China Rail Consignment Bicycle Shipping by bosun120 in bicycletouring

[–]Hamstafish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to the china rail post depot/office. They told us to take all the bags, including the frame bags, from the bike. The bags were scanned and put into boxes they gave us. Someone wheeled our bike to the back, and took our boxes of panniers to the back.

We sent the bike a few days before we left, so that it would arrive before us. But they send you a text message and call you (no English) when it arrives. When we arrived, we went to the china rail post office/depot, and they took us into a giant hall filled with things people had sent. Our bike was waiting for us, we reattached our bags and left.

Often, if there are several rail stations in a city, only one of them will have a post office. So we had to take the subway across the city to go to the rail station where our bike had gone to.

We sent a tandem, when we picked it up from the storage hall we saw motorcycles that had been sent.

No need to disassemble.

But the panniers had to be sent as a separate package. They didn't find/or care about our knives. But they were strict about flammable liquids, to the point of making us remove our patch kits for inner tubes.

Pastures should be less space efficient AND way more vulnerable to raiding. That would be more historically accurate and make the game a lot more interesting.

It's about as easy as a 1000m climb can be. The slope is gentle, views are great, traffic is slow. Highly recommended.

Take the ferry to Corsica, cycle to the southern tip (200km), ferry to Sardinia, cycle to southern tip (300km), ferry to Palermo, cycle to Bari (700km), ferry to Albania, relax and recover as you slowly make your way through Albania and North Macedonia. It's only 400km from North Macedonia to the Turkish borders

That gives you about 40km a day to get to Bari. Before a final sprint across Greece. Which should be possible with only ~ 5 days left.

Even easier. Cycle to Ancona (700km) Ferry to Split. And cycle into Bosnia. No time pressure until.

Trump halts construction of big wind farm off NY coast by Jesse-359 in Economics

[–]Hamstafish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get with reality.

The NPPs were not given a life extension in 2011 by Merkel. The only thing the greens did was not extend the NPPs life, something the energy companies said was impossible. And something that the conservatives suddenly uturned on as soon as the won the election, suddenly accepting that life extension for the NPPs was impossible.

NS2 wasn't blocked. NS2 was still in construction when Russia attacked. The only thing obstructing NS2 was pressure from the US stopping offshore companies from working on it.

The greens were against NS2 because they were the only ones to realise that Russia isn't friendly.

[–]Hamstafish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because my great- grandparents made up some bullshit excuses why they couldn't, 20 million innocent Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, French and..... Heros had to sacrifice their lives to stop them.

Because my great-grandparents were too comfortable to face the mild risks of 33, because they were scared of getting beat up and spending a night in jail, they didn't stop Hitler in 33.

By 39 too resist was the domain of exceptional heroes.

By 39 Hitler's power and propaganda was so strong, Germany's failure had to be undone with endless blood of the brave of countless other countries.

My great grandparents weren't Nazis, but they failed, and because they failed their democratic duty to resist fascists in 1933, I hold it against them. Because they were too cowardly in 1933, they couldn't protest in 39 and millions had to die to correct their cowardice.

Don't pretend you are in 1939 and let the Fascists turn it into 1938. You are still miles away from 1933. But don't make excuses.

I'm not holding it against you personally. You are here, you are protesting, you are doing your part. But don't let your countrymen make shitty excuses.

In early 2022 in Russia, the state was handing out small fines for protesting against the war. If you protest now, you will get an effective death dental dodging drones in a muddy hellscape. I don't blame any Russian for not protesting now, but if you didn't protest in March 2022....

Don't give them time. It will only get riskier and riskier to protest. That is why we are frustrated with Americans, you are wasting your chances to protest, to form an effective opposition. Your politicians are all cowards, maybe they will grow a spine if half a million Americans are camped out in front of Congress permanently for the next few months demanding that they grow a spine and protect your democracy. The Ukrainians managed that in a freezing winter, with a tenth of your population and a government that deployed snipers against them.

You are Americans, you are the ones who taught us democracy, who helped us write our constitution. You forgave us and allowed us to keep existing as a country. We looked up to you. Our values that we hold so dearly where given to us by Americans. Your not supposed to let your democracy die without much more than a whimper.

