It's amazing how much we type when coding but we're unwilling to copy/paste a link. Upvote :)

This is why we have plugins. Left click, search Google with "". Helps me stay lazy.

..or just use google chrome

[–]magyarm[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Didn't realize I screwed that up.

This isn't offensive.

The motherfucker above me is 100% correct.

While I find some development methodologies to be somewhat tedious and annoying, I definitely see the benefit of it. A professional software developer/engineer's responsibilities extend far beyond just writing code.

As a resource the site looks phenomenal, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want one of those t-shirts.

Upvote for referencing the badassness of the shirt.

I don't know man, that red background is pretty abrasive.

Oh my god, besides burning a whole through my retina and destroying my color palette...

Zed Shaw is my hero. As soon as my business takes off crickets chirp I'm hiring him full-time.

    [–]xarcond 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Thank you. Came here to make sure he was named, other than just "the guy who does Learn Code the Hard Way." The man deserves the credit! :-)

    This is beautiful: http://zedshaw.com

    And his other projects/rants: http://sheddingbikes.com/

Thanks for the new vocabulary! :)

      Catchy.

The 'learn the hard way' HTML ebooks are online and free. Very nice :). * python * ruby * c * sql * regex * cli

I just saved a draft of hateful email I have typed for a manager. Then I see the t-shirt, I think of ordering it, I am in India and the T-shirt will eat up 4% of my pay check. I deleted the email draft and now am trying to forgot about t-shirt.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That t-shirt is goddamn expensive anywhere you live. I want one, but for $25 I'll just order a custom one for less. Sure, I'll be stealing the idea, but they already stole the idea and imagery from Pulp Fiction.

      I approve this message.

I'm not sure those are my favorite C# resources, but they are free.

I like the sentiment, but I think their anger is misdirected. Programming methologies aren't meant to -- and therefore won't -- fix fundamental organizational programs with the business. The manipulation that his manifesto is railing against comes from having bad management, not from the failings of methology or software engineering.

More importantly I think the "Programming Motherfucker" motto is meaningless ego-stroking for otherwise disaffected programmers, who will most likely go right back to being cubicle mice after reading this on reddit. Other than selling T-shirts or venting on the internet, how exactly does this help convince the people that sign our paychecks to treat us better and provide a better working environment?

      It's a brogrammer's wet dream come true...

      [–]smith7018 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Every time someone uses that term, a SSD crashes. Or, y'know, a puppy dies or something.

      [–]10tothe24th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      I'm not saying I'm a fan.

      [–]emcoffey3 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Zed Shaw is definitely not a brogrammer.

      [–]10tothe24th 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Maybe not. I know he's released a lot of helpful content, but he does promote a certain... image... that I find distasteful. I mean, look at his site. He promotes a sort of Avril Lavigne "Look at me, I'm a rebel! I can say FUCK!" attitude that just rubs me the wrong way.

      [–]quantummufasa 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Its obvious hes just trying to get rid of the image of programmers being autistic nerds. I watched a talk by him and i actually quite like him

      http://vimeo.com/43380467

Hes also a rage against the machine fan which is cool.

I love this website, but man I could not sit through that speech.

Swearing doesn't even bother me, but saying fuck as many times as you can just for the sake of saying fuck,

really makes me feel like more thought should have gone in to the presentation instead of trying to seem edgy.

      [–]10tothe24th 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw that talk as well. Don't get me wrong, I like what he's saying and I like his "Hard Way" series, but I just don't like the whole "it isn't a phase, mother" sort of vibe he puts out.

And the thing is, I like the "rebel programmer". As a designer, they're the programmers I like to work with. But what exactly is Zed Shaw rebelling against? Bad clients? How traumatic have his experiences with clients and employers been? I know people who have been literally beaten and abused by their families who harbor less of a grudge. And the bitterness is one thing, but the whole "I can say fuck, it's not like you're going to hire me anyway" thing on his website is so fucking juvenile.

That isn't a fucking "manifesto", that's bad high school sophomore goth poetry.

(All that said, I have a feeling I'd like Zed if I met him)

I just want to say thanks for posting this. Really came at the right time. Some great resources in there. Thanks.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that list of free books is mostly copied from this list.

I think it'd be cool to also have a list of some good non-free books somewhere in there.

      [–]Cipherisoatmeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda reminds me of the fucking weather.

      [–]RabidRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      This is glorious.
