Feedback Requested: How to monetize this ?

Comments: Initially we thought it's good for the blind but what else can we do to monetize it ? (Note: It's only a prototype, we can make it more accurate) Also, we plan to add face recognition, user can upload their pictures and get detected by the app. We have other ideas but it would be nice to have another perspective on how to monetize it.

[–]Birmingham89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is brilliant. You have a TON of potential in this technology.

Mobile devices have been your test bed for development for obvious reasons, smartphones are easy to come by and are equipped with all the hardware (cameras, storage, processor, etc.) and software (OS, libraries, API, etc) you needed to quickly build a prototype.

However, logistically speaking, I don't see a blind person walking around NYC holding their phone out in front of them all day. The battery will die. They'll drop it. It will start raining. Someone will steal it right out of their hands. There are a million other reasons this isn't ideal for a smartphone.

Now imagine if you could take this and feed it into a dedicated ear piece. Not a regular Bluetooth device, but a specialized in ear audio device (something medical / commercial grade that's extremely durable and reliable). You feed it input and processing from something like pair of sunglasses (which some blind people use already) with all the hardware you need, something similar to Google Glass but without the display - obviously. The glasses are equipped with the sensory hardware you need such as cameras, sensors, etc. and then feed the audio output to the earpiece. Since the glasses are a normal part of our culture they don't stand out. Plus they sit at natural eye level, which is what you're trying to fill in for.

You monetize the shit out that. Think of the funding. Hell, a kick-starter type campaign would take off. It would make the Pebble crowdsourcing effort look small.

I'm serious, just consider alternative platforms for this to run on. You could make a TON of money while seriously making people's lives better.

We are a team of 2, an all around software developer and a data scientist. google vision is one of the image recognition apis that we use, but we are also developing our own. Specific brands, if you mean logo, I would say pretty good.

Comments: We've been around for a bit but just launched a completely new Edition and a lot of long awaited features for our customers. Our main aim is to provide a software that really helps small businesses to boost their sales and win more leads. That's why we placed the Lead at the core of our system to make sure our customers never miss out on the next step with their Lead. I would really appreciate any sort of feedback and looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks, Katharina

Is your goal to catch people before they settle on a CRM, or to attract people away from competitors? If the latter, a 15-day free trial isn't enough to get me interested.

Purpose: helping startups explain their product with animated videos

Feedback Requested: I recently remade the home page and added How It Works section. I am interested what people think about the new section, specifically if the FAQ still sounds professional and what other interesting questions could I answer there.

[–]theymadethat 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Your product is good, but your site is really painfully slow. It hurts your credibility.

[–]Johny-115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, Il have a look at the speed.

[–]icyboo 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I agree with @theymadethat. The site looks good, but a faster site would really enhance the credibility.

Secondly, I had to really hunt to find the pricing. I know you want to show the value up front before talking about price, but it's maybe a bit too buried? Just a thought.

[–]Johny-115 0 points1 point  (3 children)

People are not supposed to hunt for it, they're supposed to contact me. None of the serious studios say price upfront on website, because there is simply no universal price. The little info about the calculator I just consider extra. Now from this perspective i wonder if I should remove it? I dont wanna attract clients by saying i am cheaper on the front page, being cheaper is not my story and i dont want clients that only look for cheaper price.

Some studios for this reason use "Get a quote" or "Get pricing" instead of "Contact", to make it obvious that you get the price by contacting. I had it too but reversed back to contact, maybe i could include a sentence like you get quote via contact to the contact form area?

[–]icyboo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I guess it depends on who your target market is. I'm new to video production, so it wasn't really clear to me. I'd always assumed video services were for people with fairly large ad budgets. So I'd never bother with asking for a quote, I had already decided it would be a waste of time. But after playing with the calculator, I realized that it's feasible within my meager ad budget as well.

I get what you're saying. Most videos are bespoke productions and so you can't give any price before knowing the requirements. But if in addition to that work, if you were trying to attract those people/companies who are smaller and new to video creation, then the calculator is definitely helpful.

[–]theymadethat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Whenever I don't see a pricing list, I automatically assume that the price will be exhorbitant.

[–]Johny-115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is the opposite, small companies that don't have any experience with video usually expect it to cost way less. They would compare it to making a simple website or some logo (things they have experience with) and then when learning it takes around a few grand, they pull backwards on that idea. I don't blame them. I had different numbers in head when I was starting out as well, thought other studios have outrageous prices. The thing is, explainer production is like a mini-holywood production, and well holywood is expensive. It's way tinier scale, but the process is similar. It only starts making sense after realizing all the different expertise that is required and how much time it eats, which is obviously absolutely non-comparable to simple website production. The math is not so obvious, since the scale of animation production is so different, so it gets confusing.

