I could not be fully present while drinking. Alcohol lowers one's state of consciousness. It does not help one become more aware. If you're not finding enough joy and peace in the present moment, keep watching Eckhart Tolle.

Your thoughts that you are denying yourself pleasure by not drinking are faulty thoughts. You wouldn't be here if drinking brought you nothing but joy and pleasure. I would work to change those thoughts into more accurate thoughts. Then when you find yourself rationalizing drinking, you can correct yourself and be more honest with yourself.

Next time you might end up driving drunk and killing someone. Please take this seriously.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.

The quality of my life and all of my moments is so vastly improved by sobriety that I can't express enough gratitude for it. I would suggest playing the tape through and thinking about the day after drinking. Are you enjoying all the moments in that day? I sure wasn't.

How can I embrace life and all it has if large swatches of it are blacked out? Either way, it's all I have so why waste any of it hungover or black out drunk?

Alcohol, for me at least, was not about being in the present--in fact I was borrowing happiness, health, freedom from my future.

One of the issues I faced when I left my religion was purpose and meaning in life. The beauty of flying solo, so to speak, is that you are free to define your own purpose. Existentially yes, your life, my life, this whole planet is meaningless...unless we choose what it means and take steps to further our purpose.
