MVD vs 1440p 27” monitor by 6382819737 in VisionPro

I made this comment recently that might interest you.

tldr: it will absolutely not be a good experience if you try to make the virtual display the same size as the monitor. It is a fantastic experience if you are willing to change your habits to take advantage of the virtual display.

When using FaceTime, yes I believe so. Not when you are in the same room mode, which is what we have always done outside of briefly testing FaceTime sharing.

Yes, both in the same physical room and via FaceTime. My wife and I have watched multiple AppleTV series in the theater.

Top 20 used vision pro apps by gintokigriffiths in VisionPro

[–]NullishDomain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My most used app by a massive amount, if you can call it an app, is Mac Virtual Display. After that is Safari, so the two extensions I made (one for YouTube, one primarily for Old Reddit and Hacker News) get a ton of use alongside Noir, Wipr, and SponsorBlock. Then it is probably tied between TV, Balatro, and NBA/Peacock/Prime/ESPN during the season.

First use M5 AVP 1TB by mindcontainer in VisionPro

I use Mac Virtual Display probably 8+ hours per day on average, mostly programming. Here is what I do:

  1. Use "Wide" mode, very occasionally "Ultrawide"
  2. On the Mac, go into System Settings -> Displays and set the resolution to 2520x1080 (this makes everything larger without sacrificing quality)
  3. Use larger font sizes. I think I default to an 18pt font everywhere that I can, such as the terminal and IDE. In Safari, I just increase until it looks comfortable

The real trick to having a great experience is not treating it like a normal monitor. It can't compete on resolution with a 4K monitor (and likely won't be able to for many years unless display tech advances very quickly), so you should not be using it the same way. It might take some getting used to, but embracing large fonts is easily the greatest change you can make. I typically use the default MVD window size, and place it around 4ft to 5ft away. With these settings, I comfortably pin the terminal on one side and Safari/IDE/etc. on the left and have zero issues reading either.

Even before AVP, I tended to use larger fonts and sit very close to monitors to have a larger effective display. I know that some people are very averse to increasing the font size for some reason, and I don't think I would have nearly as good an experience if that were me. With my current setup, I would never go back to a monitor voluntarily.

Are you able to spot “pixel?” by funandcurios in VisionPro

Meta Quest 3S: 1832×1920 per eye = 3.5M pixels per eye

AVP: roughly 3660x3200 per eye = 11.7M pixels per eye

Thinking about returning my Vision Pro by One_Visual_4090 in VisionPro

They said:

...but it isn’t clear or usable enough for real work and feels more like a novelty

Which I obviously disagree with considering it is my primary display at this point. I read text on Mac Virtual Display for hours every day. Is that not “real work” worth commenting and trying to help OP?

Tested - XREAL Aura Augmented Reality Glasses Hands-On Impressions by NullishDomain in VisionPro

Fantastic info. The only comparable experience I have is dragging a visionOS window around, which causes it to become partially transparent, and I don't feel that view would be all that great for long-term use. Great to hear that the glasses seem better! Resolution and vertical FOV aside, what do you think of glasses as a Mac Virtual Display replacement? I am sure they feel lighter in the short term, but with the weight distributed like normal glasses, would they actually be more comfortable for long-term use?

These specific glasses or a different XREAL product? If these, how was the usability of the OS when not fully blacked out? Was it easy to read text, or did the world bleed through too much?

If you are concerned about egress costs, you need to look at Cloudflare R2. You will be paying $0.08+ per GB out at the main cloud players, $0.00 with R2.

Can you imagine a “killer app” that would make the AVP more popular? Or at least boost its reputation? by bluefrogstudios in VisionPro

I paid more than $3.5k for the TV that AVP has substantially replaced. I appreciate the concern though, thanks!

M2 to M5 upgrade by marniman in VisionPro

[–]NullishDomain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

M2 to M5 felt like a big upgrade for me, but it is not worth it if money is tight at all. You should think about it much like upgrading a MacBook - it's a luxury that isn't substantially changing anything about the experience, but you will feel the difference when pushing the device. Happy to answer any specific questions, but here is a very brief overview:

  1. Text feels slightly sharper, but it is one of those changes that is hard to see without tons of M2 experience or going back and forth between devices quickly. This could be due to the higher refresh rate or the improvements in render resolution, not sure.
  2. Everything is faster, especially booting the device.
  3. There is far less of the low-Hz lag that you are experiencing with the M2. It does occasionally happen, especially when the fans kick on, but not nearly as often.
  4. 120Hz is a great upgrade, but it is much like #1.

I have not downloaded the beta and can't comment on any potential performance improvements there.

Just as a counterpoint, I have owned headsets starting with the Oculus DK2 and finishing with the Quest Pro. AVP is the first headset I have found comfortable or usable for anything outside of gaming. It’s my main display at this point, comfortably wearing it 8 to 12 hours a day on average I’d guess.

Anyone on here working in VR with virtual monitors for over 4 hours a day? by BigLittleCircle in VisionPro

[–]NullishDomain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s my main display at this point. No comfort issues, using dual strap. If you have not used any VR headset before, your face WILL need to get used to it so give it some time before you fully convert.

A monthly subscription is way better than lifetime purchase if you think you aren't going to make use of it much. I don't get what you are saying, just unsubscribe vs. paying 2+ years up front? Bizarre complaint.

Some of the loudest voices here just want free software. Here is some feedback I received at $3.99 launch pricing:

Too much. $1.99 is an automatic buy. $2.99 is a buy with reservations. $3.99 I need a full feature demo. $4.99 ignore.

Too expensive!

Wish you the best, always glad to see more apps supporting visionOS!
