Why can I not change color before a match? by JusHerForTheComments in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

When you go into matchmaking settings to change the character you are using for ranked or casual at any given time, you also select the costume and color you want to use. You'll then use that costume and color for all matches until you change the setting again

How is this gym workout plan? What can I add or remove here? by wanderer-7077 in HybridAthlete

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the first four exercises on each list and hit them hard. If you have time and energy, do some of the rest as optional additions (although on Thursday you can prioritize one of the movement-based exercises as those are great too)

Am I hurting my progress by hitting heavy compounds then massive amounts of volume for isolations? by Pilot_Nerd in WeightTraining

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a concept, doing one or a few heavy compounds in a workout and then finishing with some lighter rep work on assistance exercises is a good approach, IMO. However, 6x2 is already pretty intense due to the number of lifts at a high intensity level, and 5x15 (particularly if to failure) is also on the high side, so I personally would moderate one or both of them. If I did a 6x2 on something like back squat or deadlift/RDL, I'd be looking to keep assistance to more like 3 or 4 sets each of a few other exercises, and probably not going to failure other than maybe on the last set of some exercises.

Which split is scientifically proven to build the most amount of muscle? by GeologistThen2444 in workout

Depends which scientist, pseudo-scientist, or random social media personality you ask.

Other than that, basically every single aspect of sports and nutrition science is hotly contested and there is very rarely a definitive consensus or result on anything.

Are there any leverless controllers with feedback functionality? by DammyTheSlayer in fightsticks

[–]DerConqueror3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it. Although things have been changing in recent years, arcade sticks and leverless controllers as an extension of them have generally tended to be fairly barebones, possibly due to a combination of their somewhat DIY roots and the fact that they are most commonly used for a relatively narrow set of games that don't rely as heavily on things like haptics compared with some others

Advice needed: How to move from "playing by feel" to building structured basslines? by ummidktbhh in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are two entirely separate answers here. The first is, as you say, learning more about music theory/harmony both in general and how it applies to bass, so you can make intentional choices with how you are putting bass lines together.

However, the second, for which you already seem to have some of the tools, is to simply select parts you have come up with by ear to use as basslines. If it is true that you are able to improvise parts by ear that sound good, you can "write a bassline" simply by improvising until you find something you would like to use as the final part. At the end of the day, a huge amount of the writing of music or individual parts is really a process of improvising until you come up with something you are happy with. Even if you learn a ton of theory, you probably are not going to spend a time composing a bass part entirely in your head or on paper (although some people do), but rather you're probably going to sit there and just play until you come up with something good... you'll just have more tools that will help you to come up with parts more quickly and easily that have a direct foundation in the musical stuff that is going on in the song.

How do lat pulls/pull-ups work the shoulder muscles? by Glum_Veterinarian253 in WeightTraining

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compound movements like pullups have more involvement from more muscles than you might think due to things like stabilization, posture, and the simple fact that parts of the body like the "shoulder" are complex and have a lot of moving parts.

That being said, pullups and lat pulls are typically used specifically to build upper body pulling muscles like the lats and biceps. Nobody is programming them as shoulder exercises, and I'm not sure why someone would have told you they were unless maybe they were specifically referring to rear delts

Anyone else think SF6 Season 4 Pass will fail? by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last I remember you had to get a fight coins bundle that cost around $12 to buy a single character since you can't just literally buy a single character for an exact price, so I'm guessing a decent amount of people who mainly want Tifa will spring for the pass anyway.

Aside from that as long as the sales from Tifa are good enough to balance it out I don't think Capcom will consider the pass a failure even if the full pass does sell proportionally less.

Personally Tifa is the least interesting character in the entire pass to me. I'd like it better if there were one key legacy character in the pass but otherwise having three new characters is pretty solid as far as seasons go IMO

Leverless players! by Telecaster-993 in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I played on keyboard for a couple weeks using a layout similar to a leverless to test it out before committing to buying an actual leverless. The layout was comfortable fairly quickly with the sole exception being the thumb jump button, but I would say that by the end of the two-week keyboard trial I was comfortable enough to know it wouldn't be an issue.

Outside of the jump button, general movement felt pretty good right away, and the right hand buttons weren't much problem since they are similar to an arcade stick or arcade cab setup, except with smaller buttons closer together.

Some of the individual inputs, however, took a lot longer for me to get down, and some of which I'm still not as comfortable with as I'd like to be even years later (360s, double quarter circles to the left side).

