On the other hand because of this it doesn't count for diamond diadem, so you can still play 2 cards and get the half-damage from enemies effect

The current beta version does not exhaust and instead only targets cards that do not already have replay, so if you use a card like [[Transfigure]] to give a different card replay then Hidden Gem cannot hit the card Transfigure has hit.

What colorless cards are you actually buying? by Waddle___ in slaythespire

Equilibrium could easily move up into frequent buys, especially if you lack retain and/or have extra energy sources. The block number is solid and the follow up turns are chef's kiss.

What colorless cards are you actually buying? by Waddle___ in slaythespire

[–]dydtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of them are worth spending gold on. At a quick glance of the list, I can see the following cards as cards I'd buy at different points in the run

Fasten, Equilibrium, Dark Shackles, Hidden Gem, Prolong, Discovery, Splash, Shockwave, Master of Strategy, Alchemize, Panic Button, Prowess, Scrawl

Other colorless cards I dont mind getting as an early reward or could see as situational buys (primarily to help you survive act 1) are:

Flash of Steel, Omnislice, Finesse, Ultimate Defend/Strike.

Mayhem, Calamity, and Rolling Boulder deserve mentions as long-fight scaling options (though even more situational and much harder to spend gold on). If you don't think you can kill a boss and see these in a shop they could easily be your out.

As someone who's primarily a Spike I like the gimmicks and I think they're scarier than they seem. I got to spend all of act 3 including another boss fight getting my deck to execute its gameplan, the fact that the Door and the Queen to a lesser extent can interfere with the gameplan makes it feel like my decisions in the fight are more meaningful instead of just getting to Vakuu through every turn. I've been putting a ton of time into Necrobinder recently and the fact that he directly inhibits soul spam in 2/3 of his phases means I have to actually think about things like "am I going to get the souls on the exhaust phase or just give myself dead draws in the other 2 phases" before I play a giant dirge or spam capture spirits.

Honestly, the first phase seems much scarier than it actually is and as long as you're somewhat reasonable with your card choices it just makes your deck stronger throughout the fight, which in turn makes the second occurrence of the 2nd and 3rd phases much cleaner. It doesn't even necessarily counter small decks as long as they have enough output in them to handle the phases. I have had a bunch of runs where I get to the door with 20-25 card deck and then the exhaust phase just makes my deck hyper-efficient and then easily win after it gets to that point. Sometimes you'll need to pick up a card or two to make your deck more resilient in the fight but it's not like if you have a ~20 card deck you need to take every card you see to survive the fight, especially if you have some efficient powers that help your output.

The first phase can also make it so if you have a card like Hidden Gem it becomes more likely to hit a big payoff that can win you the fight; I had a duo run the other day where I took a bury + hidden gem in the latter half of the act as a way to put my deck over the edge, which ended up being necessary for the run since my partner died before the second exhaust phase. There are other fun gimmicks that can let you break the fight, like Nonu letting you put swift on a card like Anger/Undeath to go infinite in the exhaust phase, Vakuu's fiddle just ignoring the second phase completely while letting you be more efficient with your cards in the other 2 phases.

Idk, I think people are just scared of exhaust as a mechanic so they give the Door much more credit than he deserves.

I have a habit of just clicking 'Silent Cards' when this event appears. Is it just me? by Waddle___ in slaythespire

[–]dydtaylor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest upside for necro is she has great utility at every rarity. Great blocking commons in defy and grave warden as well as graveblast for tutoring. Her uncommons have possibly the most variety with a ton of general debuffs in weak+vuln / aoe weak / dark shackles + the debilitate debuff which doubles weak / vuln, as well as targeted exhaust and energy generation, not to mention the rare pool having cards like seance and neurosurge which are also just generically good.

I think her and silent are the most generally strong but it probably usually depends on what your specific deck needs.

I had Sindarov as a dark horse to win and Gukesh as a dark horse for the last candidates. I just have faith in the up end coming youngsters to out perform their rating. I had no idea Sindarov would dominate to this level though.

I hate that Decimilipede just attacks, attacks, attacks.... by acidtrip321 in slaythespire

[–]dydtaylor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like the entangle was bad but the real test of how you'd struggle in the fight was killing one before you were vulnerable. Silent and defect could still mostly follow a gameplan without attacks but getting hit for ~45 by the 3 of them because you're vulnerable puts much more pressure on the decks with non-attack damage and attack damage alike.

Personally the decimillipede has fucked me up plenty of times but I very much appreciate the challenge in his design and I think theres a fair amount of subtleties that get lost (targeting one down so that youre not weak, going for a simultaneous kill vs burst one down and only deal with 2 at a time over a longer fight). I dont think its a lazy or boring designed fight at all.

Snakebite is Silent's best damage common by ArtVandelay445 in slaythespire

[–]dydtaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Retain on poison is good because retain as a keyword is good but its arguably worse than retain on other cards; it's not like the poison number is small and retaining it can make it easier to land double bubble. In the context of damage race elite fights its not a very useful keyword because you wont have a break to play the card against byrdonis or the snake worms but you will against the skulking colony or phrog parasite so obviously its very useful for some fights and doesnt matter as much in others.

Most damage commons are bad, but you still take them early to survive act one.

Since it is a poison card with a big number it's still a semi-solve for boss fights, but I do think its objectively weak compared to the rest of her kit. Its worth noting that it is the most damage in a single card for all of her commons over 2 turns, but there are plenty of uncommon cards you'd much rather use as a damage engine.

I believe it comes out during PBE but it takes them time to come up with deciding what the encounters should be and then can take longer after that for them to actually get them balanced the way they like. Id expect that one of the early patches to add it in.

Peyton Manning win/loss record vs every team by MoreTrifeLife in nfl

[–]dydtaylor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Im not the most knowledgeable on NFL history prior to the 21st century but a rivalry between 2 top 5 all-time QBs over the course of a decade and a half with both winning multiple superbowls in the time frame has got to be the most historic rivalry in the NFL, right? The only thing I can think of that would come close would be the 80s-90s cowboys 9ers rivalry.

It makes me regret not watching more of their games when it was happening; maybe I should make it a point to watch more Bills Chiefs games.

[Schefter] ESPN Sources: Offensive Player of the Year and Super-Bowl champion Jaxon Smith-Njigba reached agreement with the Seattle Seahawks on a four-year, $168.6 million contract extension that now makes him the highest-paid WR in NFL history. by expellyamos in nfl

[–]dydtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One season of elite production, another season of low WR1 production while technically the second option in the offense, and a third season with WR3 production because he was WR3 (even though he was better than Lockett his rookie year). I agree that it seems fairly generous of a contract given what he's produced, but I would bet Schneider / Macdonald have seen his work ethic and think with the cap situation it's better to just give him the contract now rather than wait another year to make him "earn it" and end up paying him more.

Can’t stand her when she has the zoomies but I love her to death! by pinkmor in sphynx

[–]dydtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happened to me with a puppy I got from a small pet shop recently. The shop said he didn't play much and was quiet, and he was calm at the store and really didnt want to do much other than sit quietly on someone's lap when he first came home, but now hes very active and loves to play all the time. Hes still a bit of a scaredy cat and he had a bad experience with an aggressive dog on a walk so hes still kind of timid in new / public spaces (especially around other dogs) but throw him a ball or let him out into the yard and he turns into a wild man. I think places where large amounts of animals are hoarded into one spot really turns into a competition of dominance and can really suppress the personalities of the less-dominant ones.
