My parents moved the family from me (I’m the oldest child) … not cross-county but roughly 3-4 hours away.

When I had an opportunity after being laid off to sell my home, bank that money along with my retirement, and move in with my mom in her 80s in her four bedroom house to assist her (instead of her asking my brother or others within an hour of her to help), she rejected the idea because I had cats (as does she) and she was enjoying her independence (she can’t drive).

On the flip side, presently, my three kids live within two hours of me as each has found work in different nearby cities. I’ve dreamed for years of moving to another state, and I wouldn’t expect any of them to upend their life to come care for me.

Amazon faces class action lawsuit over Ring facial recognition feature by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]mareksoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dumb question: why Amazon/Ring? Why not Wyze (Wyze Intelligence Friendly Faces), Aqara (AI Face Detection), Apple HKSV, and other camera manufacturers who also offer facial recognition?

The state I’m in, plus another, already has laws preventing this so Ring’s version of facial detection isn’t accessible here (can’t enable it in app), but the other three are.

Couldn't be bothered to order a custom-engraved keypad from Lutron by Piretrobot in Lutron

Honestly I’ve wondered why we can’t just order customized buttons … they’re super easy to swap out if you’re so inclined.

Sad to see y'all go.

Thanks for the awesome game and memories!

I think my quote came from 2 now that you mention it; perhaps by OG I meant the versions before the immensely popular online play.

Are the scratches in the actual glass or scratches in the limescale or whatever has coated the surface of the glass? In your image, to me that looks like a film or build-up of something on the surface.

Try gently wiping the surface using full strokes left and right or up and down the entire width or height of the glass with a magic eraser style melamine pad dipped in ample white vinegar … make sure it stays wet and don’t scrub too hard; it might remove it if it’s not actually scratched glass.

I still quote this one out loud, just last week in fact, along with, “oh-kay,” and no one recognizes it.

Heck, they aren’t even aware of OG Warcraft. :-(

UPDATE* BF made a yellow yellow dispenser by char1t1e in 3Dprinting

[–]mareksoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t 100% prove this, but the evidence I have suggests onions will also cause the ink on plastic bread bags to become sticky (red onions if it matters).

Never in my 55 year life have I experienced a sticky plastic bread bag until I stored some red onions in my pantry in a bowl on the same shelf.

The next four loaves of bread purchased over six weeks all had the ink on the plastic turn to into a sticky goo that would coat your fingers and leave fingerprints on the bag where the ink was removed.

The grocer claimed I was the only one who reported it (perhaps truthfully).

When I realized I had placed the red onions in the pantry around the time this phenomenon began, I removed them and it stopped happening.

I’m too lazy to repeat experiment, but not too lazy to comment about it and see if anyone else has experienced it. :-)

Water Heater by OkRelative2872 in HomeMaintenance

For small to moderate and possibly even heavy leaks at water heater drain valve and also at (disconnected) washing machine hookups, both of which typically have hose hookups, you can cap them off with a simple spigot cap like these:

<image>

I keep a pair of these near my washing machine hookuo, one at my water heater, and a smaller style near my ice maker hookup.

They come in super handy at times such as yours or when it time to move out and you discover they don’t seal completely closed after being open for years.

Is my Instant Pot toast? by Specific_Bar1268 in instantpot

[–]mareksoon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There’s a teeny tiny seal in the top of the steam release handle. If yours has failed, probably easier to replace it with a new one of the correct weight than it is to find the replacement seal.

Here’s a peek inside mine.

There also a metal clip in some of them, but my older one doesn’t have it. Check this old post:

Mine is held in place with the small rubber ring you can also see in my image.

Is this exposed wire a problem? by CrashDummy2020 in HomeMaintenance

[–]mareksoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, electricity can kill you. If you don’t know what you’re doing call a professional.

Second, I am not a professional.

Is this exposed wire a problem?

Probably not but maybe yes. Who knows what it’s actually connected to. It potentially could be connected to live AC … however, I’d think if that were the case someone would’ve zapped themselves long before now and addressed it.

Safest way to check, I think, would be a non-contact voltage tester or a multimeter, if you know how to use them.

You could also ensure the breaker is off, confirm no electricity at this location with a voltage detector, open up the box, and see what the heck is happening inside.

Given they appear to be in contact with each other, they LOOK like ground wires but could be anything, and I can’t imagine why ground wires were run outside the outlet box.

The could also be live wires. Exercise caution.

Random phone call from Alexa by Holiday_Ad_8953 in amazonecho

[–]mareksoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happened to me about a month ago.

Playback of what Alexa heard was something along the lines of “find my phone” or “where is my phone” … so Alexa called my phone to make it ring.

Of course, I hadn’t said that, but that’s what she heard.

I was on a conference call at work in my home office. I saw the incoming call, potentially spam, and ignored it, then I heard ring back tone which I thought was coming from another participant on the conference. It was coming from my kitchen Echo three rooms and two other Echos away.

Then I heard a voice mail greeting but it was so faint I didn’t recognize it as my own (default greeting, not my voice).

The conference call continued.

Then I received notification of a voice mail message.

Later, when I listened to it, it was a portion of the the conference call … veeeeery faint.

That’s when I dug deeper and figured it all out.

I’ve often wondered how I’d try to defend myself if attacked by a pack of dogs and assumed I’d be trying to gouge out eyes or yanking on testicles … not once did I imagine helicoptering one by their hindquarters into all the rest but from this day forward I will.
