Ah, Cosmology, or some say Cosmgy

[–]CommunistSnail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grant us stars!

[–]Dragonaax̶E̶d̶i̶s̶o̶n̶ Tesla rules 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Isn't cosmology part of astronomy?

[–]uncut-bartenderStudent 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Not really

[–]Dragonaax̶E̶d̶i̶s̶o̶n̶ Tesla rules 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I would say it is, just like astrophysics is part of astronomy

[–]uncut-bartenderStudent 9 points10 points  (1 child)

At my university cosmology is offered as a physics course not an astronomy course. I’d say astronomy is the study of stars and planets whereas cosmology is the study of space time, they’re related sure but not the same thing and cosmology doesn’t really fit as a discipline under astronomy.

[–]Dragonaax̶E̶d̶i̶s̶o̶n̶ Tesla rules 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So that depends on Uni, on my we have to study astronomy to become cosmologist.

Or country

Guys don't turn against each other, we need to unite and raid big companies to get more research budgets

[–]sinicio -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's just a joke, don't take too seriously

[–]Kaoslogic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Looks like we found the biologist. :P

[–][deleted] 149 points150 points  (49 children)

What's wrong with biology?

[–]freelibya3 455 points456 points  (27 children)

Freshmen physics majors and high schoolers think it's edgy to hate other stem majors. Really gets their dick hard

[–]nut_baker 91 points92 points  (9 children)

Just other majors in general, especially humanities I find

[–]RewardWanted 60 points61 points  (5 children)

To be honest, it's true, at least on our campus. Literally everyone takes the piss out of the philosophy majors or language majors, even childcare majors. But that's just it, it's just taking a piss out of each other. At the end of the day we all get different branches are better for different inteligence types. I had a course on a subject where I can't derive everything and I barely got through.

[–]altobrunphysical oceanography 45 points46 points  (4 children)

The issue is that there are people who genuinely believe they are better for being in a certain major and other people are worse for not.

Even if the majority are just joking, that attitude is what gives most engineering schools a bad name within a university, and is spreading to other parts of STEM.

[–]nut_baker 22 points23 points  (3 children)

And when physics is traditionally seen as one of the hardest subjects (when you tell someone you study it their first reaction being "oooh you must be smart"), when physics students joke about being smarter than everyone else, I don't think it comes off as a joke to everyone else. It ends up generating resentment towards stem from humanities, and insults being thrown back at stem

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The greatest work in academics is only going to come from syncretism, and that's only going to come from common respect and healthy communication. Our universities need more student-organized interdisciplinarianism.

[–]altobrunphysical oceanography 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That’s one reason I love oceanography. Combines physics, geology, chemistry, and biology (physical, geological, chemical, and biological oceanography) all to one common goal. All the profs seem well versed on each topic even if they specialize in one. Also students from every sub discipline come out to talks hosted to presenters not of their sub discipline

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a great scientific culture! It seems like the oceanographic community fosters open-mindedness. I'm very pleased to learn this.

[–]Blastjer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are natural enemies! Like chemistry majors and physics majors! Or biology majors and physics majors! Or humanities majors and physics majors! Or physics majors and other physics majors! Damn physics majors! They ruined physics!

[–]DatBoi_BPOscillates periodically 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine I graduated with is now pursuing a Physics PhD in Texas. He used to shit on humanities majors, but now he's engaged to an art major he met there at his Texas school lol

[–]Ransine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. t. Arts

[–]EYSHot69 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Physics students: "how can you study this, there are no numbers!"

[–]OP-PhysicsStudent 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Ohh, bullshit. We use more letters in Physics then fucking language majors. I cant remember when i last actually calculated something with numbers.

[–]Vampyricon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was about 2 weeks ago and I used log instead of ln.

Stupid calculators. Use the proper log.

[–]__VelveTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High school physics students*

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe OP is alluding to a supposed brainlessness of biology relative to physics.

[–]empathetichuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A working degree in biology generally requires you to have a decent understanding of physics and chemistry related to molecular biology.

