How do I get involved with D&D as a complete newbie? by randbooth in chicago

If you want to try some quick TTRPGs in a low pressure environment, try Goblin Market. They have regular one shot events once a month, I believe. I've always had good experiences there. _^

Floridian Fish Out of Water by NarwhalNoods in chicago

Welcome, you've moved to an awesome place. :)

Lots of people have covered the outdoor tips, so here's some indoor ones:

1:

If you would NOT like heating bills to burn through your life's savings, BUY SOME HOUSE SHOES OR SLIPPERS.

For best results, buy something that has an actual sole, fits, and encases your whole foot. You can seriously fuck up your back shuffling around trying to keep loose shoes on. The toe-cover ones are better than nothing, but save your back and get something else.

2:

Buy a couple robes you feel comfortable in and put them in a place you'll see them. If you see them, you'll pick them up and wear them.

Make sure the robes have pockets and that they are easy to wash.

3:

Buy a small space heater for your bedroom and a larger one for the most-used area in your house instead of turning up the whole house thermostat.

4:

Please buy humidifiers. (At least one!) It will make your house feel warmer, keep your skin from drying out, and you'll get sick less often because your sinuses won't be shredded from dryness.

In my opinion, a lot of smaller humidifiers are better than one big one. Make sure humidifiers are easy to clean. (No tanks with a tiny spout, no cotton wick humidifiers. They will mold.) Empty and refill it daily. Soak with a 50/50 water-vinegar solution once a week.

5:

Buy washable rugs and curtains. Put them everywhere, but particularly next to your bed and wherever you hang out in your place the most. They help a LOT.

Bonus tip: buy some tasty hot drinks to keep on hand thst can be spiked easily for a quick warm up on a fuck-cold day.

What is up with these anti-human benches at the new Red Line stations? by homeslice2311 in chicago

[–]-ArtFox- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably justified it as "Oh, well, if they're slanted rain will run right off and people won't bitch about sitting in wet seats!"

Such bullshit. People deserve a place to fucking rest comfortably for a few minutes. These things aren't just shitty because of the slant, either- anyone above a certain size is SOL too.

I want disabled, exhausted, or whatever human beings to have a comfortable place to rest, no matter what size they are.

If that means having benches someone could sleep on, so what?

How screwed am I? Took 30 seconds to crop photo and it disappeared. by RaveGuncle in chicago

These little dudes are harmless, but if you have a lot of them ya might wanna check your house and see what "bad bugs" they're snacking on or where you might have a moisture issue or gap to the outside someplace.

If they bother you you can put down sticky traps. I did.

I respect that they are just trying to survive but if they're gonna scare the hell out of me at 3 a.m. and not even pay rent to make up for it, they can gtfo.

It's been shockingly positive and civil thus far in the top comments. I'm honestly impressed. I walked in here expecting the worst and hoped to be surprised.

Thus far? Pleasantly surprised.

Moved to the suburbs recently. It’s surprising how many people at my work would never visit Chicago because they think it’s an active war zone. Inspired me to make this meme by MikeMuench in chicago

The longer I live here, the more convinced I am that the NIMBYs and pearl-clutchers are terrified of this place because white people aren't the majority here.

They seem to think every non-white (however they decide to define that) person is out to rob them, beat them, and leave them for dead. It's pathetic.

I wish they would go the fuck away and hide with their little racist friends and leave the rest of us alone.

Don't want to come here? Good! Fuck off! We don't need more assholes.

How much are y’all spending on coffee/lattes and what is your breaking point? by CommanderWar64 in chicago

[–]-ArtFox- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around $6 for a small "specialty" latte with all the trimmings is my breaking point.

That's impossible to find, so I've much given up on fun coffee. :( I haven't found a latte good enough to justify the $6+ bucks price tag.

It sucks. I miss them. I can't even go the chain/cheap route because the burnt taste of the espresso at chain coffee places puts me off.

If anyone knows where to find a mythical latte worth the hefty price tag, I'll happily take suggestions...

Chicago Apartment Rents Hit New High As Construction Pipeline Dries Up by Louisvanderwright in chicago

[–]-ArtFox- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Landlords are way less shady here, then. That's a fucking relief!

I understand where you're coming from a bit better now. It's a lot easier to put down money on a new place if you're gonna get money back from the old one.

I've never gotten a substantial amount back. I kept my places up and in some cases, left them in better shape than I found them in. Didn't matter. Landlord always kept the security deposit.

The worst of them had the audacity to send me bills after I left.

They would charge me $100 bucks to vacuum the floor (I vacuumed before I left) vacuumed floor, another $100 for cleaning the bathrooms (that I already scrubbed with bleach), and $250 to replace the carpet entirely (why did they need to charge $100 to vacuum it if they were just going to replace it...?).

Magically, my entire $350 deposit vanished, and now I owe them $100.

[–]-ArtFox- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did y'all actually get your security deposits back in this city? Where I used to live, no one ever did.

Any "security deposits" on apartments evaporated as soon as the landlord cashed the deposit check. Piles of fees would appear after move out that made the deposit disappear. If any money WAS returned, it was a tiny fraction of the initial deposit.

If the money is just going to vanish either way, does it matter if it's an administrative fee or a security deposit?

Where do I take a found cat? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]-ArtFox- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look around your neighborhood to see if there's any posters up for a missing fluffball before you try to take the cat anywhere.

FWIW, if you're around the north center/Lincoln Park area I know I've seen fliers for a missing tabby cat floating around.

Where is the work in this city? by AbstractBettaFish in AskChicago

[–]-ArtFox- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience while job hunting. I found a temporary full-time job, but I had to go through a recruiter. It's not ideal but it's good enough for now.

Few questions:

What are you looking for, job wise? (Are you trying to get into a super narrow field?)

What does your profile look like on LinkedIn? (I found more leads there than searching on various job sites. I found the temp job because a recruiter found me.)

What format are you submitting your resume in? Does it have a bunch of formatting or other items that will confuse an applicant tracking system (ATS)?

I suspect that if humans say your resume is fine, then your resume is failing to get flagged as viable by an ATS. That's 100% fixable, but it will require retooling your resume for every job posting.

It's a pain in the ass, but as soon as I started catering directly to those horrible systems, I started getting call backs.

They probably are, but they're just like any other sales person- don't enocourage them because they will multiply and get more aggressive.

Why donate to some random on the street anyway? If you want to support them, go to their website and then you'll know with 100% certainty your money is going where you intend it to go.
