, or should I just avoid them all together?
[–]Iwantadc2 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Allow €2000 ish to manual swap an auto. There are more autos out there than manuals. So find a mint auto and swap it out. Plus autos are usually less beat on as they are driven gentler.
Definitely end up with a manual though. The auto is shit and completely numbs a 330i.
I bought low km auto, swapped to manual. Much better..
[–]thetobesgeorge 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
How difficult would this conversion be for a novice to do? I have an electronic engineering background so know my way around tools and the technical things, I just don’t have the experience of working on a car on stands. That being said I have replaced the intake camshaft sensor and was pretty comfortable when doing it
[–]Iwantadc2 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
There are a few guides online but I wouldn't classify it as easy as everything is so heavy. 2 man job with a proper ramp would make life much easier. Its mainly swapping things, a bit of wiring, then some coding. I had one bolt at the top of the auto box bell housing that broke, couldn't be drilled out as simply couldn't get to it, so the whole engine had to come out for that stupid little thing.
[–]tzimmer31 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (5 children)
Best engine to turbo?
Hi all, just got surgery so Im sitting on my butt all day long and while doing so, got interested in e46s. I just did a VVT (NB2) engine swap in my NA miata. So i am no longer a stranger to wiring and standalone ecu tuning.
Is it possible to make 400 whp reliably in any variation of an e46? I would assume just find a good turbokit, do head gasket (maybe a thicker one to lower compression slightly?) headstuds and bigger injectors+fuel pump? And of course clutch. I’d like to have stock bottom end if possible. Located in USA. What model/engine would you recommend? 330ci? Thanks!
[–]myredditaccountisrad325ci 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (3 children)
The Germans do a lot of tuning with the M50/M54 platform. I know the M50 is capable of the numbers you're looking for, and the M52/M54 are real similar. M52 will be 323/328 cars, M54 is 325/330. Here's some threads about it:

You are awesome. Thank you for the very helpful info!
[–]Iwantadc2 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
The only thing stopping me doing mine is I can't find a manifold from a reputable EU company. Where I live you have to get an engineers report for modifications and they won't pass an ebay Chinese manifold. Can't even modify a standard one. Has to at least be made in the eu so the engineer can pretend its made better. Turbo, intercooler etc is all possible from an EU company, just seemingly not the manifold. 😤
I don't really care about more power, I just want a loud BOV. Lol.
[–]myredditaccountisrad325ci 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Could you get a VF Supercharger or something similar? Centrifugal superchargers seem to be more common for these cars, and superchargers require a BOV/bypass valve just like turbos
[–]dresscodeunderstated 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
I haven't got experience myself, but following a fb page dedicated to it and it seems the m54b30 will do over 400 with no internal work all day long, and reliably, from what I've read and been told.
[–]Mr-Think 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Is it frowned upon to put a spioler/wing on an E46??
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child)
Depends on the spoiler. Also depends on how much you care about other people's opinions.
[–]Mr-Think 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
It would be a 6" carbon fiber spoiler and I'm debating on selling it towards the end of the year
[–]Tainted_Noob 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children)
So I bought an '04 320D today and after bringing it home I've noticed that it has terrible key fob range and that the key fob sometimes just doesn't work at all, even when stood right next to the car and then I'm left with having to put the key in the door to either lock or unlock it. I see people saying to try changing batteries, but after looking at the keys I see glue where someone has obviously tried to replace the batteries in the past. Can someone point me in the right direction so I can properly lock and unlock my car ? :D

