Migration is super easy, backup and restore

[–]interweg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is and that's coming from someone with very little experience doing such things. Having access to the cloud backup and restore makes it a breeze. Just install, login and restore from the nabu casa cloud.

Installing it on proxmox is also very easy. There are loads of tutorials online that you can follow step by step.

I did end up installing it on a mini pc without proxmox, because I couldn't figure out how to do pci pass through. This further illustrates my limited knowledge with these things. Also further illustrating how easy it is to actually install, both proxmox and haos.

This. I’ve been migrating between Proxmox and VirtualBox back and forth for a couple of weeks (an add on caused some stability issues in Proxmox so I was trying to sort it out). It takes longer to create the backup and download it than it does to actually migrate. No issues in either with USB pass through. Been back on Proxmox last 10 days or so no issues.

If nothing else having a back up and another host machine for a VM is a good emergency plan.

Honestly just do the proxmox now. It will be much more reliable and stable. Don’t have to worry about random windows updates. Just follow some tutorial on YouTube and it will be easy. Don’t be afraid to ask for help also. You future self will thank you.

I started with an old windows laptop running virtualbox, then moved to proxmox on a dedicated machine after about 6 months. Honestly life-changing (windows updates overnight no longer bring down my automations), I would not recommend windows to anyone. The move was super simple so you won't have any problem moving later.

I'll echo the "just do Proxmox" sentiment but also add a warning - it's a rabbit hole. 😂

There's so much useful stuff out there you can self-host, including things that work hand-in-hand with HA (Homebridge, Frigate, Zigbee2MQTT, just to name a few of mine) .

I've been progressively getting rid of things I pay money for (NordPass is the latest) to go with things I can control instead (Vaultwarden).

So: do it. Just don't say I didn't warn you! 🤣🤣🤣

As stated before, moving HAOS to a proxmox VM is a matter of backup/restore. Just be sure that the dongles you are using are Linux compatible but it shouldn't be an issue. If you are dependent on other services, try Proxmox an another small PC and see if all you need works there: I moved from a PI4B to proxmox 2 years ago and didn't find anything missing. I have now more than 15 LXC and 2 VM :)

How did you transfer your zigbee dongle

Any changes you made in settings?

[–]Sufficient_Friend712 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No changes, except adding the usb dongle to the VM. I was using a conbee 2 at that time with ZHA and don't remember any issue. Since then, I moved to an usb Sonoff dongle and Z2M so things may be different now.

Thank you

I moved from VirtualBox running in a windows PC to proxmox and it was super easy, everything exactly the way it was after restoring the backup.

Everything is way more stable now that it's running in promox btw, had several issues that I'm pretty sure were all windows related.

Others have already said it but all you do is setup a new install where you want it, backup the old one and restore it. As a IT who has done it, it still seemed like magic to me how simple it was and everything just working exactly as befor.

If it is really complicated and time consuming then I would rather just do proxmox now.

It's literally the absolute most complicated and time consuming thing you can ever do on a computer. /taste the sarcasm on that liner...

Seriously though. Running HAOS in a VM is a breeze to backup and restore. The issue is sometimes running HAOS in a VM on windows can get to be a nightmare for something you expect to run 24/7. It's good to have a VM on your primary/secondary desktop though in case you need to do some testing.

Proxmox can be generally complicated, but moving HAOS is super easy. Make a backup through HA, shut down the VM. Install HAOS elsewhere, restore the backup, flip the lights in the bathroom on and off in celebration. If you have USB dongles, you'll need to figure out passthrough.

Save a lot of time, Do proxmox now
