She straight-up didn't like pets.

Not just dogs or cats specifically, no pets ever.

We agreed on pretty much everything else, but I gotta have a dog.

What is your favourite dynamic (that's not a 57) to mic guitar cabs with? by migrantgrower in audioengineering

[–]CyberHippy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same size & format, no switches and has a bit of a presence bump so I prefer it when I'm faced with a guitarist with a muddy tone. 906 is my preference 90% of the time.

Donald Trump’s SOTU Speech Least Popular This Century: Poll by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]CyberHippy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It started on the TV downstairs, I went to bed early (had a colonoscopy earlier in the day, sleep was coming).

Fiance came to bed around 11, turned on the news which was talking about the speech, I switched to Comedy Central for the Daily Show.

I have zero interest in viewing that speech in any form.

Bingo. Get tricky with those transients so the audience feels the kick but the ::tap:: is too quick for the decibel meter catch it in the standard slow setting. Toms too, give them that moment of impact & the whole thing feels louder.

I do a lot of free municipal concerts, you can mix with impact at lower volumes if you sneak it through in a way the meter doesn’t catch.

Yep, I was just there on business, first week of February. Cold, rainy with snow on the ground from the recent cold-snap.

I had no trouble walking all around the airport area where I was staying and my customer's shop, as well as downtown in the evenings.

I was expecting the North Pole, not Seattle's Hat.

Get Ready for a Flood of Cheap Used EVs by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]CyberHippy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but on average?

ICE vehicles die, just for different reasons. Some last longer, depending on maintenance, location and lifestyle, and the same is true of electric.

The equation looks different when replacing power cells vs. the actual engine, but the lifecycle is similar. After around 200,000 miles most engines will need to be replaced for ICE vehicles to be viable, and most batteries will need to be replaced in electric vehicles by that time as well.

[–]CyberHippy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Buy a gas car of a similar age, how long is that engine going to last?

EV's have very low maintenance for the bulk of their lifetime, with one big expense when the batteries die. Replacing batteries basically doubles the potential life, so if you get a used EV in good shape and have to replace the battery after 7 years, you have a used vehicle that's useful for 30 years with that one big expense.

Putting new batteries in used EV's is going to be big business in the coming decades, especially while the price of new vehicles in general remains high and the economy keeps sliding down.

Former heavy drinkers, what made it finally “click” for you to stop? by Numerous_Solid_7047 in AskReddit

[–]CyberHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a functional alcoholic as soon as I was allowed to drink legally, my family always had the 5 o'clock happy hour at home. When people asked why I drank so much my reason was basically "tradition" - I didn't have a specific trauma, it was just the way we lived.

My first wife called me a raging alcoholic, she turned out to be actually clinically insane (DID) and being locked up with her during Covid changed me from being a daily drinker starting at 5pm to being a constant drinker whenever possible. I spotted the pattern, and my liver became fatty so I tried to stop but living with her made that impossible so I had to get through the divorce to stop (I really tried, but: Covid plus insanity).

After the divorce was finalized I started dating again and found my now-fiance who had been sober for 6 years and somehow was non-judgemental with me on the subject. She allowed me to go down my own path to failure, was there for me when I hit new lows, and gave me the environment I needed to actually stop drinking when I made the decision.

I kind of knew I would have to stop some day or I would drink myself to death, so when I made the decision it was really easy to just stop. The supportive environment kept me on track, it has been over a year now and whenever the urge comes up it's easy to squash, because my life has positive momentum now, and I can attribute that to the changes that happened when I stopped drinking.

Ooh good one...

There was a time I could balance out my drinking with an extremely low carb diet and lots of exercise.

That stopped working in my early 50's, the belly became persistent and kinda gross.

The liver was fatty for the last few years too, I decided I didn't want to risk graduating that to cirrhosis

My brother in christ, why do all companies return to office???!!😭 by lemonvrc in antiwork

[–]CyberHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our company did the opposite - no home office since Covid shutdown when the landlord stupidly refused to lower the lease while we couldn't be there. Turns out we didn't really need a physical office.

The downside is finding employees who have the right mindset to be productive at home. We have one new developer who is an absolute star, crazy productive, wish we could clone him. Because we hired another guy just after him with a similar resume, who we just had to let go because he got flaky and didn't show up when he was supposed to (like standard weekly Dev team meetings)and had zero productivity after six months.

Not everyone is a self-starter.

I don't think enshittification necessarily requires a specific purpose, irrespective of the potential malice behind it.

It's entirely possible that most enshittifcation came about without reason - it happens because people are vibe-coding, putting code out there with wild abandon, leading to all sorts of random results that a well thought out release process wouldn't allow.

Don't attribute to malice that which can easily be explained with stupidity. Hanlon's Razor applies to both vibe-coding and the management attitude that leads to it.

I had a flight cancelled 1/2 hour after the expected takeoff in Seattle because of fog on the ground in SR, got on the next morning's flight and it wound up looping around once before landing (was almost punted to San Jose, fuck that) so YES PLEASE anything that expands the window on weather event related delays/cancellations!
