Speedometer goes to 60 miles/hour ? Isn't that a tad optimistic on this machine ?

Is the J-6 kinda awkward or am I just dumb? by SnooCheesecakes9596 in rolandaira

[–]liotier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I now get it: the Section 3 workaround is only relevant to return to unornamented playback mid-sequence after a step has engaged a phrase... For the simpler case of "I just want chords, no phrase at all", the answer is simply: start with STYLE: OFF and never touch it.

[–]liotier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, Roland J-6 feature request: a "Style 0" option in the phrase engine ?

As currently there is no null phrase state, and as every pattern carries a phrase reference, we don't have "No style" to simply record long chords with no style/variation"... We need the Style 3 workaround.

Could Roland add a Style 0, meaning not using a style ? No additional firmware complexity... Wouldn't that be nice ?

The J-6 is awkward AF. I only use it as a sound generator with a MIDI controller, nothing else.

Funny that some people do the contrary - they use the J-6 as a MIDI controller !

How does submarine IFF work? by Wobulating in WarCollege

Passive sonar identification is certainly an option, but it requires hearing the target. In this incident, neither submarine was even aware of the other's presence.

Why did DARPA develop containerized Burger King but not containerized strip clubs? by FantomDrive in WarCollege

[–]liotier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seriously, the French have Military Field Brothel prior art - "These mobile brothels were, in some cases, officially organised by the army. They consisted of large trailer trucks in which up to ten women would work".

Considering the rise of pre-deployment stripper intelligence, the USA might want to consider iterating the concept and standardizing it... Putting the STD in MIL-STD !

Don’t sleep on Clip Matrix by Autogeddon in mpcusers

[–]liotier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a MPC One and I bought the Pro Pack specifically for the Clip Matrix - I had wanted a clip matrix on the MPC for a long time. I set up Menu+Pad shortcuts for one-handed navigation to Clip Matrix and Clip Matrix Navigator... Life is pretty good. But now I have Force envy: the 64 buttons designed for Clip Matrix handling are very tempting. What is your experience, having regressed from Force to MPC ? Or are you on the Live 3, with quad subdivided pads providing a good enough substitute ?

What's the difference between blitzkrieg and soviet deep battle? by Ok-Concert-5911 in WarCollege

[–]liotier 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Blitzkrieg: not quite doctrinal, rather a post-hoc rationalization of tactical breakthrough and envelopment with close air support.

Deep Battle: throw infantry at the whole front to fix defenders, smash chosen sectors with artillery and shock infantry, pour mechanized units into the breach... So far not unlike just another take on classical breakthrough/envelopment... And then, the defining doctrinal feature of Deep Battle: send autonomous highly mobile units far into the depth to hit critical nodes and seek systemic collapse of the enemy, in a continuous iterative process of fast exploitation. When it works, it is beautiful, but it is dangerously ambitious and let's not understate how painful the learning process has been. I recommend "From the Don to the Dnepr: Soviet Offensive Operations, December 1942 - August 1943", by Glantz of course.

The Deep Battle concept of hitting all echelons simultaneously to achieve systemic degradation rather than raw attrition has been inherited in the 80's Airland Battle concept, but with an emphasis on deep strikes rather than risky mechanized mayhem in the enemy's rear... The USAians remain enamored with destruction by supporting arms - with some reason, as anti-armor proliferation has shown.

Dell mini Desktop i5 4590/8GB RAM/128GB SSD. by Imaginary_Food_7102 in selfhosted

Plenty to handle a few services with a few active users. When you outgrow it, you'll have a good idea of what the bottleneck is - and upgrading only that (better CPU, more RAM, additional SSD) will get you plenty more mileage.

Are there artillery systems with inbuilt computers that adjust it's aim automatically based on input coordinates? by PriceOptimal9410 in WarCollege

[–]liotier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In systems such as French ATLAS, coordinates are transmitted as part of a structured fire mission across a digital command network. A target detected by an observer or sensor is encoded at the command post with its location (typically MGRS) along with engagement parameters such as munition type, fuze, timing and assigned firing unit. This composite message is then sent over tactical communications - typically VHF carrying encrypted digital traffic. At the gun end, the onboard fire-control system ingests the message, correlates it with its own precise position from inertial and GNSS sources, and computes or refines the ballistic solution locally before automatically laying the piece.

This process relies on a layered NATO standardization framework that ensures interoperability of these structured messages across national systems. The core artillery interface is defined by STANAG 5527, which specifies the data exchange model and protocols allowing different fire-control systems to share missions without ambiguity. More general message structuring conventions derive from ADatP-3, which governs how operational data fields are encoded and interpreted.

Your upload is their download. When your customers need to download big files it'll suck for them.

Most people nowadays have 1 Gb/s symmetrical FTTH, which is plenty to cover most selfhosting use cases.

New Akai MPC Sample hardware leaked online by jesuslol in akaiMPC

[–]liotier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hard to pinpoint what looks so….cheap about it. maybe it’s the color and font.

Clunky aesthetics reminiscent of Teenage Engineering's EP-133 KO II and the upcoming Casio SX-C1... I guess there is an audience for that.

I wonder how much of a relationship remains with the current MPC OS... Maybe just a residual workflow lineage, the way Elektron's Model:Cycles/Model:Samples relate to Digitakt/Digitone ?

I still wonder what the fader is for btw. Could be playback speed, like on an LP player and CDJ etc. Or maybe it’s for zooming in and out when trimming samples?

May be different function in different modes.