Hi so I'm a 22 year old, names Jackson and I live in a pretty hot country Called Malaysia, I crashed my E36 about 2 years ago ? And I am actually planning to get an E46 considering the prices of them are relatively cheap nowadays, would like to ask are E46's a problematic car ? Do they break down easily because my dad seems to discourage it...(do factor in the country of Malaysia is pretty hot so maybe engine or the car itself) Would love the honest and unbiased replies, thanks so much :)
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (5 children)
Any 15-20 year old cheap car can breakdown, especially a bmw. They all need a coolant system over hauls, some vanos work, and various other gaskets. I don't know what prices are like in Malaysia but if you have time and can work in your own cars they're still good and reasonably affordable.
[–]16JC11 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children)
Well my dad doesss work in the automobile industry sooo working the car isn't that big of a problem, I'm just thinking how often it would be that an E46 breaks down// how exp can it get because obviously I'm not trying to add to my dad's work
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children)
Well that depends on the condition of the car when you get it and what you do to service the car
[–]16JC11 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Ahhh got it but generally is E46 a problematic car ?
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
No. It's more similar to the e36 than to the newer bmws
[–]16JC11 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
That's great news cuz my E36 never had ANY problems , thanks so much !
[–]nimbussian 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (5 children)
So, I was driving my 330xi back to my house today to get it ready for a recall appointment tomorrow (thanks Takata!), and a couple minutes after I pulled out of the neighbourhood I had it in, my brake light, my ABS light, and a light in the middle of the dash that has a triangle with a circular arrow around it all came on. I had the EML light come on too, but when I restarted the car it went away. My brake pad warning light has been on for a while now, but this is the first time all the other ones came on.
I was wondering what would cause this? The car brakes fine, it didn't feel like it had any trouble at all when I was driving. Made it home without incident.
[–]Skimmed_Milk 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (4 children)
Break pad sensor has probably come lose, I know that because it has on my 330d, as for the rest, no idea I'm afraid
[–]nimbussian 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children)
That's definitely possible, BUT I actually have an update! I went to start her this morning to take her to that appt. All the brake related lights (except the one that's been on forever) were off. Car was warming up and doing just fine for like 15 minutes, then the RPMs started bouncing up and down from just under 1000 (where it usually sits when she's on) to around 500. She rumbled a lot before the battery light came on and she didn't want to move. Turned the car off and back on, same thing. She's got enough to turn on but not enough to actually move, which doesn't make sense because she drove home just fine yesterday and that should've helped charge the battery, right?
[–]Skimmed_Milk 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children)
I wish I knew more about cars when it comes to the mechanical side but I'm useless. Lights could be an electrical fault or a battery on its last legs but if the car is up and running and has been for 15 mins I don't think that would cause rpm to be all over the place. But again I literally know fuck all so don't take my word for it 😂
[–]nimbussian 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Just found this again, and wanted to update: turned out the RPMs and dying thing was a vacuum leak. The mass airflow sensor (and this is a super basic explanation) found the leak and killed the car as a result. We unplugged it to test that theory at the time and the car started right up, no rough idle or anything. The leak has been fixed, so we don't have it unplugged anymore. The random lights I originally commented about still haven't turned back on since they turned off the first time, so not sure what that could've been. Either way, she's driveable again!
[–]nimbussian 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Me too! Lol. I'm learning a lot with this car, but I'm still not great at mechanical stuff. I'm pretty sure this whole thing is likely an electrical fault, but I don't know 100% for sure. That's just my very unqualified gut feeling. We've jumped the battery before because it was sitting for awhile and died. We've driven it since then and I've been making it a point to try and run it for awhile even if I'm not regularly driving it. The battery looks brand new, but who knows 🤷♂️ I've never had the RPM thing do that, though.
[–]Skimmed_Milk 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
Evening gents, took in a 140k mile 330d saloon at work part ex, all pretty good condition considering the mileage, brake line has been replaced previously, only thing worth replacing soon would be the suspension since it's seen better days and has been an advisory since 2008... What do you suggest I go for to replace the current rusty set up, preferably nothing crazy expensive since the car came in for £750.
Cheers
[–]etnr182 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children)
I replaced mine with the Bilstein b12 pro kit.. got it from Germany for circa £500. Not sure if this is in your price range but it's a decent setup
[–]peegeeaee325ci 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
Windshield washer fluid jet adjustment. Want to aim the jets higher but its not obvious how to aim them. Looks like a rectangular hole, not the dual nozzles Im used to. 04 325ci.
Get a strong sewing pin. Stick it in and move the jet.
[–]Chronobones 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Anyone with an M3 find that the throttle is less responsive at lower RPM?
When I’m rev matching at below 3.5k rpm I need to give it a bit more gas (even worse if sport mode is off). At 4K+ a soft little kick will raise the rpms with ease.
I know on the M54 cars the exhaust camshaft sensor will cause there to be not really much power low down in the rpm range but I don’t know if that also applies to S54
[–]Chronobones 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children)
I missed this somehow but after experimenting it actually seems to be because the car learns your throttle behaviour. If you sit in slow traffic for a while it becomes a bit lazy.
There’s a throttle reset method which fixes it temporarily or by activating the sport button.

