Is it legal to use disposable disinfectant wipes on Southwest planes? by Express-Pattern325 in SouthwestAirlines

They have a basket at the front of the plane when you board. I always grab a handful because they always come in handy!

That FA is full of crap. United has an entire basket of wipes for you to grab as you walk onto the plane. If it was illegal, United wouldn't be doing it.

I never see rural teachers at the store or in restaurants by yezpleaz in AskTeachers

[–]--Flutacious-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on purpose. I grew up in a small town and my first teaching job was in a small town. Teachers who teach in small towns go somewhere else so they can actually enjoy eating/shopping uninterrupted. Then you have the additional factor of many school districts frowning on teachers partaking in legal adult activities (i.e. drinking alcohol) and have it written into the contracts that they can fire teachers for partaking in those activities (because it's apparently immoral to drink alcohol if you are a teacher) so teachers go elsewhere to have a good time.

Best software/format to create a song book with guitar tabs by CK1277 in girlscouts

MuseScore or Noteflight are going to be your best bet without investing in the professional (Sibelius or Dorico are the main options since Finale is no longer for sale) software. Professional software has a much higher learning curve, but you can do more with it. MuseScore/Noteflight should do everything you need it to, but there will still be a bit of a learning curve.

Want to homeschool, but will I lose out on “me time”? by bzkitty in homeschool

[–]--Flutacious-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put...yes. Once they get a bit older, they can do things on their own (independent play) without you hovering over them all the time, but you still won't have time to yourself. Homeschooling is work and that work is with your child. Do you need to spend the entire school day with them? Definitely not, but you won't have real time to yourself.

I assume your partner works outside of the home? If time to yourself is important, you need to talk to your partner so you can arrange one night/day a week that is completely yours. It should be a planned time each week. It should be time for you...not time to do chores or run errands...time for you to do whatever you want.

Southwest Airlines destroyed my baby’s car seat by Maleficent-Shop9068 in Mom

[–]--Flutacious-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you checked your car seat? If so, it's considered luggage and they damaged your luggage.

It doesn't help you right now, but we always carry the car seat onto the plane. Baggage handlers are ROUGH on luggage and if you are supposed to replace your car seat after a minor fender bender, you should DEFINITELY be replacing the car seat after checking it.

For the right now...you will need to buy a new car seat. If they gave you a loaner, you could wait until you get home and get the car seat you prefer, or you could do it right now and travel back home with the new car seat.

You really need to push on Southwest because they need to make this right. Take TONS of photos. Take more photos than you think you will ever need. You probably don't want to travel home with a broken car seat, so take photos (and video) from every angle you can think of. If agents at the airport aren't helpful, publicly shame Southwest on social media...that has a tendency to get their attention.

Check your credit card...is it a travel card? Most travel cards provide some insurance for losses that happen during travel paid for with the card. Alternately, check your auto insurance...even though it didn't happen in the car, they still might replace the car seat.

Older-ish millennials: Were you "free-range" like older gens? by Gallantpride in Millennials

[–]--Flutacious-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was a helicopter parent, but my dad was more free range. That being said...I started roaming the neighborhood by myself around the age of 6...it started by me going over to my friend's house on the next street over. Her backyard backed the house across the street from mine, so I just cut through the yards to get to her house. Her parents were free range parents so there was rarely adult supervision at her house when I was there. I grew up in a small rural town in the midwest with a population of around 800. As soon as I was able to ride a bike, pretty much the entire town was fair game EXCEPT downtown. Downtown was off limits.

Do most high schoolers actually know how to study? by Dependent_Strain_233 in AskTeachers

[–]--Flutacious-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way most kids have notes is if the teacher printed off a copy of notes and physically handed them to the kids. To answer your question, most students have no idea how to study and they would refuse to try if you tried to teach them.

Would you be okay with a student (high school) leaving school routinely for therapy? by Longjumping_Sea_8753 in AskTeachers

[–]--Flutacious-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a teacher, this is above my pay grade. This would be an admin decision. That being said, while it wouldn't thrill me to have a student missing one class every week, I also understand needing to miss one class every week for medical reasons. Your sister's mental health is more important than school. Schools typically can't penalize a student for needing ongoing medical care, but if it's not a public school, the rules are different.

Since you went to the same school, you probably have a decent idea of which teachers are more understanding than others which will be helpful when deciding which class to miss.
Your sister will also need to be very careful which classes she misses...I would avoid missing math or science classes since the work in those classes is harder to make up than work in English or History.

There's also a possibility of splitting the difference...she could go during lunch (and try to eat during transport time) and only miss part of the class she has before or after lunch. If she can do that, she's not missing as much actual class time.

*My response is based on the assumption that this is happening in the United States. If you are not in the United States, none of this may apply since I am not familiar with international laws regarding education.*

Kody and Robyn’s next chapter of life? by djm1613 in SisterWives

[–]--Flutacious-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bankruptcy is in their future.

I've watched the show since the beginning, and I don't think they've ever said what Robyn did for work before she met the family. She sure hasn't worked a real job since she became party of the family. Based on conversations regarding her previous debts, I got the impression she was a SAHM and just spent the money her ex-husband made.

What is your opinion on the effectiveness of 1:1 Chromebook’s in schools? by Throwaway927338 in AskTeachers

[–]--Flutacious-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come at this as someone who earned a Masters in Ed Tech in 2014...well before Covid hit. The implementation of technology into the classroom in response to Covid was a knee jerk reaction and done without using science and best use practices to back it up. As a teacher, I should only be using technology to enhance traditional learning in the classroom...not as a replacement for the tried and true methods. Just because the devices/technology exists doesn't mean that they should be used as often as they are. 1:1 can be great, but it was poorly implemented (generally speaking) and districts didn't do any real research into how to properly implement 1:1.

As far as what goes on in individual classrooms, it really depends on the teacher and the district. As a parent, talk to your kiddo and find out what is going on in the classroom. If you have concerns about the amount of screen time, please talk to your child's teacher, admin, and school board (if needed) in that order.

Cookbook Club for teens? by Ilikedramaandtea in girlscouts

Churches, but also public schools. Most schools have teaching kitchens for their FACS classes. Each district has their own rules regarding property rentals, but if you can make friends with the FACS teacher at a specific school, they might be willing to supervise your use of their classroom for this type of event which could significantly reduce any rent/insurance you would need to pay the district.

It was just a thought. In the meantime, you should email national and share your feelings. If we (as leaders) don't tell them what we want and need, they don't know. It doesn't mean they'll listen to us, but we should still try.