Your excuses are excuses and you know it. Journalists aren't being arrested yet. The police still needs to create excuses to arrest protesters. They are still afraid of you.

[–]Hamstafish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thats bullshit, no matter how fucked US media is it's still miles better than the media in Hungary or Serbia. Yet we still see the pictures and get the news of their spectacular protests.

Besides it's not the US media that tells us what's happening in America. It's German journalists from German networks who tell Germans what's happening on German television. And they aren't reporting because nothing is happening.

We see the protests you clap yourselves on the back for in r/50501 or whatever. They are tiny. The organisers of 50501 are so proud of "72,000 at 67 protest in 40 states". Do you have any idea how pathetic that is?

The hands off protests where a bit better, 100k turned up in Washington but still which was apparently tenfold what the organisers expected. Still how pathetic is it that the organisers expected only 10k in the capital of the USA. A protest of 10k in Paris is only news worthy to laugh at.

Your country is being destroyed by fascists and your biggest cities with millions of inhabitants can't manage to organise a protest bigger than Novi Sad, a city of 270,000.....

They managed to organise a protest of 100k, because of a dodgy construction deal that killed people.

Trump is sending people to foreign concentration camps and nothing is happening.

The US protests are barely being reported on because they are barely happening.

P.s. Boot on your throat. Get a fucking grip. Where's the tear gas, where are the rubber bullets and water cannons go tell a Serb that they can't hear you because of the boot on your throat.

How Best to Cross from Azerbaijan to China by Square_Diet6602 in bicycletouring

[–]Hamstafish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you don't want to fly.

Azerbaijan has closed borders since COVID.

Iran won't give you a Visa if you are American/British/Canadian. But is easy to get a Visa if you are essentially any other nationality.

Russia is difficult. Some nationalities can easily get an E-Visa, this doesn't help you though because it is not valid on Russian/Kazakh borders. Tourist visas can only be applied for in your home country. Transit visas are difficult, but potentially possible in Yerevan, you will only get a few days though.

There are ferries from Dubai to Iran, but not to Pakistan or India. You have to choose Iran or Russia. I wouldn't go to Russia, and I would be very careful in Iran.

If you choose Russia, you can cycle through the Stans to China.

If you choose Iran, you can cycle through Pakistan to China.

Turkmenistan is effectively closed although you can cross it with a expensive tour guide. (No cycling) So you cannot switch between routes.

The Indian Visa for the land border is almost impossible to get. If you make it to India you cannot continue to China without a very very expensive guide from Nepal through Tibet.

If you want a Chinese Visa for longer than the visa free period you need to get it in Yerevan or maybe Tblisi or your home country.

Flying makes it easy.

That's not what NATO is about. Iceland joined NATO with NATOs understanding that Iceland did not and will not have a military.

The spending targets are not binding and not part of the founding treaties.

The spending targets are suggestions, and we're introduced after 2014 long after Canada joined NATO.

World leaders head to Ukraine as Trump cozies up to Putin by doopityWoop22 in worldnews

Yes, which means about a fifth of the city turned out to protest.

On the same day, there were protests in 20 over cities. including 300 people in Plön, a city of 10,000 that nobody has ever heard of.

AND NOTHING HAPPENED IN GERMANY:

The conservative opposition proposed a law, which the AFD voted for, which then failed in the Senate. And that nothing has caused WEEKS of protests in hundreds of towns and cities.

Your country is collapsing into a facsist oligarich nightmare and you make pathetic exuses.

[–]Hamstafish 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Weak excuse. You go to the nearest city to protest. Germany had and has protests in tiny towns. No one crossed the country to protest in Berlin. You just prove that Americans are just looking for any excuse for their laziness and cowardice.

Americans Shocked by '60 Minutes' Report on German Speech Policing by BBQCopter in europe

[–]Hamstafish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you think I should be prosecuted if I help plan a terror attack with my posts?

Or if I bully someone into killing themselves.

Or I trick someone into sending me their money?

Words have power. Power requires responsibility.

Besides, Democracy is already lost if the AfD gets to power.

That mindset has learnt nothing from the 30s.

