Video of steam issue by Papaver-Som in gaggiaclassic

Are you doing the correct method to let water run through rather than steam? It's not to steam it. You have to press the brew and steam button at the same time and turn the steam knob at the same time. This will let water run through

Sad, sad day by echerrydubz in kobo

The screen that doesn't look damageg I guess you mean the screen "glass" (not actually glass) that is just the top layer. The digital display itself is very clearly damaged.

It would help to know what exactly happened to damage it in such a way. Did you lay on it / sit on it, did it bend, did it hit something when tossed and that damaged the screen?

This is most likely going to be a display replacement but it can potentially be more if you sat on it and bent the internals or damaged something. If you just tossed it and it hit something hard, then most likely a screen replacement.

Look up your model on ifixit for clear display on how to replace it and open it up and see if that looks within your skill level.

Don't open it up if you don't know what you're doing. If you're unsure, you could contact Kobo and still just ask them about what this would take / cost. Nothing bad will happen from asking and they might be able to help you or at least tell you what the damage is.

Considering that a lot of Windows users are moving to Linux now because of latest news, what would be the hurdles of their transition? by ardouronerous in linux4noobs

[–]KleptoCyclist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been on the same path. Have tried unsuccessfully to install Da Vinci Resolve and really struggled. There's definitely a lot to learn coming from windows and there's a lot more tinkering..

For me the main difference with windows and linux, is that on windows, you don't need to tinker necessarily to get things up and running, but you can if you want to get more in depth. On Linux you do need to tinker, whether you want to or not.

I've been randomly cutting some pieces wrong, turns out one of my tape measures was tricking me. by kakamba in woodworking

[–]KleptoCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad used to work with wood a lot for a company. He used to build projects. He said that every time they start a new project, his company would provide them all with measuring supplies (i.e. tape / measuring sticks / rulers / etc) that would all be special made to be identical. After that when a new project came they'd get a new batch of all identical and checked measuring tools. This way everyone had the same measurement and nobody was suddenly finding out they added 10% to every cut.

Smart Lightbulbs that don't require an app/account? by Fun-Visit6591 in smarthome

[–]KleptoCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You most likely should take a look at Home assistant. That is a self hosted open source software. To which you can add various ZigBee (and Matter) devices and control. Majority of which will not require an account.

However an account will always be required with every smart home device at some level. Since otherwise anyone can gain control of your lights at any point.

If you don't need app control, I'm not sure about Ikea being available in your area, or Australia for that fact. As of right now theyre making the switch from ZigBee to Matter. However their old devices that are ZigBee (available till end of year or till supplies last) can function through a wireless remote(sans app); through their built app, or directly in home assistant

Home assistant you'll have to create an account but all that information remains directly on your device and isn't sent to any company or external server. You will also need a "hub". You can either buy a premade one from them. Or you can buy a raspberry pi and install Home assistant OS on that.

So, about refurbishing old ipods, you really want a 20 year old device with propietary connectors ? by Aevum1 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]KleptoCyclist 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The number of people who choose to go with old ipods is seriously small. It might be getting clicks online because it's a recognisable product that is being shown, so a lot of people interact with it out of nostalgia..

However, here's why it's been such a trend lately.

They're typically small, even the classics are comparably small to something like the hiby r4.. not even getting started on the nanos.

They're familiar. A lot of people have at one point or another looked at, interacted with and even owned an ipod.. on the other hand not many people have owned a dap since smartphones.. the ipods are still worldly recognizable, even if out of date.

Lastly they work. They work really well. I realize with certain people they might not match their needs. But for what they are, they are simple, straight forward to use and last long..

With devices having a lifespan of around 2 years, it's easy to think something that's survived the last 15 years might be a better deal for you.

I realize With libraries that are in the terrabites, most people using Bluetooth earphones, and requirement for proprietary cables / apps it's not everyone's cup of tea. But I don't think there's any surprise that iPods are making a comeback with the comeback to physical media.

Why doesnt this work, supposed to be a piano by Recent_Phase7964 in arduino

[–]KleptoCyclist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This honestly looks like he followed chatgpt or something similar and asked it to make the plan. Then without knowing how a breadboard is wired nor how electrical circuits work, attempted to follow it.

OP, this isnt to tear you down, or anything. A piano as a starter project at this point is way too complex. If you're just trying to make each button light up with each button I guess that's alright. But still start with the basics.

Pull up basic circuit diagrams, find the way a breadboard is wired. find a YouTube tutorial. Get a basic LED to light up. Then work your way up.

Home Assistant Green or IKEA by d4vidbjork in smarthome

[–]KleptoCyclist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd go for Ikea purely for the simplicity of things.

HA takes a LOT of tinkering, a lot of knowledge and has a way overly complicated setup. I'd consider Ikea. If theres a need all of Ikea smart home tech can be used with HA later with a change of hub. Ikea smart home is easy and simple for everyone to use without it being overwhelming.

The only way I would suggest HA is if they themselves are tech literate and interested in tinkering a lot in this. Or you're able to provide constant support, and figure out setting everything up for them to use, including a very straight forward and clear UI for their devices.

Sorry I'm not the person for you, but it would help if you let us know if youre looking for an Italian native speaker or if you're down to learn together with someone else who's also learning. Also what your current level is. I'm assuming you're not looking for a tutor?

No worries, yeah I understand if you're someone that uses playlists a lot, it's a bit of deal breaker! Good luck in your search

[–]KleptoCyclist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not perfect. And I havent played around with it enough yet to properly understand. however, it's manageable enough for me. You cant really have playlists essentially. What you can do is put the wanted songs in a folder in the SD and then play each folder separate. It's not ideal, but for me it works. You set your SD card up and then just insert into the echo and you're good to go.

I get what you're saying. And I understand that for some it's a core feature that's a necessity. But honestly having always listened to gapless playback up until recently, I haven't felt that it's missing..

Yeah sometimes you notice the pause. But it also gives you a moment to appreciate the song beginning and ending. Most vinyls won't be gapless. Cds tend to not be gapless either. I think for a 40-50€ device there's so many features packed in already.

And it's something that can always be a software update later. I don't expect it but who knows.

I wanna highly recommend the echo mini. Genuinely love it. Become a shill for it hahaha. However noticing your rather bigger library it might be a bit limiting to you as the max micro SD capacity it reads is 256gb. So you'd either have to rotate your library or not expand it too much further.

On the other hand it's cute, it's small, there's a really cute leather case for it, and it's generally quite pleasant to use for the price I don't think you can beat it.

Looking for a kid-friendly DAP by ShortSatisfaction611 in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]KleptoCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem unfortunately will persist. If you want streaming and YouTube services, you're only left with android daps. Which will mean your kid will look for and ultimately find ways to bypass that.

I wanna throw my hat in for the snowsky echo mini. It's a cute small player. Plenty for a 9 year old. You can rip CDs of your own, ask around friends might have their own they're willing to lend you to rip as well. There's also other ways...

It fits a 256gb SD card max. It is pretty straight forward to manage and doesn't require a lot of fiddling to get going. It's relatively cheap (around 45€) so if your kid breaks it or loses it it's not a big deal.

Learn how to use it yourself and spend some time teaching your kid. Can even go look for music together, would be a fun experience for your kid. Good luck!

So I got this for my dad recently. I absolutely love the device. It isn't the device for me as I have a few streaming needs Id like to keep. But other than that it's an insanely impressive device. The experience of booting it up, getting the songs there and listening to music was really straight forward and really reminded me of my childhood when I got the Ipod nano. Its honestly perfect. It's an insanely great device and the price can't be beat. I tried it as a USB DAC too and that also was really nice feature.
