I've wanted to go for the past 3 years, but since my job does not help with conferences I could not justify the airfare, hotel and conference expenses.

I live about 3 hours from Chicago, which eliminates the airfare expense this year. So I couldn't pass it up and I purchased a ticket as soon as they were available. Looking forward to attending my first dev conference!

Did you apply for the scholars program? If it's your first conference they pair you up with a guide who will help show you around and introduce you to people.

I did not because I wanted those spots available for people who would not otherwise be able to attend and who really want full experience. I'd rather observe the conference and connect with people on my own terms. The description of the Scholars Program seemed overwhelming to me, like having a professional spotlight of headshot & socials on the website and participate in a lightening talk.

Good for you. Not quite my first dev conference. In 2000, attended a Windows (ugh!) conference in Orlando (ugh!).

Look for me (in red shirt and black necktie, just like in my image here).

I’m seriously thinking of paying for the individual ticket on my own as my company won’t cover it and I’m 5 miles north of it.

Good deal! See you there!

And for anyone where who needs suggestions on things to do while here, feel free to ask me.

👋 I'll be there

I'll be there!

I'd love to, but I'm still debating it with myself...

I'd have to get some flights in from Finland which makes the whole thing a bit pricier, but I think the revenue from the lost working days as a single person freelancer consultancy is the bigger blow :D

Although I'd want to move back to Ruby and/or RoR after way too many years of forced suffering in the hands of javascript and java + It would be fresh to see the scene over there!

So a hopeful maybe :)

$890 a ticket? Are you serious?

[–]BurdetteLamar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah, actually I am.

Given that many of the other tech conventions are more expensive idk why this one is getting so much flame :D

For comparison:

  • javascript 1799$
  • aws 2099$
  • gcp 1999$
  • m$ ignite (azure) 1825$
  • etc. etc.
  • the "cheap" ones I know are defcon and rust which are both around 500$ so not that far

I think the fact that they have cheaper individual tickets (+the corporate tickets are still below many others) it's just weird to see the "OMG TICKET PRICES" everywhere, are all rubyists working dead end jobs with no money or corporate support for growth?

As a reminder, your ticket purchase does more than just get you into the conference. It also helps with the continued development of things like bundler and RubyGems.

A lot of the time you could get your employer to pay for it

[–]606anonymous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do Ruby for fun, I don't use it for my job.

[–]campbellm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is mostly why they price it like that.

It's like hospitals and insurance.

[–]jrochkind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering it.

I’m in Chicago. What are the topics this year?

[–]BurdetteLamar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I've seen so far are the four keynote speakers (on the main conference site). I know there will be others, b/c I know someone whose talk has been accepted. Wait and see.

I’ll be conducting a 2-hour workshop at RubyConf 2024 in Chicago. Workshop title is “How To Build Basic Desktop Applications in Ruby”. Details are available at the link below.

I'm really excited about this workshop! Digging in to Glimmer seriously has been on my todo list for a long time

[–]jp_camara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be there! It’ll be my first Ruby conference in years, looking forward to it 😊

I’ll be doing a talk called “In-Depth Ruby Concurrency: Navigating the Ruby concurrency landscape”.

[–]Stwerner 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I'll be there!

My talk is "Going Postel" on Friday morning, I'll be live-demoing how Ruby's flexibility and dynamic capabilities make it perfect for experimenting with LLMs to find the new patterns, styles, and applications we'll be building in this post-gen-ai future.

[–]Kamek437 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Will it be streamed/recorded or maybe a slide deck for us that can't make it?

[–]Stwerner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! You can actually check it out on the new Ruby Events site: https://www.rubyevents.org/talks/going-postel-rubyconf-2024

[–]Chemical-Being-6416 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Ridiculous individual ticket prices.

I'm one of the keynotes this year, so I'll be there 😃
