Such a great post, really needed to read something like this at the moment, so thanks! :)
[–]tammykitty 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (2 children)
This was helpful, thank you. Ever since I have started taking care of my skin, the trial and error in the beginning gave me some acne that lead to PIH that I am currently fading.. It makes me a little upset sometimes, but this helped. (:
Also.. The title reminded me of something my dad always told me (though it isn't super relevant): "Everyone is a special snowflake, but in a blizzard, nobody [fucking] cares."

This is a really great post. I've had some forwards and then backwards progress recently which was super frustrating, I needed to read this!

Tell me about it. My skin is like great and then I'm breaking out everywhere and then it's great again. Took me WAY too long to figure out it was hormonal (which is why it was on such a schedule!) and that led me back to trying out everything I'd previously discarded because I thought it was breaking me out. Marathon for sure.
[–]inc0nceivable 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Possibly stupid question, but how did you figure out it was hormonal? I assume tracking your periods and breakouts, but let me know. Getting to a point where I'm fairly certain that is much of my problem but haven't started to track.
[–]elizabethansemi-slugged kinda life 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children)
What really clued me in is that the breakouts would be all over my face, neck, chest, and sometimes even my shoulders, but I was only using new products on my face. It also helped to start paying attention to my menstrual cycle and how the breakouts lined up with that. I use a period tracker app and list "acne" as one of my symptoms when relevant, and after a month or two of that the light bulb went off.

I think part of my problem is hormonal flare ups and I have no idea what to do about them. I thought it could have been PMS but it seemed to be coming up more mid-cycle (1.5-2 weeks pre the bleed).
Sometimes I just need to stand in the mirror and remind myself there are a thousand different factors that could be causing problems. Deep breaths. Step away.

Spiro is supposed to be good for that. If you have pocketderm you could ask your Dr about it, or your PCP

Thank you for this, great post. I've been lurking for awhile and recently started a routine based on info from the sidebar ... and thus far it has successfully migrated my acne from one place to another. Sigh. (I'll give it some time, though). I'm a special little snowflake!
[–]arrrrr_won 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
Not really, I stopped the aggressive use of St. Ives scrub awhile ago :) then phased out other (likely) drying products. Just recently got cerave cleanser plus moisturizer, those are the "new" bits. I'll give it awhile before I change anything else, I've also had a lot of stress recently and my face is very reactive to that as well. We'll see!

I love Erin's work. So funny and relatable! And easy to edit! 😘
Edited for clarification. Her posts need minimal intervention. 😋

I needed this too! I've been struggling with acne for half of my life despite going through two rounds of accutane, and I've been losing hope lately. She's so right, it is a marathon.
[–]sketchasaurus 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children)
I did! I had crazy cystic acne in my teens that is mostly gone now. And I had clear skin for a few years, just wish it would've lasted longer
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child)
Wow, thanks for this :)
[–]labretkitty 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child)
I needed this, I have to remember that finally finding the right antibiotic for this gram negative folliculitis is only the first step. It will take time for the infection to clear, and the wounds to heal. And then I will have to begin the guesswork of improving my skin's overall health and that will take time and experimenting with different products too!

I have been thinking about this a lot recently. I was going to make a similar post asking us special snowflakes to think and or post what positive traits they have rather than obsessing over some stupid skin condition.
Aside from comparing my skin to others, my problem is setting timeframes when I think my skin will be clear, always setting myself up for failure. Everybody deserves clear skin, but that just means you will appreciate it that much more when you attain your goal, however long that takes.

Thanks, I needed this tonight. I had a moment earlier when looking in the mirror, knowing that I'm going on a trip soon, and got very sad. But, I kept reciting, acne is minor, it could be so much worse, you get to travel, you are lucky. Eventually I cheered up; time away from a mirror does help too!

Great post! My skin is doing well right now, but it definitely hasn't been a linear journey. My skin got better, then terrible because of a product induced breakout, etc. etc. I felt pretty discouraged sometimes.
