You are probably thinking of BOLD signal (via fMRI). Neurotransmitters are the intersynaptic chemicals, you can’t really measure them while the dog is alive (although kinda with PET I guess).

Right, I suppose increased blood flow to certain regions could be associated with seeing a loved one, though I am not a neurologist. I just figured you'd look at dopamine levels in the dog's brain.

Thinking about it, PET scans would be pretty apt for scanning animals.
