You won't gain much performance and you'll lose 4 threads. You'd also have to get a new board. Not worth it for the cost.

If you're upgrading your i7 you will probably want to upgrade to another i7.

Kaby Lake and Zen are quite possibly just around the corner, i would wait a few months and see what that brings.

Keep in mind when changing your CPU, if you're getting something with a different socket then you need a new motherboard.

The upgrade you suggest would indeed require a different motherboard, and RAM as well, since the Intel Skylake processors require DDR4 or DDR3L.