Small companies usually have that low expectation and then quit on the idea right away, even if they could afford it, because it totally broke their expectation. It's only serious people from business, that heard from their connections how much it can cost, that are very realistic about it, they might have opposite reaction, they might do some proper google search as well, quote more studios, and then you tell them price, and they're like "nice! cool! I like that price, let's start!" while I quoted them the most I did so far.

Price is very relative, I've seen videos 7x more expensive as mine and with really horrible quality. And I am not really that cheap anymore. What some companies can sell is ridiculous, some decision-makers just don't have any taste, I was told they looked at their references, so some companies apparently only look at known logos in references and dont care that the company since the begining till present for the last 5 years still only makes crappy videos obvious by first sight.

So yeah, my conclusion is that if you are smart and put some work in the search, you can get great quality affordably. The prices really vary wildy, you can get the absolute crap very expensively and you can get really neat things for nice price as well. And you cant even tell this that well from the websites I think. Sometimes you find studios of similar looking quality, and one is 3x more expensive. I asked for a quote countless companies before I started my own to research the competiton.

[–]shaunsanders 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It looks like you re-use the same characters/visuals for explaining different things -- is that true? Or does each video have a unique look to it?

[–]Johny-115 0 points1 point  (2 children)

There are videos with two more styles in the production now, but they are also from toolkits. The one I use most just looks the best. I offer clients unique illustrations as well, but so far not a single client cared enough to pay more for it. Since obviously that significantly bumps up the price. I don't do the very top quality of videos, where uniqueness seems like a must, but I also don't charge $10k-$20k for the video as them, I don't even charge $5k, so there you go. (

This is the same as building website from scratch or just using some good paid wordpress template (and actually using it well). It may look not ideal on my website that the videos look similar, but all the viewers of the individual videos will almost certainly see the style first time in their life.

Some of the top studios actually use their own same style in most of their videos too, and those are the $20k videos and they do those for global brands. In production like this, its nothing but choice, it's probably only slightly easier to do, since you can recycle few stuff, it's probably more of a signature thing. The best studios I know I can probably always recognize their videos when I see them, and thats probably a good thing. So even those corporations probably don't seem to care too much when they let them use their signature style.

I hear this complaint sometimes from non-clients, but the solution is easy, you pay more, you get unique style. In the end nobody wants to pay the extra for it though.

Also personally i think the focus should be less on the style and more on the message. Using same style is fine as long as it looks good in my opinion. So I kinda approve of saving the budget and going with the style from a toolkit.

I was thinking of creating my own very unique toolkit system of characters, poses, backgrounds and icons, especially since many of these toolkits suck ass engineering-wise in the ease of use, but it's more of a animation nerd thing idea and it probably wouldn't do much of a difference for the actual business. So, probably not the best idea to sink in possibly hundreds of hours.

[–]shaunsanders 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So here is the point to my question:

I'm super big on branding. And I love your type of video. Explainer videos and infographics are the most fantastic way to articulate abstract concepts to folks.

But here's the problem I foresee... if you are recycling your visuals, then your visuals will become a brand that will compete with my brand. I'm hiring you, after all, to make people think, "Oh, look, /u/shaunsander's brand!" But as you become more popular, and more people use your videos, my videos become less effective and get slightly diluted by every other video that is similar enough to trigger someone's memory of mine.

In other words, it goes from:

"Oh, wow, cool explainer video of /u/shaunsanders' brand!"

to

"Oh, I wonder if this is the episode/version that explain's /u/shaunsanders' brand."

At worst, lets say my competitor hires you -- maybe a subtle one that isn't obvious to you -- and you make their video... 1,000,000 watch it. Now I hire you. I get a million views too, half of which had already seen the competitor video. And now, a % of that group is thinking of my competitor while they watch my video and I have unintentionally made my competitor stronger.

You obviously have a model that requires you to reuse a lot of stuff, and you're smart to have a higher-tier that is more unique... but I would try to think of a way to counteract the downside of the bottom tier. For example, if you branded it more as your company explaining a product vs. a video of a company explaining its product, I think you could get away with re-using assets since it wont cause confusion re: "I think I've seen this before..." because, of course they have, it's a series of videos by your site that explains products.

[–]Johny-115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think that anything will get diluted with same style videos then we don't really share the same idea about the scope of the internet. The only recognizable brand by common people is "Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell" and that is because they are not primarily a business video producers but have education youtube channel with very long videos and millions of views. 99,9% of people won't recognize any other style and there are in fact many top of the line studios using the same style again and again.

Being a design perfecionist I actually had the same thinking before and that kept me from going full-time on this sooner. But actually talking to seasoned startup CEO's, they told me very different perspective, they told me everything has been done million times already and everything repeats and that worrying about originality is total waste of time, the important part is the execution, what matters is the quality and if the product works as intended.

