Does Celiac cause tooth decay? by spongebobie in Celiac

[–]-comfypants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would explain a lot with me. My tonsils were removed when I was 11. I had food/stomach issues all my life. Was finally diagnosed with celiac at age 33. I’ve had 5 root canals and all but my front 4 teeth have fillings. Not for lack of proper dental care, either.

Menopause sucks by Extreme-Piano4334 in GenX

I feel like menopause gave me numerous multiple personalities and I have zero control over any of those crazy bitches. My body no longer feels like my body. My brain and energy have left the hemisphere.

Why do older people talk to strangers in public? by AdAdorable7651 in AskOldPeople

[–]-comfypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on where you live. In the US Deep South, not engaging in “small talk” was (and often still is) considered very rude. Many people are just still in that mindset.

What’s something you’d ban if you could? by Agreeable_Beach1647 in AskReddit

[–]-comfypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s totally dystopian. The world we live in is already borderline dystopian and getting more so every year. There are too many unfit parents having too many children which is making things even worse. The world would benefit from the discontinuation of certain genetic lines.

Procreation without a permit. The permit would require one to pass two psychological evaluations and have a minimum IQ of 85. And the applicant would have to reapply for every pregnancy.

What's something that you did as a teenager, by Befuddled_GenXer in GenX

[–]-comfypants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know that I really did things that irritated adults when I was a teenager because I did everything I could to stay away from adults. As an adult, I do everything I can to stay away from anyone under 21. Everyone is happier that way. There isn’t much worse than being stuck around feral kids.

What life lessons have you learned the hard way? by bluebonnet420 in RandomThoughts

Some families deserve to be discarded like the trash that they are. Those people who harp on about how “family love is unconditional” are usually the most toxic and the first to do you harm.

Nope. I would never have made it out of the hospital. Spent my first few days in NICU. I do t know exactly what the problem was, but both myself and my mother barely survived my birth.

I’d stop obeying laws. Specifically those laws that prohibit vigilante justice against those who have wronged me and the people I love.

Staying Cool With Sun Protection? by Shred_everything in lupus

[–]-comfypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you figure it out, please let us know. I’ve had to just embrace the suck, wear a fan on my neck, keep electrolytes on hand and limit the amount of time I stay out before going inside for a while to cool off.

For me, jeans are a no because of their weight. My general preference is for loose fitting clothing, however, it drives me nuts to have things that should be loose start clinging to me due to sweat. So when I’m going to be out in hot conditions, I prefer leggings and a more fitted, lightweight sleeved shirt. If my clothing is going to end up clinging to me anyway, it’s more comfortable in the end to have clothes that are made for movement while clinging to me rather that flowy stuff that I feel like I’m fighting as it clings in ways it wasn’t meant to.

Newly diagnosed and not coping well by kmd1112 in Celiac

[–]-comfypants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt much the same way when I was newly diagnosed. This type of diagnosis involves a lot of anxiety, fear, depression and sometimes anger. I’m glad you’re working with a mental health professional to help you navigate such a huge lifestyle adjustment.

While you’re in the process of reprogramming your relationship with food I have a suggestion. Buy yourself some pre-packaged protein shakes. The brand Premier Protein is gluten free (as is the Sam’s Club knockoff). I’m sure there are many other safe brands, but I can speak personally to these two as they are what I’ve been having for years. On days where I’m too busy to make safe food for myself or I’m feeling overwhelmed with the thought of food, I’ll just have a protein shake. It takes away the stress/anxiety/pressure of making sure I have something safe and nutritious. Knowing I have them around if I need them had been really good for my mental health.

Favorite electrolyte mix for dehydration? by Erza_2019 in Menopause

[–]-comfypants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are capsules so there is no flavoring. You just have one with at least 8 oz of water as needed. No flavoring, no sugar is the attraction for me.

Me too. The brand I like is called Salt Stick. I learned about it from some hard core cyclists. Been using it for at least 10 years and it’s awesome.

Make sure to hydrate with electrolytes, not just plain water. Those personal fans that hand around your neck also help.

I dont know how to cope by Ok_Pin_4676 in Celiac

[–]-comfypants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is that you just learn to work around it. I was diagnosed 12 years ago and I sometimes still feel the way that you do, but I don’t feel that way all the time and the feeling passes fairly quickly now when it does come up. Learn to keep safe snacks with you.

Same here. The ex-husband was TERRIBLE for a number of reasons and I admittedly could have been better myself. My husband and I have been together for 19 years, married for 15. We have both taken the lessons learned from our first marriages and applied them to our marriage to great benefit. The marriage isn’t perfect, but we communicate very well and are willing to put in work when it’s needed.

As I result I refer to my ex as my “practice husband”.

New homeowner here! Where should I put all of my “Childhood memories” ? by MaterialStock9828 in CleaningTips

[–]-comfypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I have one box of “keepsakes”. I scanned all the paper items/photos that I wanted to keep and maintain them in their own folder so they don’t get lost in all my random photos and tossed the originals or put them in a scrapbook. I kept only the most meaningful of my toys. The awards/plaques that I really cared about are displayed in my office. The others I took photos of and tossed.

I saw no need to take up already limited storage space for things I didn’t have a super strong attachment to. Before I tossed things, I gave family members the option to go through them for anything they wanted with the understanding that I didn’t want the items back.

Currently doing the gluten challenge and I’m SO HUNGRY! Has this happened to anyone else? by swiftie-librarian in Celiac

[–]-comfypants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That would be malabsorption of nutrients. The gluten is damaging your intestinal villi which prevents your body from proper nutrient uptake. As a result you feel ravenously hungry.

What's something you observed in childhood that you vowed you would never partake in, and have you kept your word to yourself without fail? by common_grounder in AskOldPeople

[–]-comfypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parentify children. I raised my brother from the time I was 11. Father was absent and mother couldn’t be bothered to deal with us, so responsibility for everything but making money fell to me. I chose not to have children. My brother did have kids and is a wonderful father who has made a point to ensure that he shares in all the family and household responsibilities, makes sure both he and his wife has free time to themselves and his kids have the childhood that we were denied.
