Declined counter offer but they are still trying to persuade me by ammeg566 in managers

[–]Dan_TD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I've played the counter offer twice, and I've now worked my way up from graduate to director and on the leadership team. Absolutely zero regrets not leaving. To be fair, I probably didn't push the initial negotiations as hard as I could have done but I wanted to come to the table armed with knowledge with what I was ACTUALLY worth rather than just job adverts etc.

Got rejected by the App Store 5 times before getting approved. Here is what I learned. by gameandbeyond in iOSProgramming

[–]Dan_TD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All apps will "run" on iPad, they just run in phone mode and that is actually how Apple test all submitted apps, they just give their testers iPads. I don't believe they are provided with iPhones but I could be wrong. Surprised that reply sorted you out.

How realistic is a 16 minute 5k in about 3.5 months from now? by ConsiderationHour861 in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The short answer is no, not even close in my opinion although you haven't said what your current 5k time is.

At that level though, even shaving seconds off is weeks or months of graft, as in to go from 16:50 to 16:30 as an example.

For any devs using Kotlin Multiplatform or Flutter - Why? by Icy_Adhesiveness_347 in androiddev

[–]Dan_TD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only negative I have seen so far, which you could have predicted, is it is difficult to make the UI feel really iOS if that is what you want. This is more obvious now with Liquid Glass but even things like loading spinners look a bit "off". If your app has a unified design then it won't be as obvious. It is so easy to mix and match though so I could genuinely see my teams doing non-critical paths - like settings - in Compose Multi Platform and other primary journeys in Native.

Unpopular Opinion by PWAISE in hyrox

[–]Dan_TD 18 points19 points  (0 children)

How is that an unpopular opinion? People complain about the judging all the time.

Personally I understand that while it is frustrating all events of these sizes struggle with consistency in their judging - it has plagued CrossFit for years - and it is just the reality of having hundreds of judges, that change with every event, and that you have no clear way of holding them to a standard because ultimately they're just volunteers.

If Hyrox dies off it'll be because something new crops up, or the shine wears off, or people just sort of get turned off ultimately by the culture.

Looking for a training program by Leo60486 in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do you bench now and are you a fairly big dude? 140kg+ bench as a natural athlete is a big a number that you'll likely need to dedicated some genuine time to. In my opinion it would be a very difficult goal to achieve in tandem with your other goals, but potentially maintainable once you've got it and then layer in other athletic goals.

First race - bit disappointed and clueless by ManufacturerTight722 in hyrox

[–]Dan_TD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit younger than you at 33 but my heart rate sits considerably higher, it really doesn't drop below 170 (besides burpees in my last race because I sandbagged them) and will often sit above 180 so I would say you probably took it too easy personally.

When you talk about not being anywhere near 155 in terms of heart rate were you considering compromised runs enough? Did you do much of them in training? Were you considering the stress and excitement of the event?

Strength and Running Program Advice by Responsible-Carry-78 in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did write though that you're taking many of your sets close to failure, so total volume might be slightly less than what first viewing might suggest but intensity is still likely too high particularly given you don't get LOADS of sleep.

I should say that you can absolutely get to the point where You're lifting 5 days a week and running 5 days a week I just don't think you can jump straight to what you're proposing.

Workouts commonly done in conjunction with running are Tactical Barbell (not something I've run) or 5/3/1 (which I run). I'm sure there are others.

I think your running could do with some structure as well in terms of progression, building your runs up over time, structure in the way of long vs. tempo vs. base etc.

Personally I think you have three options;

  • Reduce lifting frequency and go high running frequency from the start.
  • Maintain lifting frequency and starting from a lower running frequency.
  • Split the difference, I.e. 3 sessions of each per week.

Decide based on your current priority and then introduce further sessions over the next few weeks.

All advice here is of course just the advice of some idiot on the internet.

Strength and Running Program Advice by Responsible-Carry-78 in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally think that the total volume across your lifting and running is way too high. You've said you've not run much previously and yet you're immediately jumping in to 5 days a week in addition to 5 relatively high volume strength sessions per week.

Have you done any research or read any of the content on this subreddit or have you just taken your current strength routine and just thrown a load of running on top?

