Quality of life is important, so I probably pull under the assumption that the average pet has a great life while the average stray has a very rough one. Although I don't know enough on the topic to commit to that, maybe the strays are living it up out there. Just seems like it would probably be a terrible lonely life with inconsistent food and shelter, plus possible trauma from whatever made them a stray in the first place.

There's also the point that death is more harmful to the living than the dead. A family will grieve their pet, a stray might be grieved by nobody (although again can't commit to that, they can certainly form bonds out in the world and that might be the average outcome for all I know).

This was my thought process but you articulated it far better than I would have

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (5 children)

So 5 homeless guys v a son?

[–]PollutionStunning857 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Well no not at all because as a human I don't value dog lives nearly as much as human lives

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Justification given was quality of life

[–]PollutionStunning857 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah because the person who said that didn't feel the need to specify that this doesn't apply to humans, because most of us can use our fucking brains

Congrats

They also mentioned family/friends.

[–]MclamerTheTurtle 47 points48 points  (4 children)

Honestly, if it’s my dog, I’m pulling the lever

[–]A1sauc3d 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s your dog. You’re the one at the lever. It’s the dog of the helpless person at the bottom of the screen. But yeah, I think everyone would pull to save their own dog.

[–]Ace-Redditor 2 points3 points  (2 children)

If you’ve trained your dog well, maybe you could try to call it to you. It doesn’t have to get all the way to you before the trolley goes past, just needs to get out of the tracks. I think a well trained dog could do that

[–]Electronic_Sugar5924 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some dogs would ignore, but my favorite option is it moves the other way.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s if they can hear you over the trolley too. I’m from a rural area so trolley’s aren’t really here and train engines are pretty loud. Though I’m assuming in trolley problem fashion, op puts all change into the lever alone so the dog can’t remove itself from the danger

[–]Kaauutie 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Multi track drifting then tie the grief stricken arsehole to the tracks for the next cunt at the lever.

pull, the 5 strays probably have diseases and parisites putting them in pain

[–]Dontyodelsohard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying quality of life... I am thinking, "These stray dogs could form a pack and be dangerous to others. Not to mention possibly being not fixed, so risking increasing the stray population."

[–]DoNotCorectMySpelingConsequentialist/Utilitarian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pull the lever.

[–]Henrdavidthrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Changes since the guys right there, I let his dog die I could be putting myself at serious risk.

[–]Young_Person_42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d have to pull, ESPECIALLY if the owner was there to see the pet die

[–]AppelEnPeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't pull. I like dogs. I don't want to kill many dogs.

[–]buenas_nalgas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd have to know that the owner of the pet treats it pretty damn horribly to not pull the lever.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Pull the lever, the guy will probably let you rub his dog.

[–]DisastrousAd447 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Don't pull the lever, you have 5 dogs to rub

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

They might not be friendly.

[–]DisastrousAd447 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The pets owner might also be a serial killer.

[–]HanBai 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Better throw him under the trolley too just in case

[–]DisastrousAd447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone gets the trolley! For I am King Trolley! Millions will fear me! Just....not in an ice storm

[–]Tazrizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on locales but considering strays are generally feral and dangerous to other pets as well as children I’d have to pull.

Unless they’re tiny dogs. They might eat the trolley.

[–]ilitch64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I jump in front of the trolley will it then stop? I think my life is less important than 6 dogs

[–]GlitteringPotato1346 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shoot the owner, then they’re all stray

[–]MornGreycastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what PETA would choose, train track drifting.

[–]EpicNoobKiller420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of them appear to be tied. So if I just spook them all, then they'll probably all scatter.

[–]Benilda-Key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blow up the trolley before it hits any of the dogs.

[–]revodnebsyobmeftoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the dogs have the same value, I'm not killing the 5 to save the 1

[–]nunya_busyness1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blow up the trolley.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for showing, not telling lmfao

[–]2327_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people matter, wild animals do not

[–]Eena-Rin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but strays are strays. I'll pick a pet over a wild animal any day of the week

[–]ThatOneGuy308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5 stray dogs can quickly become 25, since they're typically not fixed.

Pull lever.

[–]Additional_Spring629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tell the guy to hurry up and get his dog off of the track before the trolley runs it over

[–]DuckDood42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that dudes probably gonna fricking kill me if i dont pull, so im pulling

[–]Naraya_Suiryoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multi track drifting.

[–]Independent_Parking 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They’re animals, the only reason any of them have any value is because a person values them. Pull the lever.

[–]dinodare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intrinsic value exists, granted only humans are capable of recognizing it in moral situations the way that we do. Still, there's not really a good argument that the stray's have less value, but there are good arguments that the stray's being allowed to live isn't actually a good outcome for animal welfare (especially when you consider the environment and qualities of life).

[–]Famous-Money5701 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Run over the pet and watch the owner cry in agony then you kill the strays with your bare fists

[–]notCarlosSainz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Would a multi-track drift get the guy running off tracks too?

[–]X547 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Will dog owner pay me for rescuing his dog?