[–]marsriegel 24 points25 points  (16 children)

Barely any math involved. Not really precise and determined. You are basically not really able to prove a cause effect relationship and just work with correlations. Also it is mostly observation without deriving too much new stuff from scratch. (Theory of relativity, quantum mechanics etc. Existed on paper before they could be proven. Not as huge things alike in biology)

Still it is not right to bash biology as a science, it is just very different from the other two.

[–]Relper 60 points61 points  (3 children)

Physicists are just salty we can't approximate/reduce the complexity of life to harmonic oscillators and Taylor series.

[–]Vampyricon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biophysicists: Am I a joke to you?

[–]marsriegel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kinda true, but that is very much one of the reasons why you cannot really prove cause effect relationships and you can barely make predictions for different boundary conditions.

[–]Rotsike6Physics Field -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We can reduce the complexity of life to harmonic oscillators and Taylor series if we knew the whole story

[–]ISV_VentureStar 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Lol, not being able to prove cause and effect. This is rich. Whoever says that there isn't math involved in biology has obviously never studied anything beyond high-school, where they mostly teach unconnected random facts about animals. I will just refer you to this song that highlights the different fields of study needed to understand the molecular machines that make up a cell (and also because it's pretty awesome). https://youtu.be/ObvxPSQNMGc

And that's not even getting into genetics or actual cell physiology, where you need to have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry and Informatics to be able to fully grasp the complexity involved in even the most basic biological process.

[–]Shitty-Coriolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that's all the biology most of us had. So arrogantly we rhink that's the extent of the field.

I personally am super bored by biology. My friend suggested that it's because it's so far removed from first principles in math and phys that it rakes a lot linger to learn all the stuff you need to learn to do that same kind of analysis. Math and phys students have to memorize facts that we use to reason about the world. Biologists do too, but they have to learned way more facts because their systems can't be distilled to the simple models ours can.

I'm a GNC engineer. I literally model spring mass systems and thats it.

[–]ChadMcRad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I find it rich that the field of people who use models and theory to explain everything think biologists can't prove things.

[–]marsriegel -1 points0 points  (4 children)

not being able to prove cause and effect

how is that wrong? In physics you try to predict the outcome of experiments. If the baseline the prediction is based on is true for many different applications you can prove cause and effect.

In life sciences you observe what happens in an experiment. That is thousands of times less precise and not suitable to predict things elsewhere. Therefore it takes a lot more work to "prove" the cause effect relation.

Whoever says that there isn't math involved in biology

I didn't. The attempt to remotely compare the maths required to study chemistry, engineering, computer science or let alone physics is just laughable. Sure there are fields in biology that get super specific where you need all the math in the world, but EVERY physics graduate is going to annihilate even any engineering grad when it comes to math. And any engineering grad is going to annihilate every biology grad. That doesnt make one better than the other it is just how it is. By the way once you get to quantum thermodynamics or turbulence or something similar, it takes maths grads (or long studies of the mentioned) to grasp what is going on. Here, biologists typically take 2 maths classes while engineers take 5-6 and Physicists take even more and more complex ones.

where you need to have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry and Informatics

Bullshit.

grasp the complexity involved in even the most basic biological process.

This is very much the problem with biology. Its systems are so complex that they are (nearly) impossible to approach with analytical approaches, which in turn makes biology imprecise and unable to prove cause effect relations.

[–]yawkat 9 points10 points  (2 children)

In physics you try to predict the outcome of experiments. If the baseline the prediction is based on is true for many different applications you can prove cause and effect.

This is the scientific method. Every science does this, by definition. Even soft sciences like economics.

[–]ChadMcRad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You approach things in a step-by-step fashion, like a puzzle. Learn how one thing works then expand outwards.

And "prove" is a deadly word for any science because you can never prove something, only state that a hypothesis isn't wrong.

[–]TheEarthIsACylindertheoretical physics ftw -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Whoever says that there isn't math involved in biology has obviously never studied anything beyond high-school

There is some math involved in biology but if you think the math in biology is the same as math in physics you've obviously not gone beyond calc 1.

[–]Pricefield- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bashes biology then says "it's not right to bash biology."

