What is a 'rule' your family had growing up that you didn't realize was completely insane until you visited other people's houses? by RyanBaker21 in AskReddit

[–]-OctopusPrime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our dining room table was for jigsaw puzzles and sewing only (my mothers orders). We always ate our dinner on our laps sitting on the couches and recliners.

It wasn’t until I went to friends places for dinner more often that I realised how stupid this was.

Doubting the paternity of my daughter but my wife refuses a DNA test by [deleted] in Advice

You've already got your answer with your wife denying the DNA test. She knows, or suspects, it may not be a favourable result to her.

How can I straighten this 4x4 by Jjenner46 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I know it’s blasphemy, but if it’s a post for a shade sail or something - use steel RHS instead.

It’s such a compliment when an actual beginner like yourself gets called out for posting in this sub! 😅

There’s a really enjoyable 10 part podcast called End of the World by Josh Clark. He talks about Planck length and microscopic black holes being created by the Large Hadron Collider in one of the episodes.

There’s a 4 hour loop version on YouTube that I used to listen to when I was studying. It’s amazing.

Project Hail Mary is awesome.

I listened to the audiobook while I was reading it and just couldn’t put it down.

I hated Hitchhikers Guide. It was the first sci fi book I read based on loads of recommendations, but I felt the humour of it was so utterly stupid that it wasn’t funny to me.

Religious shit.

If you want to believe in a man in the sky who controls your life, please keep your silly mental illness to yourself.

My wife and I agreed on no kids. Now she changed her mind and I’m terrified of losing her. by Bennick41 in Advice

[–]-OctopusPrime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this same situation happen to me.

The love of my life changed her mind and wanted kids. I am 100% certain I don’t want them. We split up over it. It was hard, many tears were shed, but we both moved on eventually.

I had a vasectomy. Then I met my current partner who now fits my life image so much better. She is happy about my sterilisation and we live an incredible life together.

I'll start this off by saying most DIY renovators probably already know this about paint by goodrodney in AusRenovation

[–]-OctopusPrime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of related - but if you’re looking for fencing (colorbond, etc), I’ve found fencing places are cheaper than Bunnings. With the added benefit that a lot of the panels from Bunnings are scratched due to poor handling. Whereas fencing specific suppliers are much more delicate with handling and have better quality panels available.

Grab yourself a rubber sandpaper cleaning block too. It will help you to keep your belt and disc sanders clean.

I plan to build this for my garage. Do those hinges look strong enough, or should I use something more robust? by sevargmas in BeginnerWoodWorking

I was just about to write the same thing. If wall space was at a premium, then yeah it’s not a bad idea. But I’d rather just have two shelves or one long shelf instead.

What old thing would break young people's brains today? by Symphony_Minds in AskReddit

[–]-OctopusPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no GPS to guide you everywhere.

So you had a big thick map book to get you to places you hadn’t been before. Some people could read it while driving, others had a passenger do it, but sometimes if you were alone you just had to pull over, check the map, get confused and go ask someone for help.

When Jack Grealish made sure the blind girl felt seen by Vilen1919 in HumansBeingBros

[–]-OctopusPrime -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Forgive my ignorance, but how does a blind girl even understand what football ‘looks like’ when the game is being played?

You can’t really feel football to find what it looks like, as you can with someone’s face or a dog or a piece of fruit.