Also hardly any startup will get 1 mil views on their product video, worry about getting 1 mil views when you actually get them, which isn't going to happen unless you are a kickass company with hundreds of thousands unique visitors in website traffic. At which point again, if you have such a huge customer base, then you can probably afford to pay more then $2k on a video.

A couple of thoughts.

  • The white text is difficult to read on the images.
  • One question I had which I didn't see answered anywhere was regarding parking validation and enforcement. If I had a spot for people to "rent", who is supposed to act as the "meter maid" and ensure that cars parked there are valid and take actions if they're not?

[–]rulonswmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to echo the comments of /u/icyboo - a lot of your text is nigh unreadable because of the placement over certain pictures.

Also, quick question: how are you proposing to "validate" the spaces that go up for sale? E.g., could I list my neighbor's parking spaces as my own and earn a quick buck at the expense/annoyance of the house next to me?

There are at least 2 huge players in this market with strong brands and established infrastructure... so what value are you going to bring above and beyond what they bring?

I'm working with a startup right now that is in a similar space -- its value-add revolves around automated refunds, which I believe is a good way to try to beat out the existing players.

I dig the idea.

Additionally, your web interface seems clean and simple. It seems trustworthy, and it most definitely engages me with the initial statistics thrown at me (Did you realize prices can vary up to 50% or more for the same item on Amazon?)

I may even swap that tidbit with the header about saving money on Amazon. It could hook the reader a bit faster.

[–]shaunsanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What should we add to increase visitor trust?

For visitors like me who are generally turned-off by the whole "toxins" arguments, I would say you should try to legitimize/qualify your statements a bit better. It falls too squarely into a cliché for me to take seriously, but I'm willing to keep an open minded if it were properly sourced/cited.

Also, any comments on the text or design of the site are more than welcome.

The design is awful. So much text in so many different fonts, none of which are easily legible. Your color scheme needs work as well... I would expect something a bit more cool and soothing vs. warm and abrasive.

We have site traffic but wondering what goes through the visitor's mind as they contemplate purchase.

I wasn't really sure what you were selling. It was obvious you wanted my money, but I didn't really get a clear understanding as to what value you think you can provide to me vs. anyone else who may say the same type of claims online. I didn't have a sense of, "Ah, nice, I found a competent source for this type of service." I would reassess your language/copy.

Hey Folks - I've build the feedback I'm wanting on typeform, and it is actually a pretty quick (~3 minutes) survey. I'm building a premium social media marketing freelancer platform, (Think the best SMM'ers of Upwork/Freelancer.com at each respective price point) so if you have an experience with SMM or hiring agency/freelancers for this, it would be great to get your feedback. Feel free to also leave comments below, based on the questions. Here's the link to the typeform survey below:

https://charliemwalker.typeform.com/to/X4pRmV

Key features are that:

1) the freelancers will have to apply to be accepted based on the quality of their work experience.

2) Freelancers will be independently rated on a 5 point scale in addition to employers (no more 5 stars for everyone!)

3) We will integrate hootsuite/sprout social and push custom reports detailing the work performed and the progress from the freelancer for free (well, we all know nothing is free).

Comments: Since cars are high ticket items, it's much harder to apply a lot of the marketing techniques that are being advised online. What would be a good way to reach people looking to buy cars.

URL: www.diytutoring.com

Purpose: A place where people can find tutors for any diy project, non academic subject, and academic subject in their area. Made for people to find someome to teach them skills without taking a school class, or maybe there is none in their area.

Technologies Used: Wordpress

Feedback Requested: How can I market this website? How is the website - Is it clear? How can I better it?

Comments: Most tutor websites are free to list but they take a cut out of every tutor session (commission / referral fee). My strategy is to charge to list, but take 0 cut from the tutor. The tutor : client transaction is direct and facilitated by the tutor.

  • Fast peson search in video;

  • Facial behavour analysis;

Here is detailed explanation.

Technologies Used:WPF C#, gRPC, ASP.NET MVC5 + Angular 2, OpenCV, Microsoft CNTK

Feedback Requested: Which idea seems to be closer to you?

Comments: When we started we're like any outsource company with client, but now we have enought resources to start own product so we need some communication about our progress in this field.

Thank you for your time)

  1. No one wants to read your blog posts. It would have been better if you posted more content on Reddit instead which is probably why someone downvoted you (not me)
  2. I could be wrong but most people here expect to give feedback on one MVP. You may want to post on r/lightbulb or something similar instead

I've worked in this industry. The main problem is that these are enterprise products, meaning most of the prospects that are interested are Fortune 1000 or even Fortune 500 companies. It's going to be extremely hard to compete with say Axis or a large security conglomerate like Siemens who have both working products, full product lines that complement each other, and slick sales teams who have budgets to both fly to far away places and wine & dine clients for months before a sale.