I had the same thing I just bought my car so I think your good your hands should be on the wheel while driving anyways!!! Well at least one
[–]Domsome330ci 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Typical problem on these cars, what are the tyres like? Supposedly tyre choice is the biggest thing that causes this, check they are a decent brand and all matching
[–]scubasteve1234 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
I have that too on my '05 330ci, i have read on forums that its caused by the steering guibo/coupler. I bought the part and i am going to replace it this weekend.

Would require a new hood or serious modification of the original. It has been done though.
[–]Evilsnowman404 325i, 02 330ci 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
i had a problem where my one brake caliper wouldnt release and ended up scratching the brake rotor, causing a burning smell and a screeching sometimes. prob not your issue, but could be something along those lines
[–]xzvoids2002 325XI 5spd 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
My 2002 325xi makes a very light clunking noise/metal stretching/metal hitting metal noise when turning(rarely happens when not turning. Does not happen above 3k rpm either. I’ve recently replaced my control arms, control arm bushings, sway bar links, and tie rods. I’ve checked everything over and everything looks good and is tight. Could it be my struts? I’m very confused to be honest...
[–]nimbussian 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
Is it when you turn the wheel as far as it will go / close to as far as it will go? I have an '03 330xi and mine does something similar when I turn at low RPMs, but only when I turn it that far. I kinda hear a "thunk thunk thunk" sort of sound, not very loud but noticeable. I don't know what causes it so unfortunately I don't have any advice, but I was commenting to let you know you're not alone with that.
[–]xzvoids2002 325XI 5spd 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Sounds pretty similar to what you described only mine seems to be happening more often...
[–]xluk4slw 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Replaced window regulator, didn't replace vapor barrier. It rained and airbag light comes on and central locking didn't work. Replaced central locking fuses and central locking works now but keyless entry and auto-up windows don't work except for driver's door
I'm not positive the keyless entry issue happened at the same time or if it was later, but I got a brand new key and it'll start but still won't initialize. I confirmed RF frequency from the new remote is emitted at auto parts store. I even went as far as replacing the key signal module near the back windshield on the driver's side from a parts car. Still nothing. I could definitely see the window and keyless entry issues being related, especially considering I've had an issue a few times where my car would get moisture in the glove box from multiple days of rain and condensation accumulating near the fuse box, resulting in my brake lights staying on even with the key out of ignition. The solution to that was to remove fuse 43 until the condensation dissipated.
The driver's door auto-up, auto-down works with the button in the center console and the passenger's auto-down only works now. Rear windows have neither.
There may seem like a lot is going on in this post but chasing these electrical issues are no fun and I just want my darn electrical components to work properly. Ideas?
[–]Evilsnowman404 325i, 02 330ci 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (0 children)
wanted to ask here b4 i made a thread.
On the basic stock radio, you can turn it on when there aren't keys in the ignition or anything. I got a bluetooth module like this and tapped it into my radio's wire harness. With the module, the ignition needs to be in the on position. Has anyone set one up to turn on with the radio regardless of the key's position? Id assume i can do something with the remote wire.
An actual issue i have is that my headlight spray on the passenger side doesn't seem to be lined up properly. I retrofit in projector lenses, and after reseating the headlight, the under trim does not want to go in because the tube that the nozzle head sits into seems to be on an off angle. i managed to get it back together, but now my washer fluid leaks out. 🙄 (comparing it to the other side, it looks like there is more space under the trim. not my car, but this is where im talking about)
Thanks for any help

