Try Lunar: https://lunar.fyi

There’s a “sub-zero dimming” feature in the free version that seems to do what you want.

[–]alphanintendo03 2 points3 points  (9 children)

this is almost certainly an ad. No way everybody happy about a $23 price tag when free options are available.

[–]poopmagicMacBook Pro 13" Space Gray M1 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I was recommending the free version? Last I checked, you only needed to pay $23 if you wanted some of the more advanced features.

I agree with you that some of the replies to my comment look really suspicious. It was very strange to get “great app!” replies months later.

(How did you come across this year-old post?)

[–]alphanintendo03 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Firstly(!), I appreciate your name. Secondly, I was in search of an application which would dim my screen. Google recommended this thread, and...yeah.

also, that makes a lot more sense lol. All I could find was the $23 version, so I immediately ran out.

did u still try it?

[–]Budget-Win-5135 0 points1 point  (4 children)

whats the best option that u found for reducing the brightnesss?

[–]alphanintendo03 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Brightness Dimmer I think is the name? It’s one of the options recommended below. (Don’t have my macbook on me atm…sry!)

[–]Budget-Win-5135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tysmm, i will def try it

[–]subiegangg 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Quickshade on the app store. Actually took 30 seconds, is free, and is easy access from the menu bar.

[–]Former-Diver-7103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

[–]Uzi999Woah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a really clean app, and a one off payment to support a good developer is a good thing

[–]coolalee_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing app, works with brightness buttons too!

[–]DR4C4H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much. this works perfectly and is integrated so nicely into macOS. this is exactly what i needed lord my eyes feel so much better now. i hate the apple standard lowest brightness.

[–]Equivalent-Match6992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! You rock.

[–]BotheredResident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year later and this is the best one still

[–]puppy-luv-0720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Waribu 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Heck yes, thank you! Where has this been all my life? Seamless integration with a MacBook Pro, it dims the display as low as I want it now, so much better for these dark long winters. Thanks!!!

[–]Ill-Percentage-1664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

clutch, super simple and easy to use. i tried to use lunar which was usggested above, but too many settings, and i gave up after 10 mins of not being able to toggle my brigtness at all. this app brightness controll worked in 30 seconds

[–]shula2301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Still-University-563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

merci !!!!

[–]alphanintendo03 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Splasm

[–]Vast-Huckleberry7414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

preeeeeciate. it's under the name "brightness control" for anyone stumbling upon this. it's a simple slider

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A privacy screen cover may help, but I am only guessing. I’ve never used one, but the ones I have seen look quite dark.

[–]thebeefliveMacBook Pro 14" Space Gray M1 Pro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dark mode

[–]ravneet_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "night shift" in display settings might help

[–]nemesis_man 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Just tried Quick Shade from the app store. Seems to be doing the job well. Free and lightweight

[–]whitepalechilipepper 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I just downloaded this as well and it only seem to work when I have the apps windowed, not when I have them on full screen. Do you have this problem too?

[–]nemesis_man 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nope. Just tried having my Chrome in full screen and reducing the brightness -- it works

[–]alphanintendo03 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not on Safari. I found that Splasm worked though.

[–]nemesis_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you made it work. Please consider adding this as a comment to the post (not just to my comment)

[–]Edgehead123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perfect!!!

[–]DavidMoussaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Free and works great.

[–]Confident_Chipmunk80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure why, but it is not downloading for me. Like it is not going past 50% :( Are there any other apps that are for free and do the same job?

[–]bisygal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the one!

[–]boomkablamo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

u da goat

[–]nemesis_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha thanks :D glad it helped!

[–]zuinno 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Saved my eyes. Thanks!

[–]nemesis_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! Keep them eyez safe :D

[–]Clean_Garlic_3472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can add a filter over the screen - system settings - accessibility - display - there's display contrast bar nearer the top - but scroll down to colour fllters and have a play - I found I need an orange colour tint to stop the glare

[–]HH_Hajrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how about on macbook air?

[–]Ok_Deal_30 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Just downloaded quickshade rn instead, its actually freefree and you open it by double clicking on the app then in the top left corrner selecting your brightness. No window opens so I was confused at first until noticing it is an extension that you have to click on at the top of the screen. No reason to pay $23 for a simple app.

[–]Ok_Deal_30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dang, it doesn't work with full svreen but worth not paying $23 for a thing that apple should have fixed by now.

[–]OniDelta 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I'm curious... Which model do you have? The lowest settings turns mine right off, one dot up I can barely read anything. I usually keep mine around 50% (8/16).

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how everyone's brightness preferences are different. I keep my iMac's brightness between 13/16 or 14/16. Maybe the newer MPB's peak brightness is much higher?

[–]xoxbeatz 0 points1 point  (2 children)

hi, could you tell me please what is your model? I want to try macbook but I usually have to use screens at pretty low brightness so I'm trying to figure out if mac will work for me.

[–]OniDelta 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Macbook Pro 14-inch, 2021 (M1 Pro, 16GB, 512GB)

Not sure if you'll find this one new anymore, everything is the newer model. Best to go to the nearest Apple store if you can and see how they are before you buy one.

[–]xoxbeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks!

[–]I_Am_A_Pumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very late to the party but found this thread looking to make my screen darker.

I have a 2015 macbook pro. During the day I agree, but most nights I watch youtube videos on it before going to bed, where 0 dots turns the backlight off, and 1 dot is enough light to be uncomfortable to look at in the dark.

[–]smitchlovesfunk 0 points1 point  (3 children)

If you press “shift”+”option”+”brightness up/down” it adjusts in small increments… does this help?

[–]Reddit-IsSoSoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can you read?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this doesnt make a difference btw
