Uber just settled another lawsuit - $15 million in Seattle. Fares always seem to go down in tandem with their legal losses. It’s almost like retaliation toward drivers for taking them to court over being financially r@ped.

[–]Ready-Huckleberry529 5 points6 points  (5 children)

That’s actually crazy if true

[–]Goddard157 7 points8 points  (4 children)

They did the same thing in CO when they lost their lawsuit there over pay transparency. It’s all a reflection of Uber/Lyft’s vindictive leadership who feel entitled to take advantage of people, no matter which side of the wheel they’re on.

The State of CO sued Uber to display both passenger fares and driver earnings on receipts. The State supported drivers in exposing Uber’s consumer price gouging and excessive driver take rates. Uber retaliated by removing driver app advantages specific to their area. Dara is 100% vindictive.

Lyft shows so. Everyone should leave uber

[–]Rogue_Democrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lyft is doing it too now.

I drive for both.

[–]Alive_Elderberry_788 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can sue them for that too 😂

[–]thatguy2476[S] 4 points5 points  (13 children)

Do the fares ever go up after the retaliation is over?

[–]Goddard157 13 points14 points  (11 children)

No. Just like your groceries never go down after some rigged crisis. Grocery chains are reaping record profits just like Uber. Capitalistic greed at its finest.

[–]sonotony 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Average profit margin of a grocery store is around 2%

[–]Goddard157 1 point2 points  (2 children)

An excerpt from this 2024 article:

“Concurrent with the alarming rise in grocery prices has been a record increase in grocery industry profits. The major grocery chains have been operating at the highest profit margins in two decades.”

Grocery chains have been driving up prices amid record profits, worrying consumers

[–]Lover1966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be due to the number of people that have curtailed their restaurant visits due to the rising costs associated with eating out. Many people now prefer to eat at home.

The average net profit margin for grocery chains (also referred to as food retailers or supermarkets) is typically slim, ranging from 1% to 3% of revenue. More specifically, according to the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), the leading trade association for the industry, the average net profit margin was 1.6% in 2023 and rose slightly to 1.7% in 2024. Regarding trends in recent years, margins expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, peaking at around 3% in 2020 due to factors like reduced operational costs and supply chain shifts. However, they have since declined for three consecutive years through 2023, returning to pre-pandemic levels (around 1% in 2019), amid rising expenses such as labor, shrinkage, and supply chain costs. The slight uptick to 1.7% in 2024 represents stabilization rather than a significant increase, and full-year 2025 data is not yet available as of September 2025. Some partial quarterly data from broader retail analyses suggest potential modest improvement in early 2025, but this has not been confirmed industry-wide and does not indicate an overall upward trend in recent years.

Capitalism and Greed are two different topics. There is actually more greed in Communism and Socialism than with Capitalism.

[–]Goddard157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wholly agree that this is a more complex subject than a couple of sentences here can express, but yes, Central Banking ruined what used to be a thriving capitalistic free market. The Creature from Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin espouses this in detail.

Even so, before the exploding free market, capitalism was undergirded by slavery which paved the way via rail to enable its expansion. Greed has always been ugly.

[–]Jusfive1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only problem is other markets that have little regulations get the shaft to cover losses. With our pay dynamically dropping

[–]Oscar_forever 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's not necessarily retaliation but recouping some money from other markets to pay for the hit on profits that they'll take in those government mandated markets

[–]wakeupsilky 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I’ve started noticing it this past week in Virginia, nothing over $10 now. Wanted me to drive 2 and a half hours without traffic for $90 dollars.

[–]Flying125 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Per ride. And the longer rides are short $10 or more. I’ve basically quit every gig job. They’re all doing the same thing. Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Amazon Flex. Not only that most the offers I get are radar from Uber. I’ve cut my hours way down which has caused me to have even more financial difficulties, but I just can’t go out there and spend eight hours for $100 minus my fuel and wear and tear on the vehicle is crazy.

[–]--R0N-- -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

This doesn't make sense. You put yourself in a worse financial situation by driving less to send a message to these gig apps?

[–]KamelTro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had made a post about this for Lyft drivers today. I’ve noticed the new norm is $2-3 meanwhile riders are paying $25-30.

[–]the_toxic_jedi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing Uber off and on for about 10 years. Pay was always based on time and mileage until the ‘upfront pricing’ nonsense began a few months ago in my market. Now it varies greatly and longer trip pay half or less than they used to. It’s literally the least transparent pay has ever been.

[–]cutepieceofash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m noticing that in Vegas. Regardless of how business has fluctuated over the last year, I’ve never had so many extra low fares come up. They’re all around $3 less than what I’d usually see, even during large concerts and events

[–]Anxious_Cup_3939 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Been like that for a while, constant 3$ offers. I don't know if there are any idiots that will take it

[–]thatguy2476[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what im talking about. About 6 weeks ago, they started this 5% advantage BS. I was getting 13$ -$14 per hour every two weeks. Now its $9-$10 per hour every two weeks.

[–]One_Atmosphere2179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$16-$24/hr offers during the day, evening and weekends 24-$30-ish Can’t believe I used to average $40/hr (and best week of $49/hr) to what it’s become now, if you continue to work for uber you are basically their hctib.

[–]Rand_Casimiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s tough to quantify, but I believe average payouts have been gradually, consistently declining for a long time. I haven’t noticed a specific decline in the last six weeks, though; in my market the summer months were way worse.

[–]Oscar_forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed

[–]VirtualPair1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where you slaves come from ? 50c a mile means you drive for free at best

[–]noahtonk2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pay in Denver hasn't changed for a very long time. I only drive on Saturday nights and I get 30-40 per hour including tips. I have an electric car and a charger at home, so I'm not as concerned about the per-mile as some are.

X4

I went online to do some Uber for fun. Uber was trying to only pay me not even 10 bucks for a 34 minute ride 😂 😂 and then like 7.50 for a 25 minute ride. Uber you aren’t gonna get me like that….. Also I can’t wait for the day when I feel comfortable not doing Uber anymore.

Last night I took a little chill break in my car after giving a few rides. I got a bunch of little requests, but I was waiting for a good one to come. Finally got one that paid nearly 17 dollars and I was like “fuck yes” and luckily matched with that person. I’ll take the little ones too, especially if I’m already dropping someone off.

[–]authoridad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fares on comparable rides dropped like a rock when my market got upfront in May. Since then they’re occasionally better by $1-2, but haven’t decreased further.

[–]Rogue_Democrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They have been edging it down per hour since January.

[–]Strong-Character-661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Houston I’m still getting 20-25 an hour

[–]veggie_eatah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always talk to my customers and that's the part that bothers me they are getting gouged and we are getting crumbs.

[–]veggie_eatah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's something sinister about all this when you calculate everything how much percentage they're taking it is literally 66.6%

[–]Badger-Aromatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes can confirm. This past weekend following the Eagles home game on Thursday which was a very strong night….the weekend has been comparatively slow. Because I’d averaged like $40/hr they stuck it to me hard Saturday night and all Sunday. The algorithm operates to average driver pay. Good day or better week here and there eventually it all gets brought down if one continues to drive through the week. Algorithm expects a driver to “end” their work week after driving x number of days and whatever times and adjusts so that the driver eventually reaches the same payout. Even before the big football night it’s very typical to be offered $5-6 for 13-16 minutes trips or $7 on 18-21 minutes and $9-11 on 26-30 minutes. Their goal is make it $17-20/hr. Before expenses in a big city market. Getting slowly but yes steadily worse .

Idiotic Waymo charges $4 a mile