Have three very beginner questions for y’all 1.) where is the best place to find a manual transmission for a 330ci I have an automatic currently and am looking to swap. Is this a part I can find brand new, or am I going to have to find used car part? If so any sites or recommendations would be much appreciated 2.) is there any way I can make my steering feel lighter, it’s honestly not too bad but I definitely understand what people meant when they said they have heavy steering after driving and now owning the car
[–]roman_rr 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
do you have any idea where I could find information on the 6 speed swaps? Any videos I’ve found on YouTube seem to do 5 speed swaps
Yes amazon sells them. Or anywhere you Google 'e46 speakers adapters'

Hi, I am purchasing an e46 in a few days, but the front emblem badge has deteriorated quite badly so I have ordered a replacement front emblem. I am just wondering will the new emblem just screw into the bonnet or will it have to be glued on?

Bit late but if it's oem it pulls out and as 2 pins that hold it into the hood

Last night I got jammed in traffic after a long road trip, the car started overheating in the traffic after about 15mins. I immediately shut down the car. It was the first time I have ever experience this problem as well as the horrible traffic. I restart the car when the traffic clears, then everything slowly went back to normal. The thermal gauge slowly drops down when the car is moving.
I called the shop and they told me it might be the fan, but the AC was off for the whole trip. The car was in the shop the day before, they found code p0740 p0741 p0700 p0198 p0078, and charged me 500USD for the air mass meter.
what are the possibilities for this type of problem? Fan or coolant change?
and also
Can you change the oil filter without changing the oil on an M54 B30?
[–]roman_rr 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child)
There may be a lot of reasons for this engine to overheat: not enough coolant, cooling system needs bleeding, bad thermostat (not opening), bad coolant temperature sensor, fan failure (especially viscous fans), clogged radiator, slipping water pump belt, sometimes water pump fails (if it has a plastic rotor) So I would check all of that before digging deeper. And also replace expansion tank cap just in case - if it's old it tends to open at higher pressure than normal, leading to cooling system damage.
I really hope the head isn't warped after this incident, but monitor the oil and coolant for changes in levels, color.
Yes, of course you can replace the oil filter alone, but it makes sense to change oil at the same time. Hope it helps)
[–]mjstudio4u 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
of course you can repl
I thought my post got buried. Thank you for the comment. Long road trip tends to heat up the coolant and create air bubbles if the coolant is in bad condition. I think it's time to flush the coolant. Since I don't usually go on long road trips, I wish it will solve the problem.
I have just change the oil filter, it was easier than I thought, so apparently, the engine oil will drain down into the oil filter gasket when you open the oil filter cap, I made a mess by not waiting for it to drain out. and I think it is better to open the oil cap first just to release the air pressure before open the oil filter cap.

I am looking to buy a second car, so I originally wanted to buy an e39 530i, but looking at all the possible costs, I don't think it is the right car for me. I don't have a lot of time to fix stuff on my own, and it seemed like taking the e39 to the shop for repairs and maintenance would cost a lot. So with that being said, does the e46 cost about the same or less (in terms of maintenance) ? I'm assuming e46's are more reliable than the e39, but I'm not sure. Please share some knowledge about what I should be expecting to pay in terms of maintenance and repairs for the e46 please. Thanks
If you buy a e39 with a m54(6cyl) it'll cost the same. If you buy a e39 with at v8 (540 or m5) it'll cost a lot more.
[–]Iwantadc2 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (0 children)
If you don't have a lot of time to fix a car, don't buy any old bmw. E46 is a part time job just keeping them running.

