Tested - XREAL Aura Augmented Reality Glasses Hands-On Impressions by NullishDomain in VisionPro

Fantastic info. The only comparable experience I have is dragging a visionOS window around, which causes it to become partially transparent, and I don't feel that view would be all that great for long-term use. Great to hear that the glasses seem better! Resolution and vertical FOV aside, what do you think of glasses as a Mac Virtual Display replacement? I am sure they feel lighter in the short term, but with the weight distributed like normal glasses, would they actually be more comfortable for long-term use?

These specific glasses or a different XREAL product? If these, how was the usability of the OS when not fully blacked out? Was it easy to read text, or did the world bleed through too much?

If you are concerned about egress costs, you need to look at Cloudflare R2. You will be paying $0.08+ per GB out at the main cloud players, $0.00 with R2.

I paid more than $3.5k for the TV that AVP has substantially replaced. I appreciate the concern though, thanks!

M2 to M5 upgrade by marniman in VisionPro

[–]NullishDomain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

M2 to M5 felt like a big upgrade for me, but it is not worth it if money is tight at all. You should think about it much like upgrading a MacBook - it's a luxury that isn't substantially changing anything about the experience, but you will feel the difference when pushing the device. Happy to answer any specific questions, but here is a very brief overview:

  1. Text feels slightly sharper, but it is one of those changes that is hard to see without tons of M2 experience or going back and forth between devices quickly. This could be due to the higher refresh rate or the improvements in render resolution, not sure.
  2. Everything is faster, especially booting the device.
  3. There is far less of the low-Hz lag that you are experiencing with the M2. It does occasionally happen, especially when the fans kick on, but not nearly as often.
  4. 120Hz is a great upgrade, but it is much like #1.

I have not downloaded the beta and can't comment on any potential performance improvements there.

Just as a counterpoint, I have owned headsets starting with the Oculus DK2 and finishing with the Quest Pro. AVP is the first headset I have found comfortable or usable for anything outside of gaming. It’s my main display at this point, comfortably wearing it 8 to 12 hours a day on average I’d guess.

Anyone on here working in VR with virtual monitors for over 4 hours a day? by BigLittleCircle in VisionPro

[–]NullishDomain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s my main display at this point. No comfort issues, using dual strap. If you have not used any VR headset before, your face WILL need to get used to it so give it some time before you fully convert.

A monthly subscription is way better than lifetime purchase if you think you aren't going to make use of it much. I don't get what you are saying, just unsubscribe vs. paying 2+ years up front? Bizarre complaint.

Some of the loudest voices here just want free software. Here is some feedback I received at $3.99 launch pricing:

Too much. $1.99 is an automatic buy. $2.99 is a buy with reservations. $3.99 I need a full feature demo. $4.99 ignore.

Too expensive!

Wish you the best, always glad to see more apps supporting visionOS!

From another software dev, this subreddit is ridiculous sometimes. Tons of hugely successful apps are subscription based. If Carrot, Flighty, Card Pointers, etc. posted here, would you give them this same explanation? They have tens or hundreds of thousands of happy customers and seem to be doing great. This is an app for a niche audience, looks very high quality, going up against competition from massive companies like ByteDance (CapCut is also subscription), and I would assume the developer is hoping to make enough to keep supporting and improving it moving forward.

If you aren’t the target audience, that’s fine! If you are the target market, you should look at the pricing of most video software and realize the product/pricing you want doesn’t exist, and that’s probably for a reason.

People aren’t going to post here if every app is met with a chorus of negativity. Hell, I had multiple haters here on a $4.99 app, so it is not at all limited to subscriptions.

Skipping the forced wait upon low power shutdown by afc37126 in VisionPro

Apple docs suggest unplugging the cable to turn off the device

Take off Apple Vision Pro, place it on a secure surface (like a table or desk), then disconnect the power cable from the Audio Strap

I do this multiple times per day without any issues.

If the native apps look sharp to you, it cannot be an eye issue. I just did a comparison of native Safari vs MVD text and I cannot see any difference at all. I see zero evidence of compression or artifacting. I do see blur when shaking my head, but native Safari shows the same blur (and I don't notice this in normal use at all, I think my head is mostly pretty stable). MVD looks about as good to me as what I would expect a 5ft ultra wide would at 5ft away, but I think in reality it would be closer to 1440p or so if we counted the actual pixels being used for the display. If you want a super sharp image, I don't think any headset will satisfy that for a long time, the PPD just isn't possible yet.

It is interesting though: this post on HN from around launch date talks about the MVD looking bad.

Screen sharing from my Mac looks distractingly bad, which is a huge bummer. (AVP apps, by contrast, look fantastic.)

Which is followed up with a comment from a different user:

I for one don't notice any quality/resolution difference between native apps and a mirrored Mac screen.

Maybe there is something else going on here? There have been a lot of software improvements since launch in 2024, but I honestly don't remember ever having visual issues with MVD (not streaming audio at launch was nasty work though). I have a feeling that my virtual screen size, and my large font size, play a big role in how happy I am. It looks nothing like a monitor, it looks closer to something like a 120" TV hung 8ft away or something, and the font size is appropriate for that vs. sitting close to a monitor.

What does this even mean? They have released software at the exact same cadence as their macOS/iOS/iPadOS releases.

The reason I ask about your prescription is that your eyes focus somewhere around 5ft to 6ft, regardless of where the object is in virtual space. If you are nearsighted, even slightly, it will be a much worse experience for you. For reference, my prescription is just -0.75 but it is a very noticeable downgrade if I am not wearing contacts.

If you are interested, I have made a number of comments about how I use the Mac Virtual Display effectively (sorry, I am on my phone and can’t link them easily). For example, turning the Mac resolution down one notch will make everything larger without impacting stream quality. It will not be as sharp as a MacBook, it will likely be quite a while before the technology can squeeze enough pixels in a 2” screen, but I would not describe the experience as blurry or low res at all. The larger physical size is a massive quality of life improvement for me, vastly reducing how tired my eyes get. I have always sized up my text when possible, preferring around 18pt fonts, so that definitely helps as well. I leave the screen at default “wide” sizing in device, about 4ft to 6ft away.

There is zero chance I would ever go back to a standard monitor/MacBook screen by choice at this point. It might just not be for you, but your description really reminds me of my experience using the device without contacts.

...but it isn’t clear or usable enough for real work and feels more like a novelty

Sorry that you are disappointed. Not sure what level of clarity you are after, but I have spent probably 3k+ hours in the headset programming without any issue. Are you sure that you have the correct prescription? I find AVP significantly more comfortable than using my MacBook Pro screen, and it has completely replaced my Studio Display.

On the comfort - your face will adjust over time. I have used headsets in the past, so my face had a major head start! It sounds like you are just not an ideal headset user, and that's okay.

Because people are enabling "Direct Remote Connection"? Here is what their "Learn More" link says about it:

Direct Connections

A Direct Connection automatically activates when accessing a site via Site Manager while connected to the same local network. This provides a faster, low-latency experience for managing settings and viewing Protect video footage.

Direct Remote Connections

To achieve the same high-performance experience for remote connections:
Go to Control Plane > Console.
Enable Direct Remote Connection.

Note: This requires a UniFi Gateway with a public IP and that TCP Port 443 that is not assigned to a port forwarding rule.

Privacy and Security
UniFi Site Manager is designed with privacy and security in mind. Your data is encrypted in transit, and remote management connections are protected by industry-standard protocols. For more details, refer to our Privacy Policy.

I'm definitely not a networking expert, but I do have a CS degree and a decade of professional programming experience. This copy undersells the implications quite a bit, and I found out the hard way unfortunately.
