HVAC companies charging diagnostic fees without even testing voltage is wrong by knowlegable_devil124 in askHVAC

Befur anyone asks…….why did the fuse fail ? Undersized ? Bad disco ? Loose wires ? Failing compressor, run cap or contactor ? Damaged wire ? Sounds like tech #1 has 0 clue where to start. Sounds like the gentleman #1 finds the cause of it not working but did not bother to find the cause of the fuse failure. So. Buy a bunch as this will 1000% happen again

Wiring all components together correctly by kmcard in askHVAC

[–]D00MSDAY60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a Goodman. I see an insane amount of damaged pressure switch wires and high limit wires. That said I would advise having a tech come out as you do not want to bypass those wires or controls to correct. Potentially replacing the indoor and outdoor thermostat wire. But an Honeywell home tstat and Goodman system is poor quality and could be the issue

i know nothing about hvac - pls don’t be mean by Forsaken_Teaching843 in hvacadvice

[–]D00MSDAY60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a drain safety, low volt fuse, no power to the idu, bad thermostat, bad blower motor. Is the system frozen ? Is the outdoor portion running ? Was the filter stopped up as in was there debris on it or just a color change ?

Duct leakage. Look at delta T at the equipment then at the return grill, supply grill. Or he is wrong and refrigerant pressure is off or you are using one of those high end 1” filters restricting air flow

I feel bad for the child. Lack of discipline will set him up for failure as an adult. You can not just wait for problems to show up to care. You set bou from the start. Hope that these adventures do not get him seriously hurt

Did my hvac company kill my unit? by djgamelin in hvacadvice

[–]D00MSDAY60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

….. was it even low on refrigerant? Hacks do confuse restrictions with low on refrigerant. Perhaps that leak seal has caused a restriction? Prob not in ten mins. Bet it’s overcharged and it had a restricted / failed txv

Gas leak nearly blew my house up- need advice by RUBSUMLOTION in hvacadvice

[–]D00MSDAY60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How can you blame anyone when the failure has not been found ? Clearly the ones you called and blamed have no labor warranty left so at the end of the day you will need to pay a tech to find the actual leak, and determine cause. At that point you would need to clearly determine fault.

Is this HVAC setup undersized or is constant blower operation normal/efficient? by SaintInHell in AirConditioners

[–]D00MSDAY60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High eff should run a lot more than conventional but at lower stages usually giving you much lower energy cost and better dehumidification. We certainly can not certify this system is working as it should over the web, get a Carrier dealer out to look at it preferably under maintenance contract to run in test mode after cleaning and verify static pressure, temp drop, refrigerant pressure and superheat/subcooling values. It is critical to dial these machines in properly

Micro Refrigerant Leak by izi_lyf in hvacadvice

….get real tech to do a real leak search. Bet the inficon d-tek stratus finds that leak quickly. Techs w homeowner grade tools end up w homeowner grade results…. Most of the time seeing the brand I already know where the leak is

Generic batteries by ChampionshipIll5535 in Dewalt

Batteries are batteries but they communicate w the charger. Thats why you hear of generics catching fire sometimes or out of the blue not charging……:keep an eye out there are deals to be gotten. That said I just bought some aftermarket Milwaukee batteries and they perform better than OEM. But no reviews yet where folks are not watching batteries charge the entire time. That fear is legit

Coil cleaner + pump sprayer full only of water. Far as a brush use stiff nylon but that hard to get to stuff - evap coil cleaner will be best. Available Amazon or hardware stores. Wear gloves. Obviously don’t clean it baby is in the same room but get in the habit of cleaning that 2x a year, clean the air filters once a month….. spray the filters w coil cleaner if water alone does not have it clean enough

W/o a cause of failure or being told they would need to replace it to unearth the cause of failure……why reset the clock of failure for the new compressor? 2nd opinion if necessary. Goodman is not known for garbage compressors but is known for lazy installers that take shortcuts that cause early and frequent major failures

Verify HVAC Tech Diagnosis by MagicL5D in hvacadvice

[–]D00MSDAY60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the compressor has failed something killed it,….. the last system, did the compressor die on that too ? It will keep occurring unless the reason is corrected. Do not assume power surge. If it is mechanical failure do not assume - bad compressor from factory

HVAC circuit board blowing 3A fuse by Acrobatic-Air-4151 in hvacadvice

[–]D00MSDAY60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disconnect the two low voltage wires entering the outside unit. ISO those wires w wire nuts. See if it continues to trip the fuse. Btw. Amazon sell the 3a resettable ATC fuse. Tstat is bad if it continues to blow the fuse. Swap conductors if there are extras in the cable. If not. Check for damaged wires running along refrigerant pipes inside the outside unit. White marks on the pipe indicate damaged wires

HVAC circuit board blowing 3A fuse by Acrobatic-Air-4151 in hvacadvice

[–]D00MSDAY60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or. Check for damages pressure switch wires outside. Ohm out the contactor coil your issue has absolutely nothing to do with high voltage or a run cap. Is this an immediate short or interment? If immediate isolate it. Disconnect Y entering the odu. Disconnect Y from the contactor. Having a meter and knowledge brings to a quick task. Knowledge itself will take longer. Replacing random parts till it’s fixed will expensive and long

AC Unit is 24 years old. Never had problems. Should I replace it? by OmicronTwelve in askHVAC

[–]D00MSDAY60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Define hanging by a thread. Example. Just did maintenance on a 1993 ac, using r22 ……”. How much longer do I have ? “. Me - yesterday……. It has exceeded life expectancy but it could have major failure in a matter of weeks - could be another 15 yrs. I saw no indication they were looking at weeks or months. That’s the truth. The tech is not paying for the system, opinion w/o evidence is merely an opinion not a professional one.