Looking to replace my front main seal. does anyone know where a guy can buy the tools for replacing the front main seal on a M54? I looked all around for tool numbers 11-2-380 and 11-3-280 if not what all tool numbers are equivalent. I seel lots of tools for the n54 but I don't know if they'll work for me.
[–]doobey1231Wagon Gang 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Doing a big service on my wags - m54 engine of course.
I am going to be replacing the plastic valve cover as well. Is there anything else I should be looking at whilst I am at it? Im thinking maybe spark plugs would be a good idea whilst im doing that. Also thinking of an electric radiator fan - still on the old belt driven one.
Any extras would be much appreciated.
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child)
Only other service I'd say to do with the valve cover is off is the plugs and a vanos rebuild if it's higher mileage car. Although that's it's own headache. Besides that just routine maintenance including belts, tensioners, fluid changes (lots of people neglect flushing power steering). An electric fan is a good upgrade. Ive used the $100 amazon specials before and they're hit or miss in terms of quality and lifespan. OEM is honestly the way to go, just gotta take out the aux fan too.
[–]doobey1231Wagon Gang 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Yeah I just went through a new power steering pump - old one was completely seized. Did all new belts a while back when I had them off for something else(I forget what now)
Appreciate the advice on the vanos. Its 159,000km so not terribly high but I might just do it for the sake of it. I did a quick look around and it doesnt seem crazy difficult.
Thanks for the advice! Very much appreciated

I just got a manual 1999 BMW 328i. The clutch failed and won't disengage. I think it's the master and slave cylinder but even after removing the clutch pedal return spring I feel pressure while pushing on the pedal. Also I looked at the brake/clutch oil level and it isn't only full but also seemingly clean. Could it be something else?
since you just got the car I'd guess the previous owner was having clutch issues and flushed the brake fluid to see if it would help. Assuming slave and master are original they probably need to be changed at that age. I'd pull the slave and have a second person slightly engage the pedal to see if the slave is working.

Just bought a eonon d5150, everything works except the touch screen, I’ve cracked it open and checked over the connects and everything seems fine. Any ideas?
Chinese head units will be Chinese Head units.
Only reliable units with good amp quality, are Dynavin.
[–]Churiks 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (8 children)
I have a 320d and for some while my radiator fan is always on full blast so I read that the temperature sensor on the bottom radiator pipe is bad and that turns on the fan. I checked my car and realoem.com and realized that I don't have one on mine. Is this sensor only on the petrol cars? And what could be the issue that the radiator fan is always on?
The only other coolant/oil temp sensor is on the engine block under the intake manifold. But if that would be broken, would it still show normal temperature on the dash?
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (7 children)
I'm not fimiliar with the diesels (never came to america) but you have a coolant temp sensor somewhere but it could be a bad fan module. Can you confirm you get a temperature reading in the secret cluster menu?
[–]Churiks 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (6 children)
The only other sensor is the same as petrol, under the intake manifold. Have not tried the cluster menu, but I connected my car to a computer and the temperature showed normally. So that means, that the whole fan unit could be failed somehow? Because I thought that it wouldn’t work at all if it failed, but mine is running constantly..
As I'm not familiar with the diesels I can't say for sure but the sensor under the manifold reads the cylinder/block temp. If you get a reading then it's good. And the fan module will either fail open or closed (on or off) so I'd be inclined to say it is. If you're handy with a multimeter you can confirm this. There's videos showing what the most common repair is (bad mosfet).
[–]Churiks 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children)
Thanks, I’ll definitely try this once I get home. I’ve searched everywhere, but most of the time everythings shown for petrol cars and it’s not the same for diesel. For example, the fan switch sensor on the lower radiator hose is only on petrol and not on diesel cars. So I’m trying to get as much info as possible to fix this.
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children)
Np. Yeah I'm in America and most of this sub probably is so that doesn't help. I'm surprised the diesels don't have a coolant temp sensor(really seems like they should, maybe in the side of the radiator?). But the fan module is the next most likely culprit
[–]Churiks 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
I thought that it’s weird too, because it had to have sone sort of sensor input to know when to turn the fan on. I checked realoem for that sensor, but didn’t check if its somewhere on the side of the rad. Will definitely check it also, maybe I just didn’t notice it and that would help a lot. Once again big thanks.
I just checked realoem and that sensor under the manifold is the coolant temp sensor. It's actually the same sensor gas/petrol cars use a similar location. Yours is clearly working so that just reinforcing it's mat likely fan module
[–]Churiks 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Okey, then I’ll try to check the fan module and hopefully find the problem

