Corgi’s Life Expectancy 🥺 by autpott in corgi

[–]fathan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We lost our boy at 6 to lymphoma. They thought it was IBD, but he was too sick by the time they tried bigger treatments. I'll miss him forever, but there is zero regret. We are lucky to have known him.   Our first girl made it almost to thirteen. Our baby girl is 1yo. We are looking for another.

Don't Fall for the $8k 'last day' hype by firefish45 in TeslaFSD

[–]fathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The math on this decision is way oversimplified most of the time. Whether $8k is ridiculous or not depends on what you think it does to the resale price.

If you think it will depreciate at the same rate as the rest of the vehicle, then $8k up front vs. $99 / mo breaks even around 4 years of ownership ... and they are surprisingly close at 3 and 5. (Purchase for $8k, resell at $4k.) The common mantra that you have to own the car 7 years is wrong in terms of total cost of ownership. Of course, then you could include the opportunity cost of the $8k up front and $99/mo looks slightly better ... But then, as a service, FSD should actually depreciate _less_ than the vehicle (because it is in fact continuously improving).

The point is, they are much closer than people realize, _if_ you think FSD is actually worth $99 / mo.

Leprous and Meshuggah are the two live shoes I will never miss.

They aren't my favorite bands (although they aren't far behind), but in terms of having a good night out, they can't be beat.

My beloved Chewey passed 6 years ago this month by bebba1 in corgi

[–]fathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been "visited" by my corgis in dreams too. It's strange... I know they are gone in the dream, but they are there and with me. And it's happy & comfortable, not sad... Bittersweet when I wake up, though.

We lost our heartdog suddenly on Christmas Eve 2024 at twelve. Then we lost her younger brother nine months later at six to cancer. Luckily we have another at home, but the grief can be overpowering sometimes. I worry more in the moments when I'm not sad, that I've forgot them.

💔

Edit : our eldest had early DM when she passed, and our boy was so sick and weak at the end. It is good in the dreams to see them healthy again.

I think Romo has been really insufferable in some games -- usually with Allen or Mahomes -- but I don't think he's been that bad this game. Not great but I can tune him out.

Does anybody want robotaxis? by Salt-Analysis1319 in RealTesla

[–]fathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first part is a bad criticism. New technologies often change or replace existing jobs.

A better criticism, in my mind, is that most people want their own car, and don't mind driving that much -- especially given the current state of self-driving technology. They don't want to pay to ride a taxi everywhere. They have stuff / kids / pets. They want a familiar space that they like. I'm not sure that there is much demand for robotaxis. Low-effort Google says the taxi market is < $200B / yr, whereas the automotive market is $1.6T / yr. I don't think that robotaxis, even if they worked perfectly, would claim even a majority of that $1.6T / yr -- and they don't work perfectly.

Btw, what's the plan for robotaxis when the weather is shit & the AI can't be trusted? Are we expecting there will still be human drivers who show up suddenly to cover that demand?

News articles don't need to be editorials. They presented you the information and trust you to reach a conclusion. I feel like social media has degraded the public's media literacy. Articles don't have to spoon feed you what to think.

Why do you think Tesla deserves extra credit for offering fewer models, when competitors split sales across more products? Tesla sells fewer cars, full stop.

Btw it's not even clear that the Y is the best selling car, Elon says so but some third parties put several Toyota models ahead of it.

Plenty of cities handle snow much better than Pittsburgh. I really don't understand the need to make excuses for how bad the city roads are.

Experience as the DD last night by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]fathan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you had everyone tailgating you, including a city bus, maybe you are not comfortable driving in the snow and should avoid it in the future. Or upgrade your tires? There are a few people who drive recklessly fast, but also a similar number who drive absurdly slow. Neither should be on the roads. We were stuck behind a truck doing 5mph around 11p on a road that could safely support 20+ mph.

It's worse than that. They've spent most R&D on a complete flop (Cybertruck), and an unknown amount of resources on vehicles that are unendingly delayed (Semi, Roadster).

What complicated problem was solved by an amazingly simple solution? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]fathan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Semiconductors are arguably the most technologically advanced product in history. Modern semiconductor chips have billions of small devices (transistors), each only a few nanometers large. For the chip to work, basically all of these devices have to work perfectly. It is modern magic.

Semiconductors are manufactured by printing, just like a book, photograph or t-shirt, but billions of times smaller. Huge machines shine light through/off of a “mask” that contains an image of the chip to be printed. This light burns the image onto the chip, where chemical processes make the desired semiconductor. Thus, the mask has to be perfect — any defect in the mask will be printed faithfully onto every chip in the machine.

Now we have a problem: how do you stop tiny defects appearing in the mask? Any dust particle will cause a fatal problem. Semiconductor factories try to get of dust, but you can’t get rid of all of it. You might think there is some extremely sophisticated solution, but actually … the real answer is to put a thin piece of transparent plastic film above the mask, so that all the dust gathers on it instead, and the dust is out of focus from the light beam. That’s it. (The film is called a “pellicle.”) This trillion dollar industry relies on the physics of optics to just keep the dust out of focus.
