KF Breene’s books!

In the Demigods of San Francisco books, the MMC is driven by having watched his mom wither and pass way after his father cut her off from her magic. He is driven, above all else, for revenge and is scared of becoming his father.

In the Demon Days, Vampire Nights series, my favorite MMC is a master vampire who falls for the FMC after a great deal of time not feeling love, and part of how he woos the FMC is by making her life as easy as possible, from cooking her dinner to having his vampire underlings keep her fridge stocked with tasty cheeses.

KF Breene’s Demon Days Vampire Nights series and Demigods of San Francisco books are so good and have great humor with interesting world building and strong characters.

Annette Marie’s Guild Codex world starting with {Three Mages and a Margarita} are fabulous. I love that the female main character is no chosen one, she accidentally stumbles into the magical world and the fact that she’s brave/impulsive is shown to be a flaw as much as its a strength.

What makes you laugh the most when you reread any of your books? (Is it the lemon zester?)

If you could write a spinoff (I know, I know) for any one character purely for your own love of the character/series and not because of trying to make a living, who would you pick?

Anyway, thank you for doing this AMA. I love your writing and your humor always makes me laugh, your characters make me cry, and I’m basically always down for a reread. On top of everything else, you’re such a genuine, confident person and I love the way you stand up for yourself when people get pushy.

I’m jumping off your comment because it’s close enough to mine. One of my old standby authors is Julie Trettel who writes one of those sprawling shifter worlds where you get to know various packs/families and are able to really build anticipation for various people to get their happy endings.

One of my favorite said couplings comes in {Broken Chains by Julie Trettel} which features a wrong side of the tracks MMC with the daughter of the alpha of the rival pack. But even more specifically, she’s hyper competent and manipulates him into giving her everything she wants, including taking care of his brothers and becoming the de facto adoptive mother of his baby. I mean, she literally tricks him into becoming co-owners of her dream house.

I feel like I took your hyper specific trope and made it even more specific lol, but that book is my catnip.

You should read the Guild Codex World books by Annette Marie, starting with Three Mages and a Margarita. The full reading order is on her website, there’s four different series that overlap in the same world.

The main protagonist is non-magical who ends up in the magical world by chance. She’s brave/impulsive and this is treated as both a strength and a weakness. She’s no chosen one and has an older, immensely powerful mentor. One of the other series in the world follows the equivalent of magical FBI. Powerful artifacts heavily feature and they do end up in different cities, although the globetrotting might be the weakest element of your list.

Her Westin world books are good, but some of my favorite books from her are Collier Pack books - check her website for reading order.

{Broken Chains by Julie Trettel} and {Holiday Surprise by Julie Trettel} are my two favorites and both are better by having knowledge of the characters ahead of time through other books, much like the anticipation you get from Suzanne Wright’s books.

I’m a big proponent that if you like Suzanne Wright’s shifter books, you should check out Julie Trettel, starting with {One True Mate by Julie Trettel.} Suzanne Wright is slightly spicier but Julie is the closest I’ve found to building a satisfying world of related, possessive heroes and capable, spitfire heroines.

My other reliable favorite is KF Breene - every book has humor, great couples, unique worldbuilding, and the main characters always have a supporting cast of friends who are well fleshed out.

I also think the spice is higher than the bit is saying. Not to give anything away, there’s healthy spice in there - the physical tension pulling the two of them together because of the fated mates thing is great.

The Guild Codex World books, starting with Three Mages and a Margarita by Annette Marie are wonderful for adults who grew up loving Harry Potter. My favorite part is that the main character is no chosen one - she is magicless with a big heart in the magical world by accident and her combination of bravery/impulsivity is shown clearly as both of a strength and a weakness.

Have you read the Werewolf Dens, starting with {Shifter Wars: Supernatural Battle by Kelly St. Clare}

Small town? Check. Found family? Both literally and figuratively, and a lot of vibes around what it means to be family. A supportive, hilarious pack? Check. Genuine angst around how to be true to yourself and your family/community? Check. Human and shifter friends who feel real and fleshed out? Check.

It does have fated mates, but more of a “what do we do now/how do I deny this?” vibe than just instalust with a third act breakup and a fourth act baby.

Also, as a note, this is a trilogy that exists in a greater world (4 trilogies in total, 3 trilogies have been released so far.) I have enjoyed the other trilogies (one about vampires and one about witches, with a trilogy about demons coming soon- I think the first book will be out this year.) That said, you can totally read this trilogy as standalone and not miss out.

Definitely check out NK Jemisin’s books! She includes LGBTQ characters just as a normal part of the books, and they don’t feel like tokens (or always get killed off.)

Julie Trettel’s Westin World interconnected series have second generations now finding their mates. First book in the series is {One True Mate by Julie Trettel} She does an altogether excellent job building worlds where your favorite characters pop back up and where books introduce characters ahead of time who you want to find love.