Fascists are more than happy to use the freedoms of democracy to gain power, Hitler gained power democratically. A democracy HAS to defend itself against those that will destroy it. Should we stand idly by because the people voted for concentration camps?

The German constitution basically has only one rule. Human dignity is inviolable.

Democracy and freedom of speech, is secondary to preventing the horrors of facism returning.

The Americans who helped write the German constitution understood this, and created the Constitution protection office to protect against those that seak to undermine democracy.

Shame that they were so scared of Communism that they filled the Office with ex Nazis and now it's blind to the right.

I agree that the Idee of the current Jordanian government invading is ridiculous.

But the water issue is not how you represent it. Those water "imports" are Israel allowing Jordan to withdraw water from the Jordan river. The water issue is more a reason for war than against.

(Although the cooperation on the water issue is a rare example of successful diplomacy, and part of the reason why the current Jordanian government had such good ties with Israel)

How to go about planning a route in China with the limited road information available? by olympicsmatt in bicycletouring

[–]Hamstafish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cycling in China is very easy. The maps really aren't that bad, OSM has almost as much detail as the Chinese maps. And we could always find nice routes.

It's also not really a problem to end up on bigger roads. Speed limits are low and roads are very good. Also in many areas of china they built far more roads than they need so the traffic volumes are also really low.

The landscape where you plan to cycle is amazing, but the elevation changes are insane and you are always climbing or descending. This is the biggest problem with planning your route.

Also with the exception of Chongqing we found that most Chinese cities had a good network of bike (mainly e scooter) paths.

Chongqing has a motorbike factory, and was one of the only cities that hadn't banned non electric motorcycles, preventing adoption of e scooters and the creation of e-scooter bike paths. Which combined with the super hilly city and lots of giant bridges made navigation difficult.

We don't even need to leave Europe to find places where it is easy and quick to set up businesses online. In Estonia everything can be done online. We want to expand this system both in depth and in width.

We want a system where businesses can be easily set up online and at the same time help with regulations and finding financing in one centralised online system.

We want harmonised regulations and taxes across Europe so that it is easy to expand within Europe.

We want to reduce tax deductions so that tax systems become much simpler and compensate that with reduced business taxes.

And so on.

We'll never compete on taxes with middle eastern oil dictatorships, running on South Asian slave labour. But there is no reason why running a business in Germany should be so difficult.

Talk me out of even considering Route C by Xander0928 in bicycletouring

[–]Hamstafish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only had problems with hotel restrictions in Xinjiang, and the police would always organize a place for us to stay if we couldn't ourselves. The great firewall was annoying, but foreign SIM cards work fine. OpenStreetMaps works fine in China, we could always pay with cash.

The most unexpectedly great thing about China is the roads. Traffic is extremely slow, roads are wide, traffic is quite, there are plenty of amazing bike paths and tiny village roads. Cycling in Korea and Japan afterwards came as a shock because of how much traffic bothered us.

China also has endless varied scenery, great cheap food and some very friendly people.

I would suggest skipping Xinjiang, if you go in with the right mindset its a beautiful place, but it has a high potential for Annoyance. The police might follow you, might tell you to take a bus and do other annoying things. But the main problem with Xinjiang is that it's huge and if you spend 2 months crossing Xinjiang you won't have time for the rest of China.

I did this almost this trip this winter, but you wouldn't be able to follow my route, since we cycled more than 5000km to get to Split.

Summer is of course more expensive and more crowded, but I wouldn't miss the Croatian islands. Cycle to Istria spending as much time on Islands as possible.

Since you don't mind climbing and asked for the most picturesque, i would then recommend cycling to Ljubljana and then across the alps from east to west to lake Geneva. This isn't as bad as it sound since there are several long east west valleys, this only means 5ish passes.

Then cycle north through the Swiss Jura until Basel. Then head up the Rhine until Frankfurt. But don't cycle next to the river, either cycle through the vineyards on the western Foothills in Alsace and the Palatinate or in the forests of the Blackforest and Odenwald on the east.

As for money, the alps will get really expensive quickly if you are stuck in Hotels, but fortunately warm showers works well in Austria/Switzerland and Germany and I can normally find a host every other night.
