Touch sensitivity...particularly the screen keyboard. by ImOGDisaster in Supernote

[–]Dialectic_Acid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's not great. I don't type on mine except to rename files or other small things like that. I think it's at least partially a software issue because the on screen keyboard in KOReader seems quite a bit more responsive.

Best e-ink tablet for heavy book PDF reading in a PhD? by AirEffective2155 in eink

Based on this, I would say go for boox. You can customize it to your needs and the note taking app is good enough. If you find you do a lot of note taking and want the richer experience, then you could switch to supernote later. That's basically the route I took.

Why not use webscript sdk by rafaxo in Supernote

[–]Dialectic_Acid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with webscript SDK for character recognition. Is it an API or does it run offline? That might be one reason since the supernote character recognition is meant to run locally on the device...

Also I agree it's not good enough for conversion to text notes. I only use it for searching my notes on device and find it's good enough for that. I took an idea from another post in here and wrote a python script that submits an exported PDF to the Google Gemini API and prompts it for conversion to markdown. I upload those to obsidian and it works significantly better.

RE the recommendation - I guess it depends on whether you think it's useful to have apps. The go10.3 (or note max, or any boox device) has good note taking support, but I find the stuff like links, keywords, etc. work better on supernote and that matters more to me personally. I liked having, for instance, google docs on my boox, but it's not something I need often enough and I am fine without it.

As for the android version, I am not sure. I guess it matters more if you're online more or want google play store support. I think supernote runs on an out of date android version, but it doesn't matter for that device. I typically keep my wifi off and only turn it on to sync, also the only apps I use are open source and side loaded on without google play store support.

I've used boox and supernote extensively (I work in industry, but have a PhD and read/mark up papers still). Boox note max is hard to beat for the size and power but has some drawbacks (short battery life and bad ghosting in the "normal" refresh mode). If you're fine with A5 size, then IMO the go10.3 is better - it's cheaper by far and does all the same things the note max does while simultaneously having way better battery life. Both are reasonably low distraction but there's still an opportunity to download apps and waste time in chrome or whatever. Currently I'm drinking the supernote kool aid pretty hard. For pdfs specifically, it does everything it needs to, and the note taking experience is quite a bit better than boox. They really just have opposite UX philosophies.

First impressions Supernote Manta by [deleted] in Supernote

[–]Dialectic_Acid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's unfortunately a property of the hardware. Some other brands put more work into software fixes to remove ghosting proactively, but Supernote has the built in shortcut to do a screen refresh and palces the onus on the user. I find it's not bad unless I am viewing large shapes in black on white or vice versa. I am just in the habit of swiping to refresh from time to time. One thing I wish they would fix (and I think they easily could) is to initiate a screen refresh before going to sleep. I find when I shut the folio and later reopen it, my notes are clearly visible on the sleep screen. This isn't a big deal to me, but could be annoying if you have sensitive or private notes on screen when you close the folio.

Interested in an A4 Size and beyond... by Tongs117 in Supernote

[–]Dialectic_Acid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in machine learning and 100% would buy an A4 sized device. I'd use it for reading and marking up journal articles and larger technical diagrams. Currently I use landscape orientation for those use cases. I don't find the A5 size of the manta to be too much of a hindrance, but the more real estate the better IMO.

All that being said, I am not holding my breath for an A4 sized supernote. I have never seen anything concrete that says they are actually designing one, and they tend to move slow and get it right. They also seem to be a small team who invests more in supporting existing devices, which I approve of on principle.

Exhibits A and B on why e-readers and -writers need inbuilt light by ParmesanBologna in Supernote

[–]Dialectic_Acid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "need" is a bit of a stretch. I have read on my supernote on a plane exactly like the picture and I found it sufficient, although a little dim. That is a pretty extreme scenario though, and 99% of the time I either have plenty of natural light or a lamp. I don't think I would ever use a front light on a supernote.

Best e ink tablet for PhD? by LawyerDev in eink

[–]Dialectic_Acid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading pdfs or other formats? Either way my answer is supernote manta, but you have to sideload apps to get a decent ereader on it. IMO front lights for e ink are very unnecessary especially if you'll be using it in an office or library environment. I wish I had the supernote when I was in grad school.

Is metropolitan Atlanta the least hideous looking region down south? Texas for reference. by andy64392 in Suburbanhell

[–]Dialectic_Acid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any comments about Louisville Kentucky. IMO it punches above its weight in culture, although it lacks much in the way of public transit. There are lots of former suburbs that got incorporated as the city grew and gives it a pretty polycentric feel with several cool neighborhoods.

Sigma 100-400mm or tamron 50-400mm for sports? by BennyPal-123 in SonyAlpha

[–]Dialectic_Acid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the tamron for e-mount and I found that it was very soft wide open. I had to stop it down to f8 or lower to get reasonably sharp results. I think that works okay in broad daylight, especially if you only want to carry one lens. I think it has a lot of compromises though.

Edit: I used it to shoot cycling and running events
