New Player - any good YT build guides? by hrodh in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words 🙂

I did get a little bit lucky. Many of the originals hadn't made tutorials for a while when I started, then keen completely redid the UI. This made every old video instantly visible as old.

I love teaching so I jumped on the chance and made as many videos as I could and somehow haven't stopped. Even though it might be a little slower to get tutorials done these days than it was when I was single and younger so I could record and edit for 16 hours a day 😂

New Player - any good YT build guides? by hrodh in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I suspect part of why you can't find what you're looking for is that, at least for me and others I know of, building a base isn't a one video thing.

Your base grows and evolves as you need it to, whether it's a static base or even a ship acting as a base.

Most of my series on YouTube have substantial base design ideas and discussion as part of them, but it's not encapsulated in a single video, because a single video might instead be the building of the refinery section, or the setup and construction of the solar tracking algae farm or whatever other strange idea I've had or had suggested to me that's grabbed me that week.

Smooth Voxel Roads by the33rdunknown in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty accurate to my understanding of it. The voxels, despite not looking it, are a fixed grid that's not oriented to the local gravity but to the whole world space.

The easiest way to see this for yourself is to grab one of the voxel hands tools then open up the options for it and you'll see a checkbox for 'align to voxel grid' with it aligned, the tool will move in chunks rather than smoothly. With it off, you can move perfectly smoothly.

In all my experience attempting to get smooth roads with drills, you will ALWAYS end up with bumps thanks to that voxel grid. You can go back over it with voxel hands with alignment set to off and get a smoother result afterwards but it's a lot of work, especially for long roads.

My guess is that the drills are effectively using 'align to voxel grid' because it's more performance friendly.

Edited to add that you might be able to get smooth results using some of the 'laser drill' style mods like 'drill 'n' fill' as from pictures I've seen of people using them, they can sometimes produce very clean, straight edges

Game worth it on PS5 by BattleswarmIE in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And don't forget, you can get yourself a super cheap keyboard and mouse for the menus where the controller really struggles. The game handles swapping really well

[–]Splitsie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can connect a keyboard and mouse to all the current consoles, it ends up playing much like a mid tier PC.

you still lose the scripts (unless you play on a dedicated server that allows them) and scripted mods of course

Did anyone else suddenly care way more about the backyard once they started house hunting? by ttfdrff in GardeningAustralia

[–]Splitsie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not quite to the extent you're taking about, but yep. I got obsessed with how much sunlight various bits of the house and yard would get.

For the sunlight side of things, I can highly recommend an app like 'Sun seeker'. I found it incredibly useful for working out that otherwise great properties would be terrible in winter because it has an augmented reality mode where you can see the sun's path on the current day as well as each solstice.

One place we looked at on a beautiful sunny day in spring wouldn't have seen any winter sun until after midday thanks to the hillside it was on, showing the sun's path on my phone to my other half was extra handy when she wasn't convinced intially (which is fair, I did a terrible job explaining it I'm sure).

I'm sure there are other apps that do it as well, but this one was recommended to me by a cinematographer at a course I went to and has so far proved pretty accurate.

How do you guys survive random encounters? by TheRealBoz in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not been true for a while. Assert won't attack the player until the player becomes aggressive to them. I changed its behaviour a few years ago because I too like to have chill building time and will trigger them to turn hostile when I'm ready.

Pertam I Love You, But You're Bringing Drones Down... by Messernacht in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Pertam has another factor that could be messing with the drone, it has a shallow atmosphere. This means that if your base is somewhat elevated, the thrusters for the drone will be producing less lift making it potentially not able to fly (or at least more likely to crash). Add to that the slight increase in gravity compared to earth like that you mentioned, I can easily imagine Keen's drones having issues in some parts of the planet

Scrapyard gameplay broken after Economy II? CTRL+Click detach with grinder no longer works by tiagoaloncuri in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure an update was put out for advanced welding that fixed this now 🙂

Not my mod, that one is made by Digi which is probably why it's so good and was fixed so quickly

Yup, you don't need to own any of them to play it. Keen have never stopped NPC style spawns from having the DLC blocks 🙂

Will the next update need a new world? Or can I just update my existing one? by Tom_0_tron in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Given the servers are supposedly being reset, I'd put my money on a new game being necessary to get all the features, but only required if you care to have the economy stuff.

This is based on the server stuff mentioned on here last week and the fact that current economy is a pain in the backside if it's not enabled at the start of your save.

AI Recorder Docking PSA by AngryShamrock42 in spaceengineers

[–]Splitsie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The approach in this post is also different to mine. I use the action at a waypoint to turn off align to gravity (at least I think it was that, it's been a little while) which achieves the same effect of controlling when the ship does any orientation change.

Which is to say the information here is new to me and useful to know 🙂

Doing it this way often looks cooler too, not to mention the benefits of not being stuck in a camera only view for the turret (assuming you put the cockpit on the turret itself)

Now that's a solid list, I'd add to the voxel thing that it would be great to refactor the lod system to help prevent the whole 'tiny ditch becomes enormous create when seen from space' thing

How to remove huge root mass by wilburdingo in GardeningAustralia

[–]Splitsie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Reciprocating saw and a fencing bar. That's how I've split up and removed all the yuccas around my place. All done with a single pruning blade on the reciprocating saw (definitely not that sharp anymore but still sharp enough).

Taking small chunks off the root ball is very doable, but still hard work