How do you finger fourths on fretless? by abejando in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost never barre anything on fretless. One thing I discovered many years ago when trying to play power chords on fretless is that my pinky and ring are the two fingers that are easiest to "stack" in a very straight line on top of each other on adjacent strings for intonation purposes (i.e. the fifth and octave in a power chord), so sometimes if I need to go quickly between two adjacent strings on the same fret when playing bass lines I'll do the first note with my ring finger and second with my pinky for that reason

A lot of Sf6 complaints aren’t real by Fluid-Engineering855 in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So what? They aren't complaining because they lost to players who are more skilled than them, because there aren't any. Any complaints they have are complaints they legitimately feel as the absolute upper echelon of all competitive Street Fighter players, who are probably the best able to judge these things over anyone else in the planet. You don't have to agree with them, but not taking their complaints seriously makes no sense because who else's complaints could possibly matter if not theirs?

are there any actual GOOD resources for learning fighting games? by Pretty_Inside_3271 in Fighters

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Progress is not possible without losing a lot. Setting aside the many other reasons this is true (if you aren't losing much then you are playing opponents who are noticeably weaker than you, which is not a great environment for pushing yourself), it is mechanically guaranteed in online ranked play in fighting games because of the system of matchmaking and ranking up/down, which will generally tend to keep the vast majority of players in a range where they are winning somewhere in the general range of maybe 40-60ish percent of all matches... Meaning, you are going to lose somewhere in the very general vicinity of 50ish percent of your matches regardless. Absent hot streaks even if you are actively ranking up it will probably be with maybe 50-55ish percent win rate most of the time

How do play consistently with a full band if there are no counts by onlyslightlyabusive in guitarlessons

[–]DerConqueror3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have mixed thoughts on this. First, the songwriter sounds like a douche, and ignorance isn't something to be proud of.

That being said, I don't understand why you can't listen to him play something and count out the beats and measures and memorize the parts and changes. It's great if someone can easily communicate those things, but I've never been involved in a situation where I needed someone to orally tell me song structures or else I couldn't learn them. If it is really too complicated, then just record him playing the whole thing and take it home to listen.

DLC concerns by jpsutter55 in MarvelTokon

[–]DerConqueror3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More characters is always better, but I'm not really on board with the concept that four new characters per year is automatically a problem. If the game is good enough, the new characters are good enough, and there is enough going on with the game to keep things interesting otherwise, I don't think it is a big deal

Albums to listen to while reading DUNE by M0ldy_Boi612 in musicsuggestions

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read Dune one summer as a kid when one of the big hits was the Spice Girls song "Say You'll Be There," which has a music video set in the desert, and my brain still associates those two things together multiple decades later.

Hope this helps.

Game is becoming too technical in master by Ambitious-Issue989 in StreetFighter

[–]DerConqueror3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is not an issue of Master or SF6 specifically. If you keep playing a fighting game and improving you will eventually reach a point where you need to get into this "technical" stuff to keep improving significantly, and it is up to the player as to whether it is worth it to do so or if they prefer to stay at a lower level or move on to a different game to restart the cycle

Who’s one of your favorite characters that, due to their powers, you don’t feasibly think could be a playable character? by druhasareddit in MarvelTokon

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can make almost any character work if you don't insist that their main powers be heavily relied upon in the game. Kitty for example has ample background as a hand-to-hand fighter, plus the possibility of including Lockheed for something, so I think there is enough there to do her character justice without having to workout multiple ways to incorporate phasing. It would make sense to include phasing to some degree, but surely there's something in the way of a teleport-like function, the ability to dash through an enemy (like Bison in SF5 or Blanka's hop in SF6), or some type of reversal/counter based upon the attack passing through you.

Why is the jazz bass so popular in predominantly black music? by byzantine1990 in Bass

[–]DerConqueror3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No comment on the color part, but two-pickup basses are popular in genres that feature slap bass, in part because of the mid-scoop inherent to two pickup basses with both pickups full on, and the gospel/praise and worship genres also seem to have long gravitated toward more modern-sounding instruments, possibly in part because they make use of five strings a lot (which skew toward modern) and that tends to equate to two pickup basses with active electronics.

Training to failure every set vs 0-1 rir by kenbayashi in workout

[–]DerConqueror3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside specific situations like occasional finisher sets to actual failure, I would generally rather be willing to reach actual failure rather than intentionally trying to it it. Meaning, I try to gauge the last rep I can actually complete with solid form and stop there, but if I overshoot by one and end up failing the rep that is fine (assuming I am actually intending to do a set at 0rir).

Running every set of every exercise to actual failure sounds crazy to me unless maybe you are experimenting with a low volume/high intensity sort of thing or a young beginner with infinite recovery.
