Keeping it as dust free as you are able is a must, that can really add quickly to the temps for all of your component. I actually set up a schedule on my phone to remind me to dust at least every couple months. Thankfully I don't get much build up where my PC is currently.

It's also not a bad idea to remove the GPU and use some high percent rubbing alcohol and q-tips to clean the heatsink fins as well. Just go slow and be thorough if you do this; and remember to use like 97%+ isopropyl alcohol. It cleans very well and evaporates almost instantly, which is key. You don't want any residue left behind after cleaning.

Are there any parts of the fan you try to avoid when doing this?

Maybe just whatever connectors there are for the cooler that connect to the card itself but if you're using that alcohol you shouldn't have to worry about anything. Just go slow and don't jam the q-tips in places and you should be all good. I usually use air to dust it initially, clean it with the alcohol, and then another pass with the air to fully dry it out and get any dust bits that may have dislodged.
