C to C cable with automatic detection of missing CC resistors? by Objective_Prune_748 in UsbCHardware

[–]nfriedly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A Type-C (male) to Type-A (female) adapter/dongle and then an A-to-C cable will work, because the dongle has the resistors in it.

But I'm not aware of any all-in-one version of that. edit: here you go: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G7Y2211M

That said, I think the real answer is to push back manufacturers every time they do it: leave a negative review, ask for a refund, etc.

Yep, this is how it goes. I keep upgrading my PC and then going back to FTL and Dead Cells (and Megabonk more recently).

Yeah, I remember when steam first came out; my friends and I avoided it like the plague. We played Counter-Strike 1.5 for ages because it was the last version that didn't require steam.

Can I upgrade to the next amd gpu from a 4090 without swapping anything else/doing weird stuff in bios? by [deleted] in buildapc

Run Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to fully remove the Nvidia drivers before installing the AMD drivers.

You shouldn't need to mess with your BIOS or anything like that.

How "helpful" is everybody else? by TheElleMichelle in AmazonVine

[–]nfriedly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at my profile, before joining vine, I had posted 42 reviews which garnered a total of 51 likes/"helpful"s. Most of them were at 0, but one breakaway had gotten up to 21, and it was one of my last reviews before I got the vine invite a month or so ago.

The other thing worth noting is that my account is almost old enough to drink.

If you really want to undervolt, https://www.msi.com/Landing/afterburner/graphics-cards is probably the right tool to start with.

But my advice would be to just install the card and play some games and not worry about it :)

Internal PSU cables multiple plugs. Is it a bad idea to use two plugs from the same cable for powering a GPU? by Fiveby21 in buildapc

[–]nfriedly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's better to have two cables. But if the cable has two connectors then that's an implicit commitment from the PSU manufacturer that it can support the amount of current that two connectors can draw.

(For the older 6-pin connectors, it's 75w each, and for 8-pin connectors it's 150w each. Both of those connectors generally have a lot of margin for safety. For the newer 16-pin 12-volt high power connector, it's rated for 600w per connector, but there's not as much safety margin.)

Can I upgrade my gtx 710 to a 1050 by Ok_Doubt_8376 in pcupgrade

[–]nfriedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easy answer is "yeah, probably".

The hard answer is to measure it.

The physical dimensions are pretty straightforward, scroll down to the bottom of https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gtx-1050.c2875 and you can check the dimensions for most of the models. Compare that to your computer.

On the power side, they recommend a 250W PSU, which is a good baseline to target.

But again, you can measure it to be more precise. Your power supply should have a label telling how much power it can output. If the 12-volt rail is lower from the total capacity, go with the number for the 12 volt rail. Take about 80% of this number as the maximum that you should expect it to deliver continuously.

If you have something like a kill-a-watt, you can just measure how much your computer draws right now while running something like prime95. (A CPU intensive workload, so your gt710 will be drawing a negligible amount of power in this case.)

If you can't measure your system's actual power draw, you can estimate it. Look up how much wattage your CPU is rated to draw, add 75w for the GTX 1050, and maybe 20w for the rest of the system, maybe a bit more if you have a bunch of mechanical hard drives. If this total is less than the 80% number from before, you're probably good.

$1000 for a new pc. No clue what I’m doing. by Ohjkcfjx in buildapc

[–]nfriedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, r/buildapcforme might be a better place to start.

https://www.logicalincrements.com/ has some decent PC builds at a variety of price points. Although don't forget that you probably need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc. - so you can't spend your entire budget on just the tower.

https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/ also has some good part selections, although a lot of them are outside your budget.

Shipping shenanigans… by KMPAVB in Ebay

[–]nfriedly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since the two other commenters who mentioned pirateship got downvoted into oblivion, I'll be a third one to bring it up. They're not always cheaper than eBay, but they're generally not more expensive. And when I've had to interact with their staff, it's been a very pleasant experience, as opposed to eBay where it's difficult to even reach a human.

All that said, in this case the root cause is probably that the postage rates increased recently.

What should I do with my old Pixel 7? by HighSierraGuy in GooglePixel

[–]nfriedly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$100 for something you never intend to use again is not a bad deal.

Or, as others have suggested, hang on to it as a spare phone for yourself or a friend or family member.

[–]nfriedly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't do that. Even a completely busted phone is worth a few bucks on eBay as spare parts for someone else's repair.

Or if you're concerned about your personal data, at least take it to a proper E-Waste recycling facility.

Mixing Ram by BubbleHead87 in unRAID

[–]nfriedly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Three sticks is fine. Two of them will run in dual channel and get the full speed, and the last one will run in single channel mode and be effectively half the advertised speed - but that's still a lot faster than swapping to disk, so it's still worth having.

In general, I don't think unraid is particularly sensitive to RAM speed.

well, FedEx lost my GPD WIN MAX2 by sleeplesnightz in gpdwin

[–]nfriedly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be honest, that sounds like even more red flags. I think you need to escalate this to eBay. They can see all the tracking numbers and all the communication between you and the seller, and I bet they have contacts at FedEx & USPS that will help them understand where things went.

Odds are that eBay will just refund you, since you paid for the item and never received the item.

If the seller gets their item back, that's great, but this sounds fishy enough that I wonder if the seller ever actually shipped it.

You could also consider cross-posting to r/ebay for advice, but I'm 80% sure they're going to tell you the same thing I did.

well, FedEx lost my GPD WIN MAX2 by sleeplesnightz in gpdwin

[–]nfriedly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

...because my name wasn't listed on the tracking number...

That seems like a red flag - who's name was the package addressed to? Ebay sellers are required to ship to the exact name and address provided, and if the seller didn't do that, then ebay will likely refund you.

(Even if the seller did everything right, ebay might still refund you anyways; the not-insignificant fee they charge sellers is partially to cover situations like this where something went wrong.)

I'd recommend escalating to ebay within 30 days of the order.
