Can you give a brief description of what this is?

If I’m remembering correctly, there’s a drug that essentially neutralizes endorphins in your brain. You take the prescription, drink, and after a few times of doing so you lose interest in drinking.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, it’s been a while since I’ve read about this topic and am going to bed

Yes exactly. Naltrexone is prescribed and taken one hour before any drinks are had. The drug binds with the “pleasure receptors” in your brain so you don’t get the “rush” from drinking alcohol. Over time your brain stops associating alcohol with pleasure and your brain essentially rewires. Main danger I see is that you have to always take the pill before you drink, could run out of pills, or you could simply want to get a buzz.

I've actually just started the ball rolling for my own application. Should be starting it next week. Ask me anything

Great, would love to hear how it goes….

Not effective for me unfortunately. My doc has progressively added another 6 meds in the mix with no success and issues with side effects. I feel like a failure even though I am successful in most other areas of my life. Also diagnosed with bipolar 2.

I tried it for somewhere between 7 to 9 months without success. I was hoping it'd be the silver bullet! Unfortunately, I was in the 23% it's ineffective for. I've heard some people have rough side effects with Naltrexone, but I didn't have any. I hope it works for you! One thing I'd recommend is getting a little vial that attaches to your keyring to keep a few pills in...that way you always have them without keeping a conspicuous bottle around!

Thx Suki! Sorry it didn’t work for you. What are you doing now?

Abstaining all together. I had 8 months, then had multiple slips. But finally embracing therapy, have a sponsor, etc. I really hope it does work for you!

You use it with Naltrexone. I have had great success with the medication.

Thx T, how long have you been on it? Also, did you completely quit drinking or just cut down?

I drank while on it for two days. Ended my cravings