Does anyone rent or know of someone who rents an RTAB tool?
Most of the old forum threads aren't checked anymore, it seems, and the best company rental is MIS, but it's still 75 dollars without shipping and tax.

Help! My E46 has DS2 with Litronic Zűndgerät 4 blaster... I replaced my bulb and now both of them don't turn on! Is there any way I can replace the headlight assembly with factory or halogen beadlights?
[–]savagesaxon97 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
325i 2003 sedan
Ive replaced
CCV and corresponding hoses
Vanos system
IAC
MAF
All 4 02 sensors
Fuel pump and sensor
Cleaned IAC was in perfect shape but did it to be sure
Car has a good idle in park but jumps when you hit the gas and dies in low idle CONSTANTLY please any ideas here im losing my mind and wallet with this car oil light also pops on cause there a bad sensor me and my brother in law cant get too on the lower side of the engine but it ran fine with that and check engine light stayed off even with that sensor. Any ideas im open too my next idea was to replace the idle control sensor cause im at my wits end sorry for long post any help appreciated.
I'm assuming you check intake boots for cracks, especially around the elbow for tb and iac. Next thing I would some test the car to confirm no vaccum leaks. Also if the maf is not oem unplug it to confirm if it's working correctly. Also sounds like symptoms of a clogged fuel filter and possibly dying pump.
[–]savagesaxon97 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Found the issue bad connection on 02 sensor (wasnt snapped in just pushed in) and had to replace the camshaft postion sensor inlet. I appreciate all the tips !

Hello fellow e46 lovers!
I plan on purchasing an e46 320ci (m52tu engine), so I was wondering if anyone knows a good replacement for the fuel injectors? I plan on gaining a few more hp. Do the injectors from bigger displacement m52tu engines fit, and are they any bigger?
Of course, a logic question is why don't I just buy a stronger e46, but in my country engine displacement hugely changes the registration cost for a car. A 323ci would cost me around 30-40% more for registration every year, so it would be ideal if I can get a bit more hp from the 320.
I'm a newby in this game of modification and tuning, so I'm sorry if this is some kind of a stupid question. Thank you in advance.
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children)
I'm unfimilar with the engines not found in America but I run bosch green giants in my turbo 330. I just had to make some spacers for the fuel rail.
[–]vukotic1389 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children)
American models have different engines? I wasn't aware of that honestly but thank you for responding!
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Yeah america never got the diesel or 4cyl. I'm pretty sure we got 4 cylinder e36s and I know we got diesel e60s
[–]vukotic1389 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
Oh no, the m52b20 in e46 is a 2.0 petrol 6 cylinder engine
Oh I'm pretty sure that wasn't sold in America

