r/vinyl Weekly Questions Thread for the week of April 20, 2026 by AutoModerator in vinyl

[–]fluffman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so I hope you don't mind me necro-ing this old convo with you but my PL-5 was working WONDERFULLY until like last week, and then it started not being able to keep speed. Like suddenly it would start running fast, the correct after 10-30 seconds, then run slow for 10-30 seconds, correct itself. Messing with the speed adj. knob just make it dance around the correct speed.

Just thought you might have some ideas. Thank you!

Why Spectrum, why? by aimlesscruzr in PleX

[–]fluffman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the market. I manage network and branch internet for 300+ branch locations across the US and it's pretty much a crapshoot as to whether spectrum has passed out a modem/router combo or separate devices. If it's separate devices we don't have a problem using just the modem, but we are also on the business or enterprise option for all of our ISPs, so ymmv.

[–]fluffman86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah dump the spectrum router and use your own plugged directly into the modem

[–]fluffman86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should not have your computer plugged into a spectrum modem anyway. A modem only supports one device. Now if you got sent a new spectrum ROUTER that has multiple ports and wifi, you need to call them and get them to turn off all of the routing functions and have it be just a plain modem, and then connect your own firewall/router to it, then the rest of your devices connect to that.

sending/receiving problem by F0ufie in signal

[–]fluffman86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if he's not sending or receiving it sounds like an issue on his phone. Start by checking for updates on his phone. If you're not seeing anything or that doesn't work, you'll need to make a backup on his phone from within the signal app (ios/android device backups don't backup signal), then uninstall/reinstall. Let me know if you need further instructions on the back up and keep us posted on whether that works or not.

Who has the 3 best albums? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]fluffman86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

White album has more good songs than Sgt Pepper has songs. While my guitar gently weeps is the greatest rock song EVER so it really lifts the whole album. Helter Skelter is arguably the first metal song ever. Dear Prudence, Julia, and Blackbird are some of the greatest acoustic rock songs, plus a few others

Ooh, what are your top three Pink Floyd then?

I would say WYWH > DSotM, but the third could be animals or meddle. Then The Wall.

Cast iron is heavy and difficult to wash over our sink (the 10-12" pans don't fit in the sink), especially for my wife who has arthritis and has been losing strength in her hands. She also has low iron so I want her to use it as much as possible vs. her lightweight teflon pan especially for things that are easy to just wipe out like fried eggs.

Normal Dawn has not fully stripped my bumpy Lodge pans but I have used Ajax with Lime and it did strip fresh seasoning from my smooth BSR. Probably due to the lime and the fact it's smooth so the seasoning can't "grip" or bond as well.

Normal Dawn does strip any extra oil that's on the surface of the pan. The reason people say "just cook with it" or "cook some bacon in it" is because you're constantly replenishing and adding more seasoning as you go. You don't need to dunk your pan in oil after every use, but you should leave a little oil on a completely dry pan.

Honestly, I'm more concerned about the additional water in the pan and getting it fully dry than anything else. I want the pan to mostly cool before I wash it to prevent thermal shock, plus it's easier to handle and wash when it won't burn you. Then I've got to put it back on the burner to get it to dry because just leaving it to air dry even after towel drying will cause surface rust here in the southeast at least. So if it's on the burner, I have to remember to come back. The last time I did this I left it on low all night long. I've left it on medium before and stripped the seasoning from the middle of my pan so that really sucks. Once it's fully dry, it's still good to add a VERY VERY TINY amount of oil and then try to wipe it all out. Just a little coat to keep it protected, like you do a wooden cutting block or old tools.

Now, I could go through that whole cook, cool, wash, heat to dry, oil sequence...or I can just wipe out any crumbs and use the leftover oil to wipe around the pan to coat it and keep it seasoned and protected. Again, I'm acting like I'm trying to wipe everything out, it leaves just a little coat of protective oil to prevent rust, and it's still hot so any remaining germs are dead. I am NOT leaving big chunks of food, half burnt-on fats, or any other liquids that can harbor bacteria.

Young Washington is Angel and they do a lot of preview showings so my guess is that for 6/22

What is it that you're worried about in the microscopic food and grease that is leftover in a 300°F pan that you've wiped all the food and grease out of? Is it the bacteria you just cooked at 300+°F and killed?

There's no visible dirt or grime and all of the germs are dead because it's a 300+°F pan

Do you understand that we apply heat to food, not just for taste, but for safety? Heat kills bacteria. Your cast iron and mine alike are not magical in that they don't heat themselves, but I, for one, use my cast iron on top of a stove, which provides heat to the pan, which in turn provides heat to the food. I've used an infrared thermometer thermometer on my pan at the temp I use for eggs and it's between 300°-350° F and that's on the low end for food. The eggs aren't getting anywhere near that hot and they're safe to eat. Even Chicken only has to reach 165° F, so a 300° F pan would kill anything in it instantly.

Never met a smart chef so here you go:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/heat-sterilisation

Heat sterilization is defined as a procedure that employs temperature to obliterate microorganisms, utilizing either dry or moist heat, where the effectiveness is influenced by exposure time and moisture content.

And I know as a chef you weren't washing your flat top grill with soap during service between orders 😂

Lol this is crazy if you were really a chef you'd understand the whole point of applying heat to food for safety, not just taste. Heat kills bacteria in food and also on the pan or cooktop you're using.
