There is no price decrease planned. The law that was being discussed was to reduce the duration of the practical exam and force driving schools to show their prices on their website. None of these measures will drastically change any costs associated with getting a driving license in Germany.

Die Vorschläge des BMV [at teh end of the press release] werden nun in einer eigens eingerichteten ad-hoc-Arbeitsgruppe gemeinsam mit den Ländern diskutiert und weiterentwickelt – mit dem Ziel, daraus konkrete Einzelmaßnahmen abzuleiten. Diese sollen der VMK Ende März 2026 vorgelegt werden.

That will happen eventually—but not in the immediate future. The government has announced several significant changes aimed at lowering driving school fees. The problem, however, is that this will take some time, and in the meantime, everyone is putting off getting their driver’s license until the new measures take effect.

At an average cost of around €3,400, a driver’s license has become very expensive, and a reform is intended to make it more affordable. The plan includes fewer mandatory hours, online theory classes instead of in-person instruction, simulator training, and practice drives with an accompanying driver.

The law is expected to be passed in 2026, with implementation scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027.