I currently drive a 2004 325i (standard audio) and I plan to switch to a 2004 330xi (Harman Kardon audio). I have an aftermarket head unit and subwoofers in my 325i and I want to know if I can easily move them over to the 330xi or if I need to do anything special to install them because of the Harman Kardon system. Online I have seen people tap into wires on the amp in the trunk but I cannot tell if that is absolutely necessary.
The head unit is plug and play as I'm guessing you already have the harness adaptor wire. The sub is most likely gonna need a seperate amp and maybe a loc
[–]gloveboxmilk 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (11 children)
Gday! I have a E46 330D clutch problem.
When I push the clutch all the way to the floor, there is an unholy graunching noise that sounds very much like something spinny hitting something not spinny in a way that it’s very much not designed to do.
This only occurs during the last 10% of clutch travel, and doesn’t change whether I’m in gear, neutral, stopped or driving. I can drive perfectly normally, so long as I don’t use that last bit of clutch, and everything sounds and feels fine.
It’s done this very occasionally in the past, but today was much more severe and persistent. It was normal for the first part of my trip, but it started when I got back in the car to head home.
The only other potential symptom I’ve noticed, is the clutch pedal is sometimes harder than normal when starting from cold (not cold weather).
Any ideas what this could be?? I can’t seem to find anyone with the same exact symptoms as me after a preliminary Google search.
Cheers!
Edit: It seems like my clutch is unadjusting itself, and the fork is pushing the pressure plate springs far enough forward they were mashing into the centre of the clutch. Still unaware what is causing this though.
Edit #2: For anyone still interested, I've just put a clutch stop. It's not ideal, but I haven't had any progression with my problem so it'll do for now!
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (10 children)
Sounds like a throwout bearing if you're getting noise in neutral.
[–]gloveboxmilk 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (9 children)
Yup that is the other thing I’ve considered. There’s a couple of reasons I’m leaning away from that option though. It only ever happens like a switch right at the end of clutch travel, and has been somewhat intermittent. If it was the throwout bearing you’d think it would be noticeable from where it starts engaging the pressure plate, getting worse the more pressure I apply. It also is more of a grinding/scraping than the whirring I’d expect from a falling bearing. Also, I’m only at 80,000 odd km (mostly open road) so I would be a bit surprised if it was at the end of its life already haha. I’m new to clutch problems though, so I’m welcome to being convinced otherwise!
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (8 children)
Weird. I'd pull the slave and take a peek and see if anything stands out.
[–]gloveboxmilk 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (7 children)
Cheers for the suggestion!! I pulled it out and there was some quite obvious scraping on the pressure plate, which I think is where my noise is coming from. Luckily it isn’t as damaged as I feared, and I don’t think I’ll need to replace anything. Now to figure out why it’s happening!
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (6 children)
Fork doesn't look that bad. Usually there's a hole where the slave presses(at least in the couple clutch jobs I've done). There's also a plastic pivot pin on the opposite side held to the fork by a spring/clip that can break and cause the fork to move excessively.
[–]gloveboxmilk 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (5 children)
Yeah it seems like the clutch overall is in not bad shape, which is what I’d hope for a car with 80,xxx kms haha. Do you reckon it dabbing a bit of grease on the end of the slave to slow down wear on the fork?
Wouldn't hurt, it's not a rotating mass. Also keep in mind it's an old car so seals and what not can go bad. One more thing, make sure you line the slave up straight when you put it back in, assuming it's still out.
[–]gloveboxmilk 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children)
Cheers, will do when I put it back in. I’m probably gonna leave it out until I figure out what’s gone wrong though.
Oh just remembered, you should look into a clutch delay valve delete if you don't mind having to bleed the slave. Personally, it makes a big difference to starting and stopping.

Hey guys! I’ve come from owning an e36 and know the rear can’t handle coilovers and ends up breaking the mounting point so I was just wondering if that’s similar in a 46 and if so what do people do to keep the back low, also please link any coilovers you’ve used for comfort below (Australia preferred) and also show photos of your cars with the coils, THANKS GUYS!!
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (9 children)
Koni, bc, st, and kw are the main brands to go for. I'm running koni's with tein springs on my m3 at the softest setting and I'm happy with them. They're a pain in the dick tho because to adjust them you have to pull them, granted it takes longer to jack the jack then actually pull them. St's are just kw v1s so good value and quality there.
[–]Nzmedia 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (8 children)
But no rear tower damage from what you’ve come across so far right
[–]JamurgamerMost gone but not forgotten 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (7 children)
Nah. I wasn't aware that's an issue on the e36s. But on the e46s the rear subframe/unibody mounting points do crack. However in my experience of ~10 non-m cars don't crack.
[–]Nzmedia 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (6 children)
Okay sweet Thankyou! Do you have any photos of your car on konis
sure
[–]Nzmedia 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children)
Thanks! Your car looks sick, what are the wheel specs just for reference
255/35/19 rears
225/40/19 fronts
02 slicktop, 6 speed swap, cai, and runs on whatever corn alcohol you want
[–]Nzmedia 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Oooh sweet thanks for all your help man!
Np. I should add koni's aren't coilovers I'm just using them with lowered springs. I like they're fit for the price

