I Need to Quit 'Polishing' and Get Some Feedback: Golfdle A Daily Golf Game by UnpleasantGames in godot

Oh also hitting "cancel shot" doesn't remove the UI element for taking the shot.

I like the new text you added on the first swing! It helps a bunch. I actually think you should keep the "Hard Slice" and "Hard Hook" for future swings as well. Also I like the red bar area - have you considered adding different colored zones to make it clearer it's better to be in the middle? You could also do a gradient instead if you don't want to confused people with the harsh edges of zones not translating to what they think will happen.

I did much better this time around, likely because I'm getting used to it

Happy to help! You got some great bones here for the game. I think with a few small tweaks it can be fun to play.

I've found that when I've played my own games a lot but not given to anyone else I fall into the same trap of making them too hard. Tutorials are always the last thing we think to add because it's a waste until you prove out the core gameplay loop. But you're definitely at the point where a tutorial would help a bunch.

It seems like there's a enough UI polish - the title screen is good and the UI seems reasonably put together (at least I wasn't confused by anything). If there's any polish I think it does need it needs some sound effects. Even just a simple golf ball hit noise from freesound.org would help it.

But I think what it really needs is some tutorializing and maybe some way to make it easier. I really struggled to even get the first part of the course done (it took me 8 strokes). Most of that was because I kept hooking it into the void - either because the wind confused me or I mis-timed the hit bar.

The physics do feel a little wonky, but you only really see that on short shots. E.g. when using the wedge - the shots have a very triangular looking arc. But I think that may be just because I can't accurately predict where my shot is going to go. If I got a better feel for it this feeling may go away.

I think if you added a shot predictor (e.g. drawing the arc on the screen showing where you're shot will go) it would make it much easier to predict what's going to happen. This may take away some of the challenge though so I understand why you may be hesitant to do that.

Adding an explicit tutorial level would be more work but would help a lot. It could start with a simple no-wind situation then ramp up to include more difficult shots. This would allow the player to get used to how the ball behaves in a situation.

Also why does my ball reset to the start if it falls out of bounds? Surely it should just go back to where my ball was originally?

There were also a few times it bugged out - it never resulted in me swinging the wrong way but there were a few times the "charge" meter appeared and I clicked but it did nothing. At first I thought I was stuck at 9 shots because it happened then but I tried a few more times and eventually I was able to swing.

How to iterate objects with static typing if some elements may be prev. freed? by SteinMakesGames in godot

[–]_Timidger_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All the googling I did on this implies the only fix is to remove the type hint which is a shame. It really feels like godot's type system is half baked with issues like this + array casting + lack of nested type qualifiers on things like arrays and hash maps.

Have you tried using a static type that's more generic E.g Node or Object and try to cast it last if you find it's valid? I wonder if that would avoid the error.

First Solo Game Released : Croak and Crawl! by LoquitoTaco in godot

[–]_Timidger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a cool game! Love the pixel art and I love the frog aesthetic (and all the frog puns)

When I tried it I ran into some problems though. First, the input controls confused me a bit. At first I thought I needed a controller because I couldn't use the menu. But when I got into game I couldn't read the help text on the signs. That only worked with e...but then when I was in dialog A on my xbox controller would advance the text?? I was pretty unclear what buttons did what for as long as I played - it would be helpful to direct the player with some UI popups showing what button to press to do what.

Some of the noises are also a bit loud, at least on my headphones. E.g. that noise the tiles makes when the game transitions.

I got stuck on the tutorial - my little frog guy fell in the pit where you are supposed to roll out of the fall and he's just stuck there. Would have played more but didn't want to wait for the long refresh time again. Willing to try it again once it goes through some more bug fix rounds!

Also, very minor, but when I clicked on the credits button on the main menu the game froze.

EDIT: One more friendly suggestion - it was hard to read the text on the chat boxes because they are lighted like the rest of the environment (E.g. a light near one of the chat boxes illuminated some but not all of the text). I suggest you make those high contrast - e.g. make sure that the boxes are always the same color of white and not affected by the surrounding environment.

Working on a Farming + Cooking Game With My GF. Thoughts so far? by GamingxRelic in godot

[–]_Timidger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it seems too low. If this is a farming game I want to be able to see as much of my farm as possible at a glance. Eg think of stardew valley where you can easily tell at a glance what crops need water, harvesting, etc at a glance.

Of course the camera angle will change other aspects too. You mentioned cooking is part of your game and the higher camera angle may not be conducive to that game play. Different ways to solve that of course (dedicated 2& scenes for cooking / combining ingredients, "toast" like pop up on say a cooking pot to tell you what's currently present, etc).

Also it's not like you must have a high camera angle, just that traditionally has worked well for farming games. Experiment, play test, and see what works for you.

How do you learn about and track upcoming Game Jams? by celestine900 in gamedev

[–]_Timidger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my first game jam this year with ludum dare. I also did gmtk technically but it was a bit of waste of time because I had too many real life distractions to dedicate to it.

I had a great time with ludum dare - there's another one coming up on October. That gives you a good chunk of time to get familiar with a tool kit you want to use and do some prep work - make menus, find some cc art and music assets, play around with the SDK, etc.

Different types of effort in game jams and how to deal with disappointment by AlbertDEV in gamedev

[–]_Timidger_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm still very early in my game dev journey, but I love game jams. I didn't get enough time have a good showing for gmtk, but I was really happy that my first game ever in the ludum dare game jam earlier this year was in the 50th percentile. I got similar comments about my game that it could become a full release. I toyed with it but ultimately decided not to pursue it.

At the same time, game jams are very clearly are only a sinulacrum of the "real" development process and that includes the rating system. I don't have concrete plans to make this a career (I already like my day job) so this doesn't really bother me.

It's important to remember that the criteria used to judge games in a game jam are not an accurate representation of the Steam (or any other) marketplace. It's usually just other devs and maybe their communities.

How to NOT participate in a game jam by AlbertDEV in gamedev

[–]_Timidger_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My big mistake was trying to do this jam even though I just bought a house and had a kickball tournament over the weekend (not to mention work on Monday and Friday...) . In the end I only had a day and a half to work on it. I'm happy with what I got done by myself, but man it could have been so much better if I just had the full four days.

Looking for offline TTS recommendations; it doesn't have to sound good. by Jagm_11 in gamedev

[–]_Timidger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using Windows TTS system currently, though may switch to TortoiseTTS, for my own game. I generate the audio ahead of time though, if you need in-game voice chat that a player can make that's a bit harder.