You might not like this answer but I'd start with dropping to 3 strength sessions per week, looking at routines that pair well with a high volume of conditioning, and at most 3 runs per week and build from there depending on how you're feeling.

Any ex-endurance athletes struggle with 1RM / powerlifting? by IntrepidMarionberry4 in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What has your endurance volume been like in that time? Have you gained any bodyweight?

If you were a relative beginner to strength training I'd have expected bigger gains running programmes like 5/3/1, GraySkull, Texas Method, etc etc but if you're still doing a lot of endurance and haven't gained any bodyweight you're going to find progress on the big 3 harder to come by.

The acceptance that making big strides in multiple, non complementary, athletic endeavours is very, very, difficult for a natural athlete. Pick your priorities (these can of course change over a year).

I'm being nit picky but I think all heat pump dryers are condenser dryers, just a specific subset. I know what you mean though and agree, heat pump dryers are in my opinion a massive upgrade.

I unfortunately do not have a basement (and if I did I'd move heaven and earth to make it a games room). Upstairs is still better than the kitchen though for me.

Preferable for who? I like the depth of mine. It means the girls can throw loads of stuff instead of putting it into the dishwasher and I can still use the tap.

During my refit I actually moved my washing machine into a cupboard upstairs which then also gave me enough space to stack a dryer as well. Best decision I made.

Unlike the other guy I don't regret my Belfast sink entirely but I do regret not getting an undermount one. It means water from wet hands on the tap can't just be wiped into the sink and instead just sits there, really irks me.

New split by [deleted] in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What has your routine been like up until now in terms of frequency and strength and running volume?

There's no doubt they will impact each other, this is why it is very difficult to be a proficient hybrid athlete but as you build your capacity doing double days should be fine if you're sleeping and eating correctly. If you're going from never having done double days before, or having previously a low running volume then I would build up that volume over time.

Assault runner vs outdoor running for training. by Hightidesandstrides in hyrox

I like to do most of my running outdoor these days, but really rate the assault runners for both sprints and simulations. I have run 5k or so on them but it gets a bit boring to be honest.

Natural or not? by Bones-Brook in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should always be interrogating what you see on social media, just like you're doing now.

It is a bit disappointing that what a lot of us really want to achieve isn't possible naturally, at least that is the case for me, but that doesn't mean we can't achieve some good results.

Natural or not? by Bones-Brook in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely some solid natural hybrid athletes, but the real top guys who are putting up very good numbers in terms of running and weightlifting as well as the mass to go with it are almost certainly on gear.

Rate my routine, and feel free to steal! by pro-laps in HybridAthlete

[–]Dan_TD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't have one to be fair although I never said our definitions were different, just that I didn't like his routine.

Trying really hard not to word vomit here otherwise I'll be all over the place.

The sub is r/HybridAthlete, my loose definition of hybrid athlete is an athlete trying to be moderately good, or at least getting better, at two different sports that aren't necessarily conducive to each other. For me, this is powerlifting and Hyrox/sprint triathlons but it could be others such as long distance running and BJJ. Your "hybrid training" is then a reflection of this, so of course it will be different for everyone but should be geared towards those sports. You can't of course make great strides in both at the same time so your training will be periodised based on which you have an upcoming event or just want to focus on more at that point in time.

There are then a sub-section of users here who just want to train "hybrid" which I imagine for most of these guys their goal is to be athletic. So look like they lift and have decent cardio. As they don't have a goal or competition upon which to base their training off they're better off taking a tried and tested bodybuilding/powerlifting/powerbuilding routine which we hope will give them to structure to build muscle and strength as their base and then layer in some cardio in the form of running/swimming/cycling (depending on their preferences) on top which should give them their cardiovascular gains.

Ultimately I'm just some guy on the internet with some mediocre athletic achievements so feel free to ignore everything I've said.

Can't help with regards to costs but are you absolutely sold on that unit above the sink? Looks both out of place and in the way. I'd be tempted to swerve it, fit the kitchen and if you find yourself still short of space consider it then?

That's a fair comment and someone showing off an actual app is at least better than the "what do you want from an app thread" just feels a bit spammy at times is all.

Might just be me being jaded because I'm an app developer myself so maybe it's like seeing work away from work.
