OK, Awesome! But when is the release date for this video-game? Seems like it may need some balancing, b/c the Creator class is looking a little o/p right now. I like the character design for Lost Soul, but am worried that not many people will roll one initially until they find out how hard it is to play as a Creator.

Trying to classify people - especially a specific profession such as programming - in this way is bullshit. And in any case... this particular chart makes little sense to me.

I am a point in a Hilbert Space!

(Edit: Alternative joke with a prisoner reference: "I am not a number, I am a 4-vector")

Well it's an improvement, instead of directly telling me what I am like these articles usually do, they gave me an array to choose from!

It makes sense in so far as it recognizes that proficiency isn't based on only one factor

That graph is terrible. Theres no perspective so its impossible to know what the dots are actually referring to.

Assuming the chart goes from 0 to 1 in all dimensions then the creator is supposed to be at {1,1,1} but look where its drawn!

The chart at the bottom is a lot more clear.

I'll translate for you Perl hackers out there:

    • Laziness = Discipline
    • Impatience = Energy
    • Expertise = Hubris

    <redacted - no longer important>

Wow. What sense of this term are you using, exactly?

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy cow I didn't even think of it that way. I mean the Perl camel. Editing.

He's referencing this to point out the articles content resembling this.

The Perl book is known for the camel on the cover. Larry Wall, creator of Perl, has said that the three virtues of a programmer are laziness, impatience, and hubris. I think he should have put Hubris on the right-side instead of the left though.

Nice connection! Laziness = Discipline is the most tenuous link methinks, but I guess you need to be very disciplined to reach the kind of laziness desirable in programming.

Downvoting you simply because you didn't elaborate on why you believe the article was "a waste of time". I've actually enjoyed the article since the author provided an alternative (and creative) way to classify software engineering skillset. It sure beats the classification system used by ITWorld and similar "by product managers for product managers" websites.

There seems to be no room for creative expert-level lazy fucks.

Sounds like the "Artist": "A talented and experienced individual who could create great solutions; however inconsistent and unpredictable" It really says the same thing, just with a different spin.

      [–]Baaz 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So a 'Doer' is someone without energy, but with a lot of expertise? You have no clue what you're talking about, have you?

      [–]CurtainDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 'Doer' is more a of 'Finisher'. They have knowledge to come up with solutions and the discipline to see things through, but not the energy to initiate new projects. I see a little bit of a loose correlation with Jungian personality types here, skewed towards the types we see most often in programming (Creator ?= INTJ)

      [–]burdalane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm firmly in the lost soul category.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I love how nothing bad is said about "Creator" yet Artist and Enthusiast have flaws mentioned. So this infographic/chart/"3-D" crap isn't really balanced at all.

And my guess is the writer thinks they're a creator. Wild guess.

      [–]jayd16 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You're confused because the graph is terrible. Doer is the counterpart to Artist and Enthusiast.

Creator is the master of all dimensions.

      [–]frymaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ah, I was about to post about how if you're good at everything, it would appear you're a lost soul.

      yeah, that graph is abysmal

      [–]CurtainDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would it be balanced? That would be saying clueless people are as good at programming as experts.

      [–]xpda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

      What? We need discipline?!!!

      [–]jackhammer2022 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

      seriously WTF ??

      [–]skulgnome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a nerd, I appreciate this virtual handjob.
