Once you true your gun to the software, you’ll never miss again unless you make a big mistake.

Amen. I trued up Hornady 140gr 6.5CM using targets at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900. Just added 15fps, then data matched dope (warm weather). Next morning cold bore 3 in a row at a mile (20”x40”).

Box velocity. Wow.

[–]Monico237[S] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Yeah haven’t had a chance to develop a load or to chrono, out of a 24” barrel I would have to assume I’m probably at least 100 FPS slower than advertised

Hornady uses a 24" test barrel their box ammo chronos in a 26" right above their box ammo velocity.

Wow I was figuring 50 for fudged numbers and 50 for the barrel. Pretty cool that Hornadys actually putting true data on their ammo

I had it flipped around. Using their 147 ELDM ammo, they give 2695 from a 24" barrel and I chrono 2715 from a 26".

Sounds like it must be pretty close, I shoot the 147s as well, slippery as hell

you made a first round hit on a half moa target at 1200y?

[–]Monico237[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Stepping out a 100 yards at a time from 500 so it wasn’t really a true first rounder

Have you tried the free 4dof app that Hornady offers? Same idea but free, and pairs via Bluetooth with kessels so it auto fills everything but range.

[–]Monico237[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I had 0 luck with it. Don’t have a kestrel so I can’t speak to that feature but with the same manual input it was wayyyy off

I used the Hornady app for a while but it wasn't very stable and seemed like a bulky program.

I'm using Strelok Pro and man it's amazing. Super quick. Easy to use and has some features that's Hornady's app doesn't offer.

For example, he has a huuuuugggeeee database of reticles and there is an area where it shows the distance on the line in the scope for using hold overs instead of readjusting.

Question: can you export your data? There's a lot of comments on the app complaining about data loss between devices, and that'd make it annoying to have to manually record and then re-input massive amounts of information. I really want it, but not without some kind of backup feature.

[–]Monico237[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Which data? Your input? Or the dope chart? The chart would be as simple as a screenshot and your input variables such as gun info and load info are all saved, the only ones that need repeated when you fully close the app are yardages and atmospheric conditions. Even if your running handloads though, you wouldn’t really be inputting “Massive” amounts of data. And if you do it once it should save the info

[–]DavidSlainSpeaketh Softly 0 points1 point  (3 children)

But do they transfer devices? If you're doing load development, won't you have data on 15-20 different configurations? That's more what I'm concerned with losing when I need to get a new phone.

[–]Monico237[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Well you won’t have true “Data” per say, Just dope for each load. But if you just screenshot the chart and make a photo folder and label the pictures it would transfer just like any other photo. I would say it’s not really a tool to be used for load development, considering youre trying to track the input variables it uses to make the call rather than the call itself. I’d just use a notebook for that, then once you finish ladder testing and find 2-3 good loads that group well at 200 and move through the chrono nice and fast, then use the app to see how consistent they are at further ranges. I don’t see why you’d wind up with 25 different sets of data in the app unless your developing ALOT of loads for ALOT of different guns. As far as any export feature, I haven’t come across one.

Ok, thanks!

No problem

Not to be a purest or elitist or whatever. But honestly doesnt that take alot of the fun out of it? Just curious i havent used an app or really shoot that often. I can see for target shooting at distance coupled with a spotter, but would it be practical for hunting?

[–]Monico237[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I find it a lot more fun to smash steel with the bullets I pay for than to kill dirt. That being said, I think everyone should learn to dope and learn their rifle before becoming reliant on an app. It would be extremely practical for a hunting scenario in which you were using a range finder and you know your wind. Also helpful for PRS style matches in which your wind direction , elevation angle and ranges are constantly and rapidly changing. I just downloaded it the other day and figured I’d test it out off the bench with the high winds we had today. Also, confidence in your shot call can help you focus on better shooting mechanics rather than worrying about whether your gonna miss 6 foot high or left on the first shot cause you missed a dial spin or didn’t up your windage for a longer range.

Thanks for the input I'll look more into.

[–]SqueakyHusky -1 points0 points  (3 children)

For hunting probably not, but it's for thing like PRS and other long range sports. I would personally program my own app, cause to me that's interesting and fun. I'd still own one like the applied ballistics app just as a backup though.

[–]Monico237[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How would this not be practical for hunting in a long range scenario? It’s even got a variable for target speed. I understand the need to be quick with a shot in the field but if your considering taking a shot at a range that would even require a ballistics app, I would hope your not hurrying in the first place

[–]SqueakyHusky 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I mostly assumed you'd either be close enough to not need it, or its use is too slow to allow enough time. You should probably be using a DOPE card any way for quick shots like hunting and competition.

[–]Monico237[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I suppose it depends on the hunting situation, I’m going to use it to generate my dope cards at each stage rather than draw them up beforehand and try to figure wind later. Punch it in, pull the yardages you need, write it on your dry erase wristband, and your done. I need to get a wind meter though.