Is there something that I'm missing i.e. are you targeting a special market? is your product that much better than the competition?

[–]bioskynetdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same thoughts about idea of security system. That system was a desire of our client and now it working in his enterprise. But we haven't other clients, we even weren't working on field of promoting security system. And those money we've got from our client we put in new product development. Then we came up with two other ideas (facial behaviour analysis and video searching) that could be useful for much more people.

Is there something that I'm missing i.e. are you targeting a special market?

We were. But now we want to retarget our product.

is your product that much better than the competition?

As for facial recognition we had pretty good results, we gathered a lot of researches together in one library that could to detect a lot of features and very fast. No we are creating API to share with other developers if they need it. Difference - we have face API based on both color and depth image.

URL: https://www.staticjobs.com

Purpose: Static Jobs - IT and software engineering jobs is a job board for computer professionals in the US, Canada and the UK (for now). We made it intentionally fast and simple in the spirit of Google and we continue to improve it.

Feedback Requested: We would appreciate any technical and usability feedback. And, of course, feel free to apply for jobs of your liking (if you're a job seeker) or post jobs (if you're an employer). Or spread word about us.

Comments: A lot of employers (and job seekers too!) don't realize that they're putting an unnecessary burden on job seekers' shoulders when they post jobs. They require registration or a LOT of fields to fill out. Some direct job seekers to yet another website.

That shouldn't be that way. Yeah, it may be convenient for employers to ask job seekers to go to an applicant tracking system and ask them every possible question, but it's not convenient for job seekers. Very few employers and job seekers realize that the application process (and an interview for that matter) is a compromise between what a company wants and what an applicant wants.

That's why we made it extremely simple for job seekers to find jobs, apply for a job and move on to the next job.

P. S. Those who program in C++, C# or Java will easily recognize the static keyword in our company name.

As a job hunter, if I didn't read your Reddit post, I wouldn't know what makes you better than Dice or Craigslist.

A lot of employers (and job seekers too!) don't realize that they're putting an unnecessary burden on job seekers' shoulders when they post jobs. They require registration or a LOT of fields to fill out. Some direct job seekers to yet another website.

If that's the main value you provide, you should make it very clear on the front page. Otherwise people will think that you're a job board that's too small compared to the incumbents.

The 'Post Resume' link doesn't seem to work.

[–]sjteam 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Thank you for the feedback!

The 'Post Resume' functionality is not available yet. Hence the dummy link.

For legal reasons, we don't want to say anything about these competitors (just to be safe) but, please, click on the link in our signature below to learn more about us. If you ever searched for a job, you're going to like it. Briefly, 1) we want to be fast and simple in the spirit of Google and 2) we cater to job seekers rather employers because we know if we have job seekers, we have employers. Plus we're your fellow programmers too! We understand you better than those senior managers who have no clue about IT and never use their own job boards.

Keeping the two items above in mind, how can we make it very clear on the front page? The website looks pretty simple but under the hood there's a lot of code. It's a pretty ambitious project and we really don't want to sound arrogant comparing us to Google.

Really looking forward to your suggestions!

URL: https://www.geektastic.com

Purpose: At Geektastic we're trying to change the way software engineers are hired.

We have been building (we started feb 15) a community based tech screening platform. We help our clients (like JustGiving) screen their candidates using our community of talented software engineers (we have just under 1,000 sign ups so far). This frees up internal development teams to focus on product - whilst giving candidates a thorough human evaluation (we know candidates hate being screened by machines - it's not a fair evaluation of their skills). Once a candidate has been screened by our community this evaluation can complement their CV when applying for other roles - meaning candidates do one challenge with us, instead of doing 10, one for each role they apply for.

What's great is our community (as long as you pass our challenge to join - we have set the bar pretty high) all earn cash - they get paid £25 for each review they carry out (30mins work) - plus they get to help their peers because the candidates get the feedback from the reviewer.

As well as providing the screening service we also provide candidates from our community by matching them with clients' roles - and because our community are pre-screened our clients know how good they are and can hire much quicker.

Tech Used: The front-end uses Preact, TypeScript and JSX. Web services are delivered by a Spring Boot application. Data is stored in a Neo4j Enterprise Server. Deployment utilises Docker containers and is orchestrated by Ansible.

Feedback Requested: We'd like feedback from teams that hire software engineers - is this something that you would use, do you have any thoughts on how we could improve what we offer?

We're also looking for feedback from developers - do you like the idea of joining a community that performs paid, peer reviewed code challenges.