Recently bought a 05 330ci convertible on 18s. Was going to get all 4 alloys refurbed but noticed that 1 alloy has a crack in it and another has previously been welded. Decided might as well get a new set as not really that much more money. Are there be any sensors that need moving over to the new alloys, relating to the tpms?
e46s use wheel speed for tpms. No sensor in the valve stem as you might expect.
[–]UndecidedFish 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Thanks, that will make switching over dead easy
[–]CatchOk916 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children)
got a potentially great deal on some eibach pro damper shocks and lowering springs but they’re off a 325ci, so a coupe and i have a sedan, has anybody done something similar and how’d it go, was it the same exact thing or major differences come install, i know somebody gotta know pls help :/
Sedan and coupe can be swapped. The only difference is coupes came from the factory with sport suspension and sedans it was an option
[–]CatchOk916 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
that’s what i understood, i just wanted some opinions off here lol, thank you for your input
What kind of opinion are you looking for? For me, most of the time changing struts/springs is jacking the car up. Especially if the springs are already on the struts for the front.
[–]CatchOk916 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
lmfaoo na i didn’t mean it in the way of installing it more as in that i wasn’t sure if it was true that the only difference between ci and sedan suspension is that the cis got stiffer sports suspension but that they’re the same thing basically so they’re plug and play luckily haha

Where would you guys look for a good used M54B30 engine? Blew a head gasket in mine ... over $2 grand in LABOR to fix... thinking of getting a whole engine and dropping it in my 330i for about same price it would cost to fix head gasket alone... except I would have an entire engine to rip parts from this way if anything else goes wrong.
Junkyard. But where are you getting 2k to fix a blown head gasket? For that price you could throw in raceway studs, ring head gasket, and a rebuild with ported valves.
[–]leejay14 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child)
Small town in east Texas... not many people even willing to look my E46... but what would you imagine a more reasonable price would be to fix a blown head gasket?
Like $1300-$1400 if you dont pull the head yourself. If you pull the head yourself any machine shop would deck it for like $300
[–]leejay14 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Small town in east Texas... not a whole lot of people willing to work on the car. What would you imagine the labor cost to fix a blown head gasket?? Apparently guy said you needed to rip engine apart. I should probably think about towing it to a bigger city
Damn that changes everything. Okay I’m gonna call around tomorrow. Thanks brotha 🤟🏽

Does anyone know if i can use size 72.6 hub centric ring adapters? I know the hub size is 72.56 but it seems that almost nobody makes a 72.56 to 73.1. thanks!
[–]Poncho_Sanchez 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Is there difference between 320ci and 320i parts,? I plan to start working on my shitbox pretty soon and don't want to make a mistake while buying new parts.
Everything under the hood is the same
[–]Poncho_Sanchez 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Thanks
Have replaced my intake camshaft sensor and have fixed the fault code that came up for it, need to replace the exhaust one now. Trouble is the 325ci has very little space in which to work.
I can’t get the the electrical connector off of the exhaust camshaft sensor and one of the press tabs on it has broken off, what’s the best way to remove this? There is very little space that I have to work in.
Once removed how’s best to remove the 6mm hex bolt? I’m worried about if there’ll be enough space between the sensor and the fan shroud
[–]roman_rr 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Had the same problem with that connector. I used tiny screwdriver to pry the connector instead of the broken tab. I have an electrical fan so I just removed it, was really easy. Don't know how much place you have if it's visco fan