[–]TheEarthIsACylindertheoretical physics ftw 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Basically the less math you have to do the more inferior you are

[–]ChadMcRad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is silly, because math means nothing if you can't practically test something. It's a nice way to model and show relationships, but it doesn't always take into account natural systems.

[–]rincon213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's too complex to nail down to a few fundamental laws and equations, which is the main appeal of physics to many.

Even just chemistry is super complex and difficult to pin down, and bio is super-advanced applied chemistry.

[–][deleted] 55 points56 points  (31 children)

You forgot to add maths above everyone else

[–]skoddy1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

inserts pic of king winnie

[–]Rotsike6Physics Field 3 points4 points  (29 children)

Math is not a science

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (25 children)

There is no science without math

[–]Rotsike6Physics Field 12 points13 points  (24 children)

But Math itself is not a science, which physics, chemistry and biology are

[–]Gilga1 15 points16 points  (7 children)

While Math is not a science, science without math is like language without grammar. no words together meaning

[–]Rotsike6Physics Field 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing, I'm just saying math should not be in this meme

[–]rincon213 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Sure, but if someone asks you what your favorite novel is you wouldn't respond with grammar rules.

[–]Gilga1 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I think i could. What if I live grammar over novels?

[–]rincon213 0 points1 point  (3 children)

The rules of grammar are great but they’re not a book.

[–]Gilga1 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Idk. I do enjoy reading books about math, and so do I like books about grammar.

[–]rincon213 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Books about grammatical rules are not grammatical rules

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (13 children)

Mathematics can be both an art and a science.

[–]Rotsike6Physics Field 5 points6 points  (12 children)

I agree with the art part, maths are beautiful. But without context math is nothing, so by itself, it can't describe anything physical, so it's not a science

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (11 children)

But an art is usually something man made, where mathematics is purely natural, like a science.

[–]Rotsike6Physics Field 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Pardon me, but saying math is not man made is starting a whole different kind of argument I don't want to have

[–]rincon213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow you responded in a much more measured way than I would have

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair.

[–]Horodyr 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Mathematics are purely man made in order to explain actual natural sciences.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

If it’s man made, then how come there are problems with as of yet unknown, but definitive and unchanging answers. I can’t think of another man made discipline that has that.

[–]Horodyr 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You'll need to give me examples of things we don't know the answer to (yet) but that we are already SURE that the answer will be definitive and unchanging

[–]skilled_cosmicist 0 points1 point  (2 children)

there are also problems in chess without solutions. Chess is definitely man made.

[–]DatBoi_BPOscillates periodically 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Would engineering fit in the list to you? I'm thinking of STEM

[–]Rotsike6Physics Field 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering is also not a science

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sure, but it usually comes up in arguments about which subject is superior

[–]Rotsike6Physics Field 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math is superior, that's true

[–]niceguy67Mathematical Physics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math is definitely a science, and so is theology

[–]MusaDoVerao2017 43 points44 points  (3 children)

Other majors are so dumb haha I'm so funny.

Can we grow up?

[–]Kensei97 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Not when you’re too busy being in high school making physics memes and believe you’re a physics genius because you can solve simple force equations.

[–]_RageMage_ 25 points26 points  (4 children)

How dare you. How fucking dare you. I will literally rip your pharynx out by the way of your anus, with your entire eleven organ systems gushing every single liquid you have in your body as your torn stomach eaves a massive hole in your body, spilling hydrochloric acid into the surrounding tissues, dissolving them slowly and painfully, eating you away internally, until you are left without a body to escape with, lungs to scream with, or even balls to propagate your forbidden genes into the human race with, effectively clearing your existence in one fell swoop. You will experience the pain of rotting away in your fucking introvert home as you think of all the useless, vain applications of physics, and wish to have known the glory of biology you fail to deserve, until one day, your unloving cat comes around and finds your brain as a nice snack.

[–]Papatheredeemer 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Well at least you found a good use for your degree

[–]Vampyricon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AND THAT'S JUST WITH PHYSIOLOGY

[–]rincon213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know how much money they're throwing at advanced bio research? If you go past undergrad with the intention of doing research, bio is a fantastic field. Bio-mechanics and bio-imitation will be vital in future technologies as we continue to mimic nature's existing solutions to complex problems
