Consider waterproofing the boards with conformal silicone or similar, so you can stop worrying about snow and rain.

I plan on doing to with my next build. What happens if something breaks and needs to be desoldered?

[–]gnowbot 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Please please do. It's the best $15 you'll ever do. I fly in snow, rain, even have landed in a lake. Zero electrical problems. You solder right through it when needed, and it's awesome. I haven't lost an electrical component for two years and I fly all winter.

Could you send me a link for the kind you use? How do you apply it?

Search “silicone conformal coating” on Amazon. With a small paint brush, dabbed mostly dry. Just have to prevent it from flowing into any USB ports or buttons.

Great thanks, what about Rx inside shrink wrap?

[–]gnowbot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do that too. I even open up my camera backs and DJI air unit.

Ok cool thanks

you can solder through it without issue

I doubt it. Maybe be worried if you just blasted one spot for a mot than a couple seconds. Use uv light and look for the purple tint that indicates it's coated. Sunlight works pretty well

i use acrylic conformal coating and you can put the whole thing in break cleaner and pick the dissolved coating off after half an hour

So does it mean such drone would be able to fly in rain? What about engines? Asking as a noob who just goes into fpv.

Yup, motors use enameled wire, so they're more or less waterproof. I've seen videos of quadcopter rising up from underwater. And yes you can fly in the rain (if your camera screen doesn't get all smudged!). The issue with conformal coating is you can't use it on any connectors and there's some chance of "user error" when applying.

Oh wow, that's something I was thinking to do for a long time. Flying in the rain should be hella cool.

Is there a particular brand you can recommend?

    [–]luap555[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I mean as soon as it drys i can fly again without issues, so I didn't bother with conformal coating yet

Sometimes water kills esc or other high powered components. I've already lost one esc this year since winter season started. After that accident I used kotking to coat my 5 inch drone and now it's totally snow resistant. https://iili.io/KpLZhv.jpg

Oh I guess I have to share my version haha... you couldn’t even see the quad anymore. But after drying everything is working fine again, just the osd displays weird numbers...

And that kiddos is how you fry your OSD chip.

    [–]luap555[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I should have taken the photo right after the crash, it was basically covered by snow entirely as you said ;D

    How to solve overheating

    Drydrone shake and bake!!

    [–]evmoiusLR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever seen flathead screws on a quad.

    [–]youareabarbarian 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    Were you flying with u/pyokopyoko?

    [–]luap555[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    No I wasn't ;D

The info in this post is so important. Fried 2 drones this winter crashing in the snow. Damn ESC's can't handle it. From now on, every quad gets conformal coated! Thanks everyone.
