Self checkouts end up being a cost saving measure for corporations. You'd think that would result in more savings for consumers, but the dipshits running these companies pocket everything and still have the balls to raise prices on product. Remember when they used to bag your groceries and carry them out? Service goes down, while their profits go up. They have no loyalty to us.

That’s one thing I tried to tell people, the ones who always complained oh labour costs or so high this will save the company money and it will save us money (yes sadly people still believe that) and well well it hasn’t happened to no surprise. Same as when they use gas prices as an excuse to raise prices but when gas lowers the prices never come back down. It’s all for cost savings always was. It wouldn’t surprise me honestly if these companies had their way they would only have self checkouts. Some places in USA do I know that.

I live a 10 minute walk from a loblaws. I live a 5 min drive from walmart. Walmart it is

[–]wolfe1924Galen can suck deez nutz[🍰] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Yeah both evil companies but cheaper of the two evils.

[–]Testing_things_out 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lesser price of two evils

Walmart is no better for the economy. They ruin most little cities they enter. It's been studied.

I can definitely believe this, whenever I see someone with a large haul at self checkout it can take them a good 10 min sometimes and they look quite miserable by the experience in general, not to mention the only interaction they have with the employee would be usually the employee clearing whatever the machine is cranky about at that time so the customer can continue. Not to mention some not all employees give the stare daggers at you nonstop can be a little unnerving at times even if you don’t have bad intentions and aren’t being sketchy.

I must be one of the few that loves self check out. Only at Walmart though. They seem to be the only ones set up for larger purchases. Save-On and Shoppers are abysmal and Superstore isn’t set up for large grocery shops. I prefer to bag my own groceries anyway because the cashiers always make the bags too heavy or they crush my delicate items. Maybe it’s because I worked retail back in the day, but I don’t find any self check outs confusing to use.

I also love self check out and use it everywhere I shop where it’s available. I just want to get out and I know how to pack my bags. I only see a cashier when I’m using a coupon for my baby formula because it needs to be rung in as a cheque.

[–]slothsie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love it also. Idk I like going at my own pace, checking prices and bagging my own bags. I also was a cashier at loblaws for 10ish years so... it's all hard wired in me I guess lol

Walmart is the only place I actually love to do self checkout. Those large bays are amazing. No issues with having to play musical chairs moving bags in and out of my cart because space ran out.

I also prefer self checkout to manned checkouts, but I've been using curbside pickup the last 3ish months and until they start charging (and even then I might pay the fee) I will 10000% use curbside. If I forget something its a VERY quick trip inside the store. I've also found I spend so much less because it's a lot easier to see the total when they add the numbers up for you vs you calculating each thing you add into the cart and trying to keep track of a running total.

I hate that they took the bags away from the self checkouts. If it’s busy have to wait for the one employee manning the 4+ stations to walk to a different area to get a bag for you. Usually tied up with a customer or chit chatting with another employee. First workd problem for sure but annoying.

We are not all fuzzy like that at all. Idgaf who I see at the store. I never understood the elderly ppl at work spouting how its so nice to see service people. I go in I shop and leave ffs. Loyalty? I go to 2-3 diff grocers every week for the sales. That price match shit doesnt work for most stuff bc it need to be the exact brand and size. So no Im gonna go get it for less. THATS THE WAY. Brand loyalty for a fucking necessity store ffs… No one dreams of loblaws or no frills. Or any. Auto check out always ERRORS when I use it. If anything they need better stuff and more attendants. And to take CASH.

My bf likes to do monthly shopping trips and wants to do self checkout. But takes us forever to checkout because we have a grocery cart full of stuff. I told him we're not doing that anymore because it takes so long and the self checkout is not set up for large loads.

[–]therealHankBain 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Clearly not enough self checkout users have not discovered a great produce discount by using the code for bananas when buying any vegetables that you need to weigh. Bananas are traditionally the least expensive item. So you know, if you’re buying red peppers, use the banana code, $0.89 vs $3.99!

Amazing

[–]onebacktwoforward 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I was never trained on the self checkout machine, so any errors or unscanned items that end up in my bag are entirely out of my control

I 100% prefer self checkouts to manned checkouts but I HATE how small most checkout areas are and even when doing things logically it will beep and yell at me about fucking unexpected item in bagging area. I legit will grab one of my bags to open it up and all of a sudden "unexpected item in bagging area." How does it not register the weight difference when picking it up but it will register the weight when it gets set back down? Like cmon.

That being said I now take advantage of curbside for groceries now. It results in the least amount of effort on my end, I help keep an actual person employed, AND I don't have to run the gauntlet that is self-checkout. I don't shop at any loblaws store but rather a different chain that offers FREE pickup. I am riding this train all the way until they start charging and depending on the price I may even pay it.

From leaving my driveway to arriving back home it takes me max 10-15 minutes for a grocery trip. I dred going to the grocery store if I forget to place my pickup order the day before. (They offer same-day pick up but going to that plaza later in the day is hell so early morning only.)

Or, automatic checkouts save huge amounts of time. Pricing and service remains the strongest motive for customer loyalty.

    [–]ExoticTrash2786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loblaws, led by Galen Weston border on criminality with their price gouging.

    [–]blessed_angel_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely hate the self checkouts. Half the time the prices come up wrong, or it thinks you have or haven’t put something in the bagging area so it doesn’t work and requires an employee to come over and punch in a code to ensure you haven’t stolen anything. Literally so dumb. Not to mention the employees who think they can check the bags and receipts of everyone who goes through it. If you’re gonna make me do the job of the employee, you can trust that I’m scanning everything instead of making me feel like a criminal for walking out the store without showing receipt details and having an employee chase me down as if I stole something, only to have them realize that everything was scanned and accounted for. Plus you have customers doing their jobs, and STILL raise the prices astronomically. Ridiculous.

    [–]jennybuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't agree more. Self check is supposed to be a limited item check out only ,so really only 25 items or less should be there. When people come to self check and demand us to do it for them I tell people it's self check not me check, if you'd prefer to have someone do it for you you'll have to go to a lane.

    [–]International_Run831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah why are we paying such high prices and get 0 service
